sonic calendar stuff is neat, but i’m just gonna also repost this sonic home movies again for the new forum, forever
Funny that Sonic came to IHOP. When I was a kid, it was Denny’s that had the Sonic Plushies:
I didn’t even realize it was sonic underground until just now. I held onto this plush for many years. I don’t remember if I ended up selling it on ebay or what.
If you didn’t want to buy Sonic X Shadows Generations you do now:

Okay well maybe four of you do now!
For some reason this link doesn’t go to anything but a yellow screen. That said, I do still want to buy Sonic X Shadow Generations, but that’s mostly because I have the Sonic disease for which there is no cure.
It’s a good thing to have!
It should go to this:
I got it working on Chrome, not sure it isn’t why it’s loading but worth knowing.
What do y’all think of Sonic CD? I last played it when I was nine or ten. Back then I couldn’t tell the difference between it and Sonic 2; I constantly got lost in both games.
I started replaying it this week with the Miracle Edition, but even with all the playability enhancements the mod provides I think the core game here kinda blows tbh! I like many of the one-off ideas it presents, love the soundtrack(s), but I just can’t get past the sparse, uneven level designs. It feels to me so thoughtlessly arranged at times that I wonder if I should even be playing it. So I’d be interested to hear someone speak in favor of it lol
Sonic CD is alright. It’s the 2D 1990s Sonic game I played the least, so I’m never sure whether my reaction to the level design is unfamiliarity on my part or unevenness on its. In the versions I’ve played, my primary issue has been the load times when transitioning times, combined with the self-imposed stress of trying to get a Good Future in every act. When I let go of that pressure in my last playthrough (in Sonic Origins collection, which also - in the mode I played - allowed redoing special stages), I had a better time.
So yeah, love the soundtracks, the time travel, and the overall visual design; iffy on level design and load times. If I imagined myself approaching the early Sonic games cold, I might put CD above 1 but below 2/3/Knuckles.
I wrote the most about sonic cd when I was on my sonic kick a couple years ago on this forum. it became my favorite sonic game once I got to grips with its mechanics. best level design, best bosses, best music, best physics. it’s like everything I like about sonic 1 minus what I don’t like. prior to this, sonic pocket adventure was my favorite since childhood. I had sonic cd as a kid and wasn’t into it.
I feel the open level designs lend themselves to letting sonic fly across the sky with the use of ramps and stuff more than any other game and it feels amazing.
I played it on original hardware and only used debug mode a few times to get to really difficult places.
It’s a masterpiece, in my opinion. It’s very strange and different but it’s a game that shines if you approach it with less of a goal-oriented approach and more just focusing on exploration for the fun of exploration; to see what’s there. What happens if I do this? Might be nothing, might be some rings, might be a power-up or time travel spot, who knows. The levels are all so huge and have their alternate forms which all let you access different spaces and hear different (awesome) music. I like to go into a stage, go to the past and make a Good Future, then return to the present and go further forward to see exactly what difference I’ve made. The addition of the Metal Sonic holograms that don’t actually do anything measurable, just make the future areas a bit nicer? Inspired.
For the goal-focused stuff, there’s the Time Attack mode which is very full-featured, including multiple unlockable features accessible by lowering your overall time. It’s a total blast and one of my favourite Sonics.
Sonic CD update: I started the game over and wow yeah there’s an obscene amount of game here that I totally missed. I spent an entire hour just combing through the first two zones, messing around with time travel and looking for false walls. Safe to say I get it now! Very different texture from Sonic 1 and 2; actually reminds me a bit of SMB3 with its density and verticality.
Thanks everyone for responding before! Really glad I gave it another go.
I’ve finally come around on Sonic Advance 2. I feel I’ve put in enough time to have it click and I do see the way it adds value to sonic advance 1’s engine. It seemed brain dead at first but it’s not, just different rules and more fast paced. Which is cool!
The bottomless pits and cheap deaths suck and require some degree of memorization or replaying though and I still don’t understand how special rings are supposed to work. The bosses also are really hard but once you get the hang they are fun. Just sucks you gotta play both acts again when you run out of lives on the boss, but it’s kind of balanced once you get the hang of it. I was maybe too harsh on SA2 but still I think the first game is the best and least gimmicky.
Most of all the graphics continue to be super stylish and the music is great.
I’m happy to hear you ended up liking it!! Sonic CD is by far my favorite 2D Sonic game. It’s the one I constantly go back to when I wanna play 2D Sonic because there are so many different ways to play it.
Plus, imho, it’s got the best style in any Sonic game, ever. Take Sonic back to surreal, psychedelic landscapes and levels plz!!
I’ve never checked out the miracle edition that you posted but I think I will! A few years ago I think I would have balked at something like that, but ever since Sonic Origins retroactively giving Sonic the drop dash in all the old games, I’ve been more open to the idea of gameplay mods like that.
Oh totally. I never used to see the appeal in retroactive changes like that (Knuckles in Sonic 2 for example). I was haunted by the ghastly specter called “intended experience” lol. But that drop dash is just too good!
@treefroggy There’s a mod out there on The Internet called Sonic Advance 2 SP that makes some minor tweaks and makes it easier to access special stages, but the headline change is that it removes all bottomless pits and replaces them with alternate routes. Recommended!
I like Sonic Advance 2. It doesn’t have that labyrinthine level design that you can impress yourself with as much as the other Sonics, but it feels like a shaved down yet amped up Sonic 2 in that you can just pick it up, start blazing, and keep blazing. And if I remember correctly (I’m sure there are exceptions, as there are in almost every Sonic game), it has a minimal amount of “what the heck do you want me to do here” moments, as Sonic games go
Yeah I saw that. Gonna play the game vanilla as much as I can. May resort to various methods to get all the emeralds.
Cream as a “push A to win” mode is brilliant.
