love those records but don’t feel like they have a “greatest ever” panache

Are we defining rock as anything that’s traditionally guitar/bass/drums influenced, with all subgenres of rock as part of it? So far it’s been quite indie rock for me.

Not the “greatest ever” and maybe not “rock” — but definitely always comes to mind when I think British + 2000s.

I loved that first Arctic Monkeys album back when it first came out, fell off after the follow up though. I always thought the video for View from the Afternoon was really cool.

@MoH I love Dry Cleaning but I’d never seen that video before. This rules

idk how strict to be. I’d say that Burial for example is obviously not in the conversation (not due to lack of quality ofc). But I think that good Pet Shop Boys album from a while back counts I guess

maybe Black Metal

I’ve always though of Pet Shop Boys as pop music, especially from their 80s and 90s period. That said, the line between pop music and rock music is beyond blurred now.

Back to Black by Amy Winehouse? I’ll say the music isn’t traditional rock but the spirit and heart is

how does it stack up against Salt Marie Celeste? it’s tricky

Oooh yeah it’s this one. I would also submit Peasant by Richard Dawson

yeah good pick and I admire it but tbh need a english person to explain it to me I think

Not sure you can, it’s apples and radiators. Either could be either in that one.

maybe @Bbtone solved it

stereolab and muslimgauze dont quite make it to the 2000s

I don’t think it’s that one, but I can see the appeal. I’ve not heard it before, but while I’m not a fan so far, I will try to give it a listen properly over the weekend.

I can try, but so far it’s quite Northern based and being from the south there’s bits I may not get. I may not to ask an even more English person for a translation.

I used to not be into it myself—this is the song that changed my mind:

I think it’s gorgeous. One of my favorite recordings, period

But my favorites ARE the best

I know I’m not picking my favourites, because in the last 23 years my favourite albums, like myself have changed a lot.

Thst and a lot of music has come out. If the question was asked 10 years ago it’s a very different way to get to the answer.

let me get this band out of my system before jumping into Dry Cleaning which looks promising

The Fall has an elden ring-sized discography, should i trust this list?

I think you’re ok to start with Live at the Witch Trials and then go in order. Everything in the 80s is good with the exception of Room To Live which isn’t too great. Lots of good stuff in the 90s too but not as consistent. This is the period when the band had it’s most infamous member turnover (people getting fired from The Fall is a whole thing) . Still lots of good stuff in the 2000s but somewhat less consistent than that.

As for the list you linked: too hard on Dragnet but otherwise reasonable. Hex Enduction Hour is probably the best with warning there are some nasty slurs I do not endorse ofc. Grotesque, Perverted By Language, The Wonderful And Frightening World, and This Nation’s Saving Grace are all great I think everyone agrees. I like The Infotainment Scam a lot too and a bunch of the early 90s tracks when they were working house and techno into their sound.

Now that I think of it, you might want to start with the Slates EP; that’s what made me “get it”

This is a great resource as you go
