Show me anything Namco (pre Bandai)

@“hellomrkearns”#p77733 I will take inspiration from this.

if I ever wheel around a solar powered CRT + retro console setup to the beach or anywhere else,

no matter what console it is, I'm gonna try and go for this aesthetic for whatever cart I use…

Fellas I had no idea until this week that Katamari on the Funk was a cover from Ridge Racer PSP.

I definitely knew about many other namco references like metro cross in noby noby boy

https://youtu.be/VaMOJz52auo

Also I think it’s safe to say noby noby boy is definitively an “obscure game” lol

@“treefroggy”#p79086 It was established in Ridge Racer 6 that みんな大好き塊魂<Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy> a.k.a We Love Katamari (the second PS2 game) is canonically Reiko Nagase’s favorite game, together with Pac-Man.

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/bhUzQzj.jpeg]

And the Ridge Racer series is canonically set in the same universe as the Katamari Damacy series, which makes the previous trivia slightly more troubling.

@“chazumaru”#p79092 her dress with the red flags is a RALLY-X reference, right? Namco is kind of the best at these things

@“treefroggy”#p79112 Oooh this one?

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/m9Fp6Ya.jpeg]

I had never connected the ~~dots~~ triangles with Rally-X! Within R4’s universe, those red flags are the stylized RRR logo for the [Real Racing Roots](https://ridgeracer.fandom.com/wiki/Real_Racing_Roots) series; I don’t know (development-wise) whether the logo came first or whether Yoshimizu Kei designed her iconic dress first and then the design was maybe retro-fitted in the visual storytelling of R4’s world building. I need to dig a little bit on that Rally-X (or any early Namco game) reference idea; it would indeed be a very Namcoish thing to do. But the "iconic" Rally-X flag is yellow.

I used to have a penpal relationship with Yoshimizu something like 15 years ago but I’ve sadly lost touch with him since. Now I regret never asking about this specific visual detail…

@“chazumaru”#p79092 minestrone potato chips? i thought maybe that meant potato chips that are minestrone flavored (which doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world), but when I look it up I just see pictures of chips floating in minestrone soup?? maybe this is secretly good?

edit: i am dumb, they're separated by a space

@“chazumaru”#p79123 I wouldn‘t be surprised if Rally-X didn’t show up in one way or another in the entire series. After all, namco loves to reference Rally-X, even more than pole position, I'd wager.

Learned about these elaborate 16 and 28 player full theater setups for Galaxian 3 projected on to 360 degree screen. Namco in the bubble era

To the Klonoa crew of Insert Credit

I‘m realizing that I have an urge to play Klonoa 2 before Klonoa 1.

I remembered watching DF Retro's video yesterday that I have a memory of playing Klonoa 2 at a kiosk in KMart or someplace, and thought it was so so cool, it left an impression on me. Now I have a strong nostalgic sense towards Klonoa 2 that just isn’t there for Klonoa 1, and I‘ve bounced off of the first game on two occasions. I think a lot of it has to do with the fully 3D graphics, which I don’t usually prefer at all, but it's more of a tactile sense you get from inflating enemies that are polygons being morphed instead of the separation that comes from pre-rendered graphics. Plus I was more of a Tomba kid, haha.

As a rule I play significant entries in a franchise in release order on original hardware, but this may be an exception, because Klonoa 2 is where it's at for me. and that makes me feel weird!! I need to better project my whimsy onto the first game.

What does the Klonoa crew think? I imagine I'll appreciate the story much more if I just play them in order. Klonoa isn't very long so maybe I'll just bite the bullet and play it... Hopefully without becoming to fatigued to play Klonoa 2 shortly after, and really sink my teeth into it.

Earlier this year I 100% completed the first GBA Klonoa game and had a really chill time with it. It looks awesome and is a nice game to relax with. I rarely feel like doing everything in a game but got weirdly compulsive with that one. I would recommend it, especially because I know you love the GBA. I haven’t really played any other Klonoa games, so I can’t speak to your actual question about which game to start with.

@“treefroggy”#p88905 After I bought the collection a few months back I realized almost all of my memories of Klonoa that I was convinced had come from the first game were actually things from Klonoa 2, kinda like you mentioned experiencing. I had played 1, and I remembered bits from it of course, but I think the series essentially became memorable with 2. That said, I think both games hold up really well, and I don‘t think you’re really going to lose out on some essential lore, or run into spoilers or anything by playing them out of order. After playing through both again after all these years, I am really at a loss to think of anything in particular that improved with 2, so you could probably even think of them as (mechanically) two parts of one long game instead of a big sequel, especially since the big selling point of 2 was the improvement in graphics.

No no no no no these are all just spin-offs to the true Klonoa experience.

Apparently never got released in North America?! Huh. I guess they mistook Klonoa for one of those dirty euro mascot platformers.

Pretty sweet game. It made a peculiar use of the Dual Shock: you could split controls on each side of the controller (Joy-Con style) which allowed for 4 players volleyball with just two controllers.
