Questions about Discourse and its functions

Here’s an ask from me to all of you!

Has anyone noticed any performance problems recently? This can not just be related to the speed, but any other things that may have changed regarding how we all use it outside of asthetics.

We’re aware of a few things behind the scenes which shouldn’t have a direct effect on how the forum performs when browsing/posting/uploading, but bringing this up to find out if there’s anything someone may have noticed that I have not.

I’m not sure if this qualifies, but I have an issue on Firefox Android with the positioning of the reply box.

On Chrome, when I hit reply, the keyboard pops up and the reply box is directly above. If I click out of the text box and click back in, it does the same.

On Firefox, when I click reply, the keyboard pips up, and the yext box scrolls up off the screen. If I click out of the text box and click back in, it scrolls off screen again. I can scroll it back down, so it doesn’t prevent posting, but it is a minor annoyance.

This indeed qualifies - it’s tough to know what experiences everyone gets when using the forum, as no doubt we all have different ways of using and enjoying it.

As I don’t use Firefox personally, just professionally, I am not too familiar with how it plays on mobile devices. I can guess, and not assume, that it’s a browser issue rather than the forum itself, but do you see the same behaviour when viewing other websites or any other discourse forums?

If I get some time over the next week I can have a play and see how it works for me.

I don’t use any other discourse forums, but I haven’t seen this behavior anywhere else.

Thanks for the update. Will do some digging around tomorrow for you.

Just for data collection’s sake: everything’s been fine for me! Haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary for quite some time.

Appreciate the update!

And data collection is always welcome. It may be someone is having an issue and just assumed it was as is, but then reads someone else has it and then we can see what’s to do.

I like it when it’s all okay of course. No complaints if others say it’s working fine!

one thing that happens for me in chrome on windows 11 is that when i play then pause a youtube video somewhere in the middle of a thread, then scroll down through a number of the following replies, while the video is offscreen up top it’ll suddenly restart itself and play again in the background, so there will be all that sound coming from that tab but with the video and its controls way out of reach. seems like it might be a specific number of posts that scrolls by that causes it but i haven’t done the science on that yet

Contributing to the data: I’ve had that happen to me in Firefox/Windows 11 as well.

it happens to me in chrome on mac also
it’s kinda funny, in the music threads, as just a cacophony of songs start playing all at once

If you were viewing a thread for more than 6 minutes, that may have just been the horrible buzzer.

This happened to me too here: Ep. 361 - Specdracular 2024, with merritt k - #158 by DaveedNoo

I can’t remember if I was on Windows 10 or Mac but it wasn’t chrome. Maybe edge.

Had a look at this and downloaded Firefox to test, got exactly the same problem you have.

Turns out it’s a known issue with Firefox and the behaviour of the keyboard Reply composer still broken on firefox mobile - #12 by pmcpa - Bug - Discourse Meta

They said an update has been committed but doesn’t seem to be working. Can you let me what version of Firefox and Android you’re using and I’ll post about it with yours and mine to give them an idea in case it’s something specific to certain builds.

Firefox: 133.0.2 (Build #2016060039)

Android 14

Same as mine then, appears to be the latest build.

Is it generic Android or a custom build per manufacturer?

Have posted on the discourse bug forum about this one, as I believe it’s not something able to changed from our end, but I’m sure we’ll get an answer soon!

Generic, I think? Pixel 6A using provided updates from Google.

Thanks, may not be needed but in the pursuit of a fix you can’t have too much information.

Here’s another similar issue on mobile. This occurs on both Chrome and Firefox, so I think it’s a different issue.

Anyway, when a post has an expandable text box that is very long, opening it puts me at the bottom of the text box, and I have to scroll up to the top to read it in order.
