I can keep my eyes out here, and off to the UK in July so will do the same there. Given me some inspiration to watch it, yet again!
Considering Lynchā stance on watching moving on small screens, thatās kinda hilarious that Blue Velvet on UMD exists lol
He changed his tune a few years ago

That interview was in 2008 when small screens were very bad. I agree at that time it was probably influenced by films being released on UMDs. Chances are he didnāt get a say on it being released like that and his views were based on it.
I mean heās known for being very clear and precise on his messagesā¦
Apparently this is only true of games! When I was shopping for mine sellers were inclined to say over and over in their eBay listings that āUMD movies from other regions will NOT PLAY in this device!!!ā Although you can change the region with CFW of course
Itās incredibly true, due to certification and distribution rights ownership varying from country to country!
I didnāt mention it as honestly I thought it was generally known with the dvd region fun of the past.
That interview clip cuts off just before Lynch says āthe PSP is good though,ā and whips his out to show everyone how he hacked it himself.
Has anyone tried one of those IPS screen replacements for the PSP? How is it? Iām kinda curious about putting one in the extra PSP I have with a super yellow screen.
PSP is in an interesting spot for me because I just donāt know whether the screens that originally came in them really contribute to the look of the games, the way an original GBA reflective screen does. Or if itās just a case of they used whatever was available and a modern LCD will just be the same but brighter and more clear. I guess it ultimately depends on the person, ghosting might be seen as a key feature of PSP games to some, or the interlaced effect on the 3000 screen.
I guess if I think about it my main worry is screen resolution. One thing I dislike about playing DS games on the 3DS or PSP games on the Vita is I canāt help but notice how blurry the games look compared to being played on their native hardware. Itās not as bad on the Vita as it is on the 3DS but still, itās noticeable to me.
Itās not bad at all on the Vita imo, since the resolution is a clean 2Ć bump from the PSPās. Enough to leave every 2Ć2 pixels as-is or have a filter use them to weakly mimic a chunkier LCD.
Sony is a big electronics corp with access to parts that other console makers just donāt have so when they want to cut a corner they do it with extreme prejudice but the decisions they made still affected the history of their systems and how people experienced them. So⦠I dunno!! I donāt think thereās a wrong way to approach this. If an IPS felt good in there then thatās all that would matter to me, maybe.
We donāt deserve this calibre of shitpost!!!
this is some hot stuff. I watched this on my F-ing telephone.
Well shoot, learn something new every day! Thank you, I had no idea.
PSP screens are . . . A whole thing.
Sharp actually made the panels in the 1000s (i donāt recall if they made the others or not, apologies) and, well, itās an LCD panel from 2004. Even at launch, they were infamous for dead pixels and ghosting from the slow pixel refresh speed. So the image wasnāt blurry per se, but motion sure was.
I donāt recall off the top of my head what the issue was with the 2000s, all I know is that I have a lot of PSPs and none of them are 2000s. Iāve avoided them long enough that I kinda forgot why!
The PSP-3000s are strange. The panel is better, sharper, brighter, and supports a wider color gamut! Honestly they look pretty great compared to a stock 1000. But the subpixels are arranged linearly instead of in clusters, which makes the whole screen look like itās interlaced at all times. It bothers me a lot more than it probably should!
Anyway, Iāve just been IPS modding my 1000s. I was having trouble with the tiny solder bridge on a couply of them because i donāt know how to solder anything smaller than through-hole components in guitar pedals. I handed a few of them over to one Christa Lee, for whom such mortal tasks are trivial. I like the PSP-1000 a lot more in general, just because it feels like a classically overdesigned Sony hi-fi device. This was āthe Walkman of the 21st Centuryā after all! Feels like a dang luxury product imo. Putting an IPS display in there is a massive improvement, imo. My favorite way to Play my Stations Portable. I do hope that eventually someone makes an OLED panel at that exact size, resolution, and refresh rate. But until then, the IPS mod is extremely worth it, I think.
edit: also apologies, iāve probably typed this like twenty times in this very thread and forgotten about it. so if iām just repeating myself again, iām sorry!
No worries, I appreciate your thoughts!! I played a lot of 1000 and 2000 back in the day, and have been using a 3000 for the past year or so now. I like the 3000(the interlaced look doesnāt really bother me) but definitely miss the 1000 form factor. It just feels so good to hold. I feel like Iām crazy for this too because no one seems to feel the same but I also feel like the lens on the 3000 is off. It covers too much of the screen or something, idk.
Getting the thumbs up on IPS from a PSP enthusiast is all I need to try it out, thank you!
This is very fun very cool art and you should be proud of it.
This animator put together a whole PSP advert but in a contemporary style. Mind blown just a little bit
LTTP but this is incredible.
Anyways, I love the PSP. The device still looks gorgeous after 20 years and while I enjoyed the look of the PS4, I donāt know that Sony has ever recaptured the level of perfection they had during the slim PS2 and PSP era.
oh man this ruuuules. granted, iām pre-disposed to like anything with a del track, but still.
Clicked on the video because I heard Del was in it.
for some reason the judgment night soundtrack came up last weekend. It was the first time I have thought about del since the 90ās.
