Music that nobody knows about

here‘s a cover of a song by a band you may not have heard of from a band you prolly have heard of. no intention of burdening y’all, but my mom‘s battling cancer right now, and it’s made me recount good times and connections with her- hence, remembering the song. i never really liked the bee gees growing up, but my mom loved them and had them playing all the time. this jangly, garagey re-interpretation was much more palatable to young me, and gave me a different look into the bee gees. these days, i'm still not a beegees fan, but i sing along with my mom to the hits.

check out dara puspita's other stuff too! they were an all girl band from indonesia starting out at a time when rock music was banned in the country.

i went to a bookstore in los angeles during my trip that ended being the start of lockdown. i stumbled upon this record in the record section and was very fond of the cover, so i bought it. i looked up information about it and could only find the discogs page and some people who owned it on bandcamp, so it's truly just one of those pieces of work without any information behind it

back when I bought records I made a habit of buying one unknown mysterious record from the “experimental” or punk or whatever rack. Some stuff was great, some stuff was terrible but I think it's a good habit to just give something unknown your whole open mind, really give it a fair shake you know

Ska Time? Ska Time.

I‘ve actually listened to all these before! I’m lucky to be friends with the guys that run Bemanistyle/Otaquest, when we first met I was like “yeah the ska songs in Pop'n Music are my favorite” and they showed me who all the artists were.

did I already post this banger?

@compositehiggs hey I know of frenesi! yay!

@milo dude, king gizzard is so popular here I was just walking down the street and heard some zoomers talking about them, ty, fuzz, and psych porn crumps really loudly. I do really love them too !

@AlecS wow, my dad is a roger dean / Yes / jon andersen dad, and so am I. I even bought a cib copy of Black Onyx for famicom because of the Dean.

@saddleblasters reminds me of Polysics…

Did y‘all know Hip Tanaka was in a reggae band in the 70’s?

He has started producing albums recently, and has been performing his original tunes for about half a decade.

with all that said, if I‘m going to use this platform to promote any artist right now it would be Mike Love (not beach boys)

Music with a message. He also appeared on Tim Heidecker’s Office Hours podcast recently, haha.

Did you know Susumu Hirasawa (Paranoia Agent, etc) formed a Progressive Rock band in the 70's?

Did you know OMODAKA is Soichi Terada, Ape Escape composer?

Last post for now (sorry?)

Eriko Imura, composer on Wagyan Land, Klonoa 1&2, and others, produced an album in High School while participating in Light Music Club. Oh my lord it is one of my favorite obscure video-game-adjacent works of art. Bump it. It's somewhat psychedelic, very much a prelude to her work on Klonoa.

Haha where is "here" so I can move there! Psych is coming back baby and I love it!!

I really love The Wild Ones which I‘d describe as an all-girl punk band that plays surf rock with a doo-wop influence. They only put out a couple records on indie labels and broke up in relative obscurity but they’re SO GOOD. 110% my jam.

Another ultra-obscure band I love is [Little Tin Frog](https://littletinfrog.bandcamp.com/album/the-pain-and-pleasure-machine). IMO The Pain and Pleasure Machine in particular is a masterpiece of angry music that doesn't sound like other angry music I'm familiar with. They also have some silly songs in their body of work and it's worth noting that their drummer, Logan Whitehurst, had some solo hits back in the days of MP3.com and also made fantastic music. Anyone who likes goofy novelty songs really owes it to themselves to listen to his album [Goodbye My 4-track](https://needlejuice.bandcamp.com/album/goodbye-my-4-track)

@Nemoide#14488 R.I.P. Logan Whitehurst, I was following him when he was tragically lost due to brain cancer. He made music right until the end, man.

Seeing all this obscure music makes me remember all the times I've felt some inscrutable process complete itself uncomfortably inside of me to the final end of some object of art only to have that mind baby go essentially unnoticed by any other human. I guess that is the condition of almost all art everywhere throughout history but somehow that seems difficult to imagine.

Just finished going through this whole thread! A bunch of awesome suggestions, thanks all. I have made a big list to work through! I am not sure how much “obscure” music I am into, but I really love an artist called Nym who mostly makes relaxing downtempo music. They don‘t seem to have a ton of views/exposure anywhere. I went through a phase of putting on music like this and playing Tetris for hours, after I played against someone really good round a friend’s house and wanted to improve.

Just started going through this tonight —There's some really great stuff. Saving a bunch to listen to while working tomorrow.

Here are two I've been a big fan of this past year. One even has a really great animated music video.

@seasons#14210 Wow! A friend turned me onto this album in college. I love this song — this version in particular.

Thank you for reminding me of this. I'm really sorry to hear about your mom. I hope you and your family are okay.

i almost never hear the band pageninetynine talked about. i‘ve only listened to this song by them but it’s unbelievably raw and emotional. they had three guitar players, two vocalists and two bass players. this is from 2001

@safety_man#15249 WHAT THE HECK YOU KNOW LAVINA YELB??

I‘ve been following that guy from deviantart since 2005, had I remembered I woulda posted it here.

I’ve collaborated with them!

They are probably my favorite artist, ever

That‘s amazing! It’s nice to find someone else who knows their work — I thought I was crazy since they make such great stuff, but generally seem slept on.

I love this video you shared. The sequence with the tiger is so good.

This is more in the “music some people know about” realm but if you haven‘t checked out The Numero Group I highly recommend their stuff. They re-release a lot of out of print Soul and R&B records, and a good mix of other stuff as well. I’ve been listening to this on repeat lately, which they reissued last year.
