RESIDENT EVIL!! FOR... UM!!!

I’m working my way through RE8 and having lots of fun. A couple observations. So far at least, the difficulty is pretty modest (on normal) compared to say, RE7 or RE2make. Also, structurally, and please don’t kill me for this…

It reminds me of Dark Souls. ||I just played through the rooftops to get the mask of rage. That was dark souls as hell! It even has a shortcut kick down ladder which leads to an elevator that is itself a shortcut back to an earlier area!||

Yesterday I was messing around with Retroarch when I decided to boot Resident Evil 2 and found an old save just at the beginning of the RPD. I didn't have plans to play it but ended up having too much fun and basically finished Leon A in one sitting. It ruled.

Couldn't squeeze Claire B in as well but I'll probably do that today.

A good job is a finished job 😎

A friend sent me this when I told him I finished this over the weekend and “very violent full motion video, complete with shots to the head and seizure induced corpses” as a selling point is going to haunt me for at least 3 days (very specific timeframe).

Why are you guys so... NORTH AMERICAN.

</s><i> </i>&gt; You have once again stepped &gt; &gt; Into the world of survival horror.<i> </i><e>

I played RE8 three times in a row rapid fire. I got playthrough 4 (trying hardcore) up to the Beneviento mansion and that part just made me stop. Eventually I’ll finish this one, then run an easy mode and blast the 3 hour speed run trophy. This is the way.

Instead I’m starting a file of DQ11 for the first time. Love the demo that lets you roll into the full game if you want. It’s real chill (one hour in)

I'm replaying Resident Evil Remake right now and let me present you a tragic story in two acts:

I‘m really not the kind of person which is interested in romhacks/mods (unless they focus on adding qol or stuff like that) and I’d rather play games as intended, but yesterday I broke the rule and went through a complete playthrough of the romhack/mod called Kendo's Cut which, according to the official description, attempts to provide a clear and definitive answer to the question: What would have happened if Robert Kendo had survived the gunshop attack at the start of Resident Evil 2 and then followed Leon in his descent into darkness?

And what happens is stuff like this:

https://clips.twitch.tv/ThankfulHonestLampWow-7Zso36W8am3pfrXi
https://clips.twitch.tv/SavoryEphemeralCookieTriHard-AcO-zUWcmStR7dS3

(Yes, that's me talking and laughing my ass off in Spanish, apologies for that).

What starts as a amusing reimagination of the original Resident Evil 2 ends up with ||Kendo's substituting Leon as the hero of the game|| in a hilarious climax which ends up rewriting the whole Resident Evil continuity via ||time travel and also Pikmin jokes.||

What makes it so good is that, in hands of everyone else this could have ended up being an unfunny and uninspired memefest in so many ways, but the way it is executed and written feels like an accomplished and well earned narrative that is as funny as respectful in terms of refocusing the original game to fit this parallel universe of sorts. There is a sense of restraint and cleverness both in terms of the execution of the jokes, but also the pacing and the overall experience, specially when it comes to avoid abusing the comedy and wearing out the player with its sense of humour.

I feel like a lot of folks around here would have a fantastic time with this, and I'm particularly curious about what @Kimimi would have to say.

There is a link to the mod, it's not particularly hard to set up but if anyone struggles feel free to hit me up! It also has a second part that just released a couple of days ago. I haven't played that yet but I definitely will.

So yeah, feel free to share your thoughts here if you give it a try.

@JoJoestar It‘s not really my cup of tea, but if it makes people smile then that’s good enough for me :)

@Kimimi That‘s fair! I was curious because I’m a person generally not interested in these kind of things but this one grabbed me for some reason, and it did make me laugh quite a lot, so mission accomplished in that regard :D

leon really could have helped the guy out more in the gun shop it's true

@yeso On this version of the events the guy helps himself and Leon several times while also managing to steal Leon's love interest Ada Wong in the process.

Just finished RE8. I enjoyed 7, but for some reason didn‘t expect to like 8 very much. It didn’t make the best first impression: the first thirty minutes are cutscene-heavy (pejorative) and full of AAA scripted encounters, and I made the mistake of starting on hard mode—I had heard normal was “too easy” somewhere, my brother told me I‘d probably want to give hard a shot—and wouldn’t you know it, it ended up being too hard! I started over and interrupted the flow a bit. I enjoyed the device of the village acting as a hub and that the first time you run through it you run past all the blocked passages and locked doors, though I felt the whole wolfman horde + house fire set piece at the beginning was too much. You meet like four named characters who die all of four seconds later! And movement speed is so sluggish, it felt a bit ridiculous that the wolf guys (and every other enemy in the game) wouldn't be able to catch up with you in 2 seconds

Once you're inside the castle it's good stuff. I enjoyed taking a bunch of 4:3 shots in the photo mode

For level 2 they went and ripped off P.T., which worked pretty well. Game isn‘t scary much of the time but during this hour-long stretch I was definitely sweating. I generally don’t talk to myself while playing games, but at exactly one point during this level I said, out loud, in a relatively normal pitch and tone of voice, whooooaaaaaaa Jesus Christ

The “wacky” tone in this one felt a bit put on where it doesn‘t in the earlier ones. The merchant, for example. How he looks and the things he says feel like “this would be weird hehehe” design decisions where the merchant from 4 is specifically kooky because he looks relatively normal (for a cloaked, wandering gun merchant) and has an accent. Then 8 has this guy Heisenberg who talks at you like… Jim Carrey’s Riddler…? or something (that‘s who he felt like to me; googling around everyone apparently thinks it’s a Nic Cage thing, which maybe but the voice sounds specifically like someone else). Like yeso said the first-person perspective and more self-serious story focus clashes with the silly stuff to make the game somehow more ridiculous than typical RE fare, where you feel like the writers are in on the joke

I do love that there's an in-universe explanation for why Ethan is physically able to take so much punishment throughout the game (and retroactively 7).

AND IT'S GOT THE MERCENARIES HAHAAAAAA!!!

Curious JoJoestar if you recall well enough how you felt about this part of the game to explain a bit. I‘ve heard the sentiment expressed elsewhere and don’t really get it; certainly less interesting on a visual level from the other areas but I felt it a significant step up from the lake area, as well as an interesting test of the player's ability to navigate the mazelike space while juggling encounters with the drill guys

I recall quite well, lol.

Spartan and bland industrial aesthetic full of narrow and frustrating corridors with no maneuverability coupled with the worst bullet sponge enemies in the whole game, that cause the pace of the exploration to tank (I'm very funny) extremely hard and force you to deal with them even if you would rather skip them, often requiring half of your ammo each to kill, and which have a very obvious weakpoint yet you have almost no opportunities to exploit it. Basically the Resident Evil rendition to the archetypical poisonous swamp area where your movement is reaaaaally slow yet you have to deal with all these annoying and frustrating things.

Second and third areas are arguably worse, in the sense that they are definitely more gimmicky, but at least they are really short, so they never overstay their welcome and serve their purpose as a nice break and change of pace, unlike that absolute pain in the ass factory.

Wait, you can kill those dudes without hitting the weak spots??? I wasn't a fan of that area other than the big goofy propeller boywhich was a treat.

I'm pretty surprised that we're coming up on a full year since release and there still hasn't been any DLC announcements for RE8. Makes me wonder if the whole RE Team is being put on another project that they want to get out in 2022.

Maybe that rumored REmake 4?

Not in time for a 2022 release, but almost.

These Resident Evil Remakes seem like they're coming out at a blistering pace. Seems that 2 and 3 were being developed concurrently and ran on the same engine, which explains why they were released within almost a year of each other.

Wonder what that implies about the RE4 Remake, and when it was internally greenlit.

I'm a huge RE fan. The news today was very exciting.

I platinumed Village because I absolutely loved it. So getting to go through it in VR will be spectacular.

The re4 remake I still think is unnecessary, but dang am I excited anyways. I've played through it on GameCube, PS2, Wii, PS4, and started it in VR. It's going to be real nice to revisit it with a completely new light once more.

Resi 4 is my favourite game of all time and while I think the deliberate, focused and precise combat is timeless, I am very excited to get another take on it. I love Japanese action horror games so very excited.

The heat on the street is that Resi 2 was Capcom internal and Resi 3 was that new Minami studio and it didn't go so well. They were also doing Resi 4 and wanted to stick very closely to the original but Capcom switched main Dev to Capcom internal as Capcom wanted to go wilder with the changes and make a different game. All of which is fine by me, Resi 4 will always be perfect to me so a remake that is more of a reimagining sounds great.

@Chopemon I always found it interesting that people are so lukewarm on REmake 3. I thought that game was delightful. Sure, it's not the amazing big beautiful retelling that REmake 2 was, but the same could be said about the original games too.

I'd like to thank you, reading your take on the remake has me feeling more excited about it than I was when I first saw the trailer. Just because this remake is happening doesn't mean RE4 is going to be erased from existence, so I don't need to worry about this game living up to RE4. I've really enjoyed every RE titled that's dropped since 7, so I'd reckon that I'll have a good time with REmake 4
