Sonic The Threadhog

@“exodus”#p92511 i'm going to gently disagree and say that the poppy emo in the first boss level is just what the doctor ordered. It really felt like Sonic was Back, for a moment there.

Maybe sounding like it was released in 2002 even though it's 2022 was the point?

I think the issue is I have been annoyed by this stylistic change for 20 years and haven‘t changed my mind about it. ha ha. it also doesn’t help that my opinion about this sort of music has remained consistent (it‘s negative, in case that wasn’t clear) since I was in highschool.

I realize I'm likely in the minority at this point because sonic has been this music about 2x longer than it hasn't, now! I get that some people like this music, so it's time for me to take my toys and go home!

@“exodus”#p93177 the soundtrack has a lot going on. i‘m just listening to it on its own, so i don’t know how representative it is, but i‘d say it maybe has too much going on. there’s a surprising amount of sort of weepy, meandering piano with strings going on. that's the stuff i personally have the least patience with.

@“pasquinelli”#p93181 yeah, I was checking out the soundtrack to see if I wanted to get the data discs release and the answer was no, primarily based on the orchestral stuff. That's just the blandest music to me!

@“connrrr”#p92947

@“connrrr”#p93208 this reminds me of the reason I “boycotted” the local Sony-branded movie theater when I was a kid (to be clear, my “boycott” mostly amounted to having a mild distaste for it…kinda lacked the spending power to back up my convictions). I also harbored a mild dislike for the local electronics chain “PC Richard & Son” because I just assumed the intended “y” at the end had fallen off the sign.

While the soundtrack is largely something I wouldn't listen to normally, and I keep thinking about replacing the overworld music, there are some really big Very Sega songs from Frontiers. A few highlights (putting them in details to avoid anything that might be spoilery for anyone who cares):

As soon as this came up I immediately perked up and spouted, “OH YEAH!! YES! Oooh!” Fantastic song.

Also super good. The completion music for the mini games also made me think of Saturn Sonic.

I'm a sucker for any of the cyberspace tracks that have vocals since they feel like a modern Sonic R. I still prefer the effortless sounds of Sonic R and Metropolis Street Racer, but still, it brings me back a little.

This one almost feels like it was taken from Mega Man 8. Also probably one of my favorite laid back Cyberspace levels. Feels cute and bubbly.

Feels like an evolution to Metallic Madness.

Feels like I'm in a late 90s/early 2000s dance hall. Great song.

@“kory”#p93230 PC Richard & Son

what a name for a store!

@“JJSignal”#p93239 yeah the soundtrack is all over the place (the OST is 6 CDs!) but I‘ve been pleasantly surprised by almost all things with this game. I suppose my expectations were rather low, I wasn’t even planning on purchasing it – but I haven't had such a feeling of fun and experimentation from a major studio release in a while!

@“Neko”#p93264 My expectations were super low after Forces, but it‘s definitely the most fun I’ve had with a 3D Sonic in a while. 6 CD's is really funny. I wonder how much of it is taken up by the very subtle changes to the Open Zone themes when you unlock more emeralds?

Um..._what????_

That's amazing. I'm gonna look out for that on my second playthrough.

Which I started immediately after beating the game the other night. I couldn't help it. I can't get enough of this game. I played with most of the speed controls close to max first playthrough, so I'm experimenting with them on the low end now.

Re: the soundtrack. It's certainly not to my taste (some of the tracks are fun), but I've seen tons of folks online who really dig it. One thing I wonder... I really liked the butt rock soundtracks for the adventure games when they came out and I'm curious if anybody remembers similar negative reactions to that. I almost feel like they're trying to capture the same spirit here. I only played Forces very briefly but I remember the soundtrack for that being mostly dubstep kinda stuff, which I am also very much not into.

@“milo”#p93322 I don‘t really care for any of the butt rock in it EXCEPT for the titan on island 3. That one had a song that actually worked at hyping me up with how it dynamically shifts to the last two phases and into the final. Brilliant. Stupid fight. And that’s where the love of the rock music ends.

The only song I remember from Forces was the Spaceport song, Fighting Onward, and that's because it's very very good:

If only the game matched the same energy.

i wasn't online when adventure came out, so my main access to other people's reactions was _gamefan_, but obviously _gamefan_ would have nothing but good things to say about butt rock... i can tell you i was put off by it, butt is still wormed its way into my heart somehow.

Meanwhile in Busan.

Playing Generations with the free camera mod and this Sonic X-Treme/Schoolhouse model recreation is an absolute trip. Also just fun to see how complex and cool looking the side scrolling zones look as a three dimensional landscape.

@“exodus”#p93177 I’m here with you now. After my sonic frenzy last summer, i see adventure as the lesser of the two, and the “this is cool” hybridized sonic of neo geo pocket color and Saturn are peak along with sonic mania. Any way to Saturnify new sonic games is welcome. Like my original reaction to the trailer, which is that this open world sonic could be the first to deliver a playable sensation similar to the SONIC CD opening! Which was kind of how everyone imagined a 3D sonic could be, during the 2d era. The little guy just tearing up the hills.

@“chazumaru”#p93818 segasonic is so damn cool looking

just so y‘all know I got a wrist injury right before frontiers arrived and I still haven’t been able to play it lol
