@“Gaagaagiins”#p49792 Should we have a thread about TRPGs?

I would be all for it. At the moment I've been finding the genre to be pretty refreshing and relaxing, for whatever reason. I'll save my small recommendations for a presumed thread someone who isn't me will start!

has anyone played the banner saga? haven‘t seen much of it but seems cool. it’s always on sale for like $5

just fired up TO and this guy's name is just “warren moon” lol. i love it

Here's my FFT problems:

  1. takes too long to rotate the camera, which you have to do all the time
  2. story is dumb (sorry)
  3. toooo many clicks! select the character! select where they go and confirm it! select the attack and confirm that, now confirm a direction and confirm that you really want to do it in that direction! etc etc. click click click
  4. got to go manually collect everything so if you really want to get all the goods that are dropped you gotta kill everyone buy one guy and then go around and pick up the loot
  5. job system = giant shrug emoji

The pixel art, font, and magic effects are all fantastic, and the cute little diorama levels are neat to look at. The rest of the game is decidedly pedestrian, ponderous, slow, and not very interesting, for my taste! It's not bad! It's totally fine! But it's no kind of masterpiece and I truly do not understand why anyone thinks it is! Every game that built/improved upon the formula is better.

So it's not that I hate the game, I just think it's fine. it's okay!

@“tapevulture”#p49814 just fired up TO

... On the Saturn so you could enjoy its exclusive and high quality Japanese dub, obviously. Right? Rrrrright?

@“exodus”#p49816 Did you play the PSP version with the preprogrammed slowdowns or you had all those issues with the regular PSX version?

By the way I always hated that the font on Tactics Ogre PSP looks like italic comic sans and may very well be in fact just that...

@“tapevulture”#p49814 warren moon

@Moon settings->change nickname

Also this thread is a good reason as ever to pimp out the excellent Shmuplations, their Patreon, and their most recent translated article on the PSP version of FFT.

http://shmuplations.com/fftwotl/

@“tapevulture”#p49805 I tried it on Switch a couple years ago and concluded that it… was poorly optimized for button controls to the point of being needlessly cumbersome, so I gave up playing it on that system just a few hours in. Beyond that, I didn’t really get a clear sense of it because combat seems slow and it takes a while to get through the tutorial-ish early game. I heard mixed things about it on the whole. The aesthetics/narrative seem solid though.

I got stuck on Wiegraf like many people and overcame the struggle by Dancing. What a game. I also like the War of the Lions localization. A long while ago a coworker and I were reading through Song of Ice and Fire and he also started playing FFT PSP. When someone say “sellsword” in game, he goes “WOAH! SELLSWORD!”

@“KennyL”#p49828

@“captain”#p49831 WOAH! SELLSWORD!!

You know, for a profession called a sellsword, they still seem to have a whole lot of swords kicking around

@“exodus”#p49816 For the record, I feel almost exactly the same about FFT. I would also add that it takes way too long to kill any individual unit. So you input all those decisions, and then have to do it like four more times against each enemy. Everything is just so tedious.

All these opinions are based in the psx original!

Oh also I wanted to say that I appreciate this thread and am enjoying looking at all the pictures. I don't want to take away from that!

But realistically we all know the superior tactics game is shining force III with the protagonist saying "ta!?" (I will find a video of this later if nobody beats me to it)

@“Syzygy”#p49784 i did a couple of the tavern sidequests but found it too tedious to wade through random encounters on my way back to pick up my dudes. also i could never remember the towns from which i dispatched them. i should have written them down. i did get to see “i had a good feeling” once though. what is actually the best way to do the tavern stuff? i could never spare my good fighters for them and IIRC you aren't allowed to send T.G. Cid et al. to investigate an abandoned mine…i was just sending like level 5 squires

dang the japanese in Tactics Ogre is hard as h*ck. not sure i have what it takes…i am looking up 1-2 archaic verbs per text box

I love shining force but it plays in a much more prescribed way that FFT (or tactics ogre, which yes is better). At least to me it‘s a similar enjoy the atmosphere and aesthetics while strolling through a tactics game experience as FFT. Different vibe for sure, but I’m not understanding why it's really any better than FFT

anyway silent storm and jagged alliance 2 are the best turned based tactics games
