@“MDS-02”#p67218 I'm listening to Like I Used To tonight and really enjoying it.
I love this chunky synth, I think it's a fake panpipe or something? Anyway it rules and I like this goofy song. https://youtu.be/6UGapxejQW8
New KNOWER album out now. This track deserves speakers. Enjoy the ride.

the best new release i've listened to this year is easily the nourished by time album. particularly this song, which might be my most listened to song of the year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_wUnw6gkSQ
on the heavier side of things, this lamp of murmurr album will probably take the crown:

@“MoH”#p129970 particularly this song
I watched this video because you posted it and...yeah, I was blown away by it. I was vibing with it so hard. I love stuff like this where the artist sounds half like they don't give a crap about anything at all and half like they're knocking at the door to reality. What a vibe the whole video has, really cool. Reminds me of Jodeci? And Dam-Funk? And just a ton of cool music I love. Instant classic for me.
Recently, I've been having fun digging into lesser-known '90s emo bands that have long since broken up but are now getting pockets of attention on YouTube and elsewhere. Such a cool genre: you sometimes get weird, mathy, angular riffs and stuff that almost borders on post-rock, sometimes you get some heavier sounds that really lean into the hardcore side, and sometimes you get a certain sensitivity / vulnerability that doesn't always show itself in punk or heavy music. Sometimes you get combinations of these traits or all three.
I've been digging up a lot of bands in this vein, but I'm especially enjoying two female-fronted bands from the time, Endive and Everyone Asked About You.

@“rearnakedwindow”#p130083 so glad you like it! there‘s something about the line "look at what the future’s been rejecting" that really gets to me. the whole album is just as good.
i grew up in detroit, and his sound really reminds me of summer nights on belle isle, when everyone would park their cars by the water with drinks and food and music. so yeah, that vague "90's r&b" sound.
in my senior year of high school (when i first started using the internet to discover music), i remember getting into "real emo" like pg.99, i hate myself, the kodan armada....
i think you described it very well. i still listen to some metalcore from that era like undying, disemobdied, etc.
Any Sufjan fans here? He had a really good new album come out on the heels of announcing a debilitating illness requirng him to relearn how to walk and another announcement that the album was dedicated to his recently-deceased partner (which is one of the more-gutting ways someone can come out after several decades in the public eye). Man, I'm just so bummed for him

@“exodus”#p71716 That designation belongs to R.E.M.
I haven't thought about Seikima-II in at least seven years, and then today out of the blue I get Bad Again playing in my head.

@“deepspacefine”#p137055 on the… bright side this is his best work in over a decade in my opinion. I think Javelin is outstanding and his best since Age of Adz.
@“KingTubb”#p137065 Javelin is outstanding and is definitely the best thing he put out in a long time. Age of Adz is a classic, but my hot take is that All Delighted People was slightly better.
I really liked the fun side project he did with Angelo de Augustine writing songs about b-movies (we like those, right?). Not as impactful or meaningful as his main stuff, but it's nice sometimes to not be sad?
Update: there is one good billionaire
(seriously though, this is a fascinating read)

This isn't a problem unique to music criticism but like… I need critics to start being HATERS again. Bring back haters!!!
No one these days wants to get thousands of death threats from teenagers for like a week??? Like, grow up!!! Write your lil pan and get your death threats!!! The stans are too emboldened
@“Hunter”#p138209 I’m unironically a huge swift fan but 1989 Taylor’s Version is absolutely not a 10/10.
Robert Christgau is such a good critic in part because he knows how to be a hater. Sometimes I’ll read his hater review of an album I loved and agree with him. His review of _Thick as a Brick_ is perhaps my favorite piece of art criticism: “ The usual shit--rock (getting heavier), folk (getting feyer), classical (getting schlockier), flute (getting better because it has no choice), words. C-”
So I was aware of Akina Nakamori, she‘s super famous and all. But I was not aware of this new wave ethereal album where she sounds like her vocals were recorded at the church down the street from everyone else. It unequivocally rules. This is gonna be a “video unavailable” but if you’re a weirdo I highly recommend this album. As far as singers that start out as idols, this is one of the furthest strayings I‘ve heard from the path (which she returns to later in her career of course!). If you wanna hear goth fretless bass and violins in your experimental idol music here’s the place to do it.
