@“hellomrkearns”#p157489 I’ve never been able to get into it myself. I’ve tried at least 3 times.
@“Shaneus”#p157456 Dragon Quest XIS is a great modern way to get into Dragon Quest. It is on all modern platforms, it is a pretty “standard” DQ experience and it has many modern accessibility features.

The most Toriyama-ish DQ in terms of design and themes (notably parenthood) is probably Dragon Quest V – its PS2 and DS remakes are both pretty good. Toriyama’s impact on Dragon Quest is more obvious in the IV-V-VI era, probably through sheer serendipity as this 1990-1995 stretch was also the era during which Toriyama had the biggest influence on Japanese pop culture overall.

If you don’t mind the HD-2D style, remember we are supposed to get Dragon Quest III HD-2D sometime soon. III and V are the two legendary DQ games in Japan. III is much more a Horii joint than a Toriyama joint but Monsters are very important in the game and, obviously, Toriyama’s crucial contribution to the first three games was his revolutionary monster design.

Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure on the GBA is the best game set in the original DB universe. I guess Dragon Ball FighterZ is the safe choice for DBZ.

There are no great Dr. Slump games but the PS game has its PS1 charm. I don’t think it has a fan translation. Unfortunately, it is based on the much tamer 90s TV show sequel instead of the bonkers original series that made Toriyama a star.

For original games using his design, Chrono Trigger is the obvious classic.

For those of you like @"hellomrkearns"#p157489 who could not get into it, maybe the more modern Blue Dragon might be your jam? It’s a lesser RPG, but the HD look might be easier to get into nowadays, and from the Toriyama perspective, the world leans even more into his love for mechanical design. (Fun fact: Toriyama accepted to work on Chrono Trigger because he was bored of the heroic fantasy theme in DQ.)

Same will go for Sandland in a few months, maybe. The game looks super mid but, in all fairness, the one shot manga it is adapted from wasn’t a masterpiece either.

Tobal №1 and Tobal 2 are the go to choices for the martial arts aspects of his work. I’ll spare you from Go Go Ackman.

[It does actually](https://cdromance.org/psx-iso/dr-slump-jpn/)! From the same team that did Racing Lagoon, BokuNatsu 2, etc.
@“◉◉maru”#p157530 Oh my goodness, this post is far beyond what I was expecting! Covers exactly what I was hoping and even scenarios that could account for my ADHD. Thank you so much
Also, just so happens they that Bamco has a spring sale on Steam right now and FighterZ is going for a song :)
half-baked observation: the amount of contemporary manga/anime that centre around DnD/rpg stuff are direct descendants of dragon ball's sense of progression for its characters and the overall synergistic relationship between dragon ball + quest (plus the rise of dnd in mainstream i guess whatever)
Bit late here but this one hit me hard too, Dragon Ball Z was very formative to me. I think the first anime I ever watched, certainly the first one I truly cared about. I remember being reduced to tears as a kid because I had to go to some family engagement and miss out on that week's DBZ just as the Namek saga was heating up.
The guy has just been so omnipresent in my interests basically as soon as I started developing my own sense of taste, so much so that I didn't even really consider what a huge part of my life his work has been until I read the news. What an incredible legacy he has left behind.
Toriyama‘s work is my comfort food. I’m a big Dragon Quester and his art is a large part of what brought me in. I‘ve been watching a couple episodes of Dragon Ball everyday since August of last year and it’s gonna be a little bittersweet now as I keep trucking through the series. Love you, Toriyama
So I‘ve started playing DQV on the ol’ trusty DSLite and… I guess I like JRPGs now?
Sad he's gone. I did like his DQ/W monster designs. His DBZ stuff was definitely not my style and hopefully his passing will drive people to look at his more varied works, like Dr. Slump.
I had to go to my Dad’s place and dig through some old boxes and I’m glad I did because I knew I still had these. I have about 100 pages of these old comics I did from when I was like 7-8 years old lol

DBZ was truly so consuming for me that it’s still the only thing I have ever made any kind of fanfic/art of.
@“sabertoothalex”#p159541 I, like many others, have many elementary school DBZ memories.
Namely my redneck buddy, when assigned to “write your biggest wish”, wrote “To Be Vegeta”, then erased it, and wrote “To be the Strongest Person in the World”.
He is now a professional sport fisherman.
I've been buying all kinds of Toriyama manga over the past couple of weeks, and so has everybody else, apparently. You walk into any new or used bookstore over here lately, and the Toriyama section of the manga corner is just a gaping hole, cleaned out.
Still, I've managed to snag vol. 1 of the Dr. Slump bunkoban, brand new. All the subsequent volumes are going for double retail on Mercari and whatnot (though some volumes are still available on Amazon, a platform I try hard not to use). That first volume is hilarious and unbelievably lowbrow, but it really shows that Toriyama was the GOAT. He was inventing a whole new style that had never been seen before.
Also found vol. 1-5 of Dragonball in the big red kanzenban edition, at a Book Off in Ogikubo. It's wild how much more enjoyable that early part of the story is, when it's just Goku and Bulma and Kame Sennin (Master Roshi) goofin' around.
I already owned Sand Land, but I've also picked up Cowa!, Kajika, and Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. No idea when I'll read those, but it seemed important to grab them while I can.
We all know Shueisha is going to cash in sooner or later with some kind of Complete Toriyama Library. This hard-to-findness of his works is obviously only temporary. It's nice to know that I and countless other people are revisiting and discovering his works at the same time, though.
I grabbed a copy of Sand Land as well, I read it digital and loved it so no better time than the present to get a physical book. Unfortunately Dragon Ball in English is in kind of a weird place imo. The Viz translations are like 20 something years old and they reallllllllly show it. Looking at various scanlation projects, some of them make choices I just can‘t hang with(Buruma instead of Bulma) and there’s an endless list of various versions. Original volumes, kanzeban, full color editions, there are a lot of choices!
I also tried finding a couple DQ and DB art books but they're all sold out atm like you'd expect.
when i heard about this, i thought it wasn’t real. i thought someone was like. trolling when i heard about it on my twitter feed. even to this day, it’s still rather difficult to believe? the very icon of my childhood memories (dragon quest/dbz) is gone.
it’s just. idk. toriyama’s one of those people you would think would live for like, ever. of course everyone dies at some point in their lives, but it’s just. how it came out of nowhere that surprised me more than anything.
Anyone tried Sand Land yet? It’s a friend’s birthday next week and he’s a huge Toriyama fan, so it seems like a no brainer, but I’m seeing very mixed reviews. Trying to decide if it’s a fun 7/10 or a boring one.
I played only like 20 minutes but looks like a fun 7. Like all 7s it depends entirely of the person playing.
Started reading the manga this week to get some hype and knowledge beside “it has toriyama vehicles!” and really enjoyed like half of it (8/14). I stopped when I saw a game trailer again and realized I knew all of the characters. Confirmed my “fear” when I saw the start of the game is EXACTLY as the manga.
This may be a good thing because it means the story is good and not some weird invention to make a videogame out of something. Just didn’t wanted to be spoiled.
Fun fact about the manga, at the start the protagonist is gifted a PS6 with Dragon quest 12. A wild prediction in the year 2000. In the game is just “a console with some games”.
I’d say you wrangle some toriyama vehicles in front of them and see how they react. Decide based on that.
I got it and am gonna give it a try today. Reviews seems to indicate it’s boring but for a true Toriyama head I think there’s probably a lot of intangible goodness in having a world full of beautifully rendered Toriyama art.
