I finished this game last night and took an indecent number of screenshots along the way. I must dump them here…for my money it has the best graphics and the most jank translation imaginable. There are so many delicious lines. I disagree with recent disparaging comments made on the podcast.
Obviously there are spoilers but everything is out of context, so maybe not too dangerous. If you have already played it, _Relive...the magic_
maybe people don‘t like the mechanics. i haven’t played enough other tactics games to compare. i will not accept any criticism of the graphics, writing or music though. each received a 10 from game informer
@“yeso”#p49763 The IC podcast is honestly the only place where I’ve seen casual FFT hate as a regular thing. Everywhere else it’s either outright beloved or treated as some overlooked hidden gem.
Like okay it’s a bit janky as a tactics game but what PSX RPG doesn’t have jank as a major part of its appeal?? The package is aesthetically perfect and playing with numbers and loadouts is fun, and if you want tighter balancing and math there’s a whole modding community for that. I don’t need all my tactics games to be Shozo Kaga exercises in rigid number manipulation and masochism. Messing around and experimenting on these gorgeous battlefields within this medium-best narrative is fun!! And yes the _Advance_ games are good and _Into the Breach_ is good, and people should try the game _Gungnir_ which is also good!
@“2501”#p49769 the message I get from the podcast is that there are better/other good tactics type games out there, and the disdain with FFT is more that it takes up a lot of oxygen in this particular sub sub genre

@“2501”#p49769 jank as a major part of its appeal
yeah part of the reason FFT remains fun is that after you beat it you can do all sorts of weird stuff for entertainment
@“yeso”#p49774 ofc, but like, having played other good games in the genre, I would still reasonably call it my favorite - not because it has the most perfect math, but because it ties it all into the most perfect package of mechanics, gamefeel, narrative and aesthetics. By all means wish TRPGs were a more popular genre with more options to choose from but like, I think FFT is pretty deserving of being considered the GOAT beyond just being most Westerners’ intro to the genre.
i played around with them a lot as i was going through the game! i only use the ones that come stock in openemu. the one i settled on is called “CRT Royale Kurozumi”
on my display when i scroll down through the screenshots here the colors seem to shimmer/flicker...cool
@“Syzygy”#p49784 TRPGs have been a huge, broad genre since 8-bit days and continue to be
Should we have a thread about TRPGs?
I just received and interesting recommendation from a friend in [_Tenderfoot Tactics._](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1061610/Tenderfoot_Tactics/) I have to admit that I kind of hate the visual style, but the premise is quite interesting.
@“Syzygy”#p49790 the official English PSX script into the SFC ROM
this is where I'm at nowadays. The PSP vers was my entrypoint and it's great too! I just like the vibes of playing a marginally bumpier game on the tv....
