@“treefroggy”#p156732 the biggest public tv channel over here and the one most people watched dragon ball on, is airing nothing but dragon ball today
@“treefroggy”#p156738 The wide vibrato they're all playing with feels like sobs.
Him and Rumiko Takahashi man. They changed the world. Going to blast through the dragon ball manga this weekend aren't I. One of my earliest memories is Goku on the damn cartoon network in the saiyan saga, in there with some blob of sesame street characters.
Highly highly highly recommend this artbook if you love the nineties stuff. Little Goku, lots of dragon quest, but a ton of one shot characters.

I‘m getting that feeling like I’ll need to Pour One Out for Toriyama this weekend. I didn't say it in an earlier thread when I was talking about OG FF7 fatigue, but I spent the entire time thinking “Man I wish I was playing DQ7 instead,” and a lot of it has to do with the art direction.
@"Punchmaniacs"#p156708 A few of you guys have been mentioning that Tezuka is higher up on the longevity and reach chain, but idk man when I think of Shounen style manga I literally can only conjure up Toriyama's work.
Admittedly though I haven't read much Tezuka so I might be a little biased.
@“treefroggy”#p156734 With the modern development timelines in perspective (not sure we get DQ12 before DQ11 turns ten years old), it’s crazy to think Chrono Trigger (March 1995) and Blue Dragon (December 2006) are only a decade apart. Toriyama took part in the promotion of both games. Here he is lending his voice (and chin!) for the very first TVCM of the game.

I’d love an honest documentary or oral history of how Blue Dragon came up to be.

@“kunekune”#p156774 A few of you guys have been mentioning that Tezuka is higher up on the longevity and reach chain, but idk man when I think of Shounen style manga I literally can only conjure up Toriyama’s work.
Tezuka is probably indirectly responsible for about 80% of the modern manga and anime industry. Not just _shōnen_: literally the entire industry, from _shōjo_ manga to robot anime. Their influence on the medium really isn’t comparable.
Toriyama did have a staggering influence on Jump and any _shōnen_ manga following his print run, the entire Eighties, the spread of anime outside Japan, and obviously the adoption of video games in Japanese pop culture via Dragon Quest. (Probably the only people that comes close would be maybe Nagai Gō and Ishinomori Shōtarō.)
One’s influence was more intellectual and structural (and local), the other’s was more commercial (and international).
@“◉◉maru”#p156782 Thanks for the explanation, hopefully I didn't sound like a Hater. I guess this just speaks to my narrow view of the manga world, and in my little peephole Toriyama just stands so tall.
@“kunekune”#p156784 No worry at all; it’s not necessary to know about Winsor McCay or Ub Iwerks to share an interesting perspective on Pixar’s films either. I hope you get the chance to discover Tezuka’s work someday.
@“◉◉maru”#p156782 I think also with tezuka‘s work it’s important to note that his influence was very strong, across the whole industry, even if it doesn‘t really resonate with contemporary audiences as much. Aside from Dororo or Black Jack to an extent, I’ve really never been able to get into most of tezuka‘s work. I don’t like the art! it feels old! everything is sad! But similar to the huge influence of games like Pitfall, Adventure, or space invaders, one doesn‘t need to enjoy playing it today to appreciate the influence. With MOST of tezuka I would say I appreciate it more than like it. There’s just no denying the influence he had on storytelling, art, character design, etc etc.
I know a lot of folks truly love Tezuka's stuff, but even if one doesn't love it one can't help but appreciate its place in history. toriyama on the other hand, love that stuff all the way through.
@“exodus”#p156792 It is now probably easier for most people to appreciate Tezuka through the many people that inherited his work, from Urasawa’s manga Pluto to the recent animated adaptations of Black Jack and Dororo, or simply watching Disney’s The Lion King (heyoooooooooh).
Will always stick with me when the 1996 release of DBZ aired in the early morning hours of my local FOX affiliate on Sundays, and trying to find when it would play again in the newspaper. Seeing this when all you knew was TMNT felt unreal.

Made some good friends through DBZ. Helped get us through high school. Looking forward to watching it with my son.

@“◉◉maru”#p156740 if only there were a lusciously graphic'd and mechanically modernised remake of a seminal famicom dragon quest for the youths to enjoy on their nintendo switches
I never really fell into the loop of Toriyama‘s output, either manga or anime or games. I’ve just started watching Dragon Ball and loving it‘s innocence and humour thus far… where should I go from here, game-wise? I’m assuming a DQ, but where do I start?
@“Shaneus”#p157456 Maybe Chrono Trigger is a good one because its a stand-alone kinda game (at least as far as Toriyama's work is concerned).

@“tomjonjon”#p157459 I‘m playing it now. I’ve tried it before but never really got into it. I'm playing the mobile port, which is probably not the best way to do it, but it is convenient.
Turning off ATB because I'm a coward.
