Phantasy Star Online Ver.2 PAL MK-51193-50

I’m a big fan of how the Valis discs use blue! Obviously it’s really striking on this first disc, along with the pure black Yuko silhouette, but I really like how it’s used to color and shade characters on the sequels’ discs. Just a really neat convention to have across the four games.

While I brainstorm specific examples, let me just say that every PS1 disc is a dope disc because that black surface is so badass. The purplish-bluish PS2 ones were aight too. Oh, and the GCN discs were adorable.

Serious answer: the rounded edges of Wii U discs are so pleasant to handle.

I am pretty sure that’s the only time in my life (about two years ago) that I have bought a game solely because of the disc art.

Here’s some of my favs from my personal collection:

Octotune : Splatoon 2 Ost.

(I hope I haven't opened the non videogame disc floodgates)

That Splatoon disc design reminds me I love two-tone stuff and generally Nintendo’s covers following that technical limitation and/or economical mantra have left an impression on me. Gamecube discs were cute like all small things but they gave very little space for fun design once you remove all the obligatory logos and legal lines. Wii gave much more real estate to the creative minds at the company. Also there were sometimes cute variations among regions.

I believe the first Wii game to break the two-tone rule at Nintendo was New Super Mario Bros. in 2009 (feel free to correct!). Which at the time definitely made the game disc pop, and the character symmetry with dot patterns on this specific disc art is iconic, but the art of subsequent Nintendo games on Wii lost the charm of two-tone discs, retrospectively. Only notable exception that comes to mind is the pretty clever use of the disc hole for Xenoblade’s disc art.

Among Non-Nintendo examples of two-tone ascetism, I like the continuity of Street Fighter Zero with its heroines, even across different platforms with different design guidelines.

lots of great discs here, but my heart cries out for this one, not because of the game either, but it's just... it's the sg1000 all over again, i don't know.

I’ve always been partial to these ice blue MGS disks

Hot damn these are very good

I was just reminded today that I once owned this Yoshi's Story soundtrack CD that is actually shaped like Yoshi's head:

@“fridgeboy”#p39992 I especially appreciated the contrast with the classy minimalist red and white cover art

Nice @“Jax”#245 , I was gonna post Ore no Ryouri, my friend gave me a copy last year.

Lots of good picks here. IMHO Japan respects the disc art way more than the US. It's always better.

Screen print > vinyl label

I really don't want to collect discs though (which means I truly want to deep inside and it's just not reasonable at all)
Below are two examples of games I love that I bought just because the Disc + cib art is wonderful.
Doubutsu Banchou (Jp Cubivore) has disc art that is striking

The Disc for Monster Farm (JP Monster Rancher) is of the iconic Mystery Disk fof the series. It's an example of how in the US they just made really bad choices. Why would you make the disc art anything but this? The Mystery Disk symbolizes the connection between the game world and the real world. It's even in the US anime localization, making kids everywhere wish they had a real Mystery Disk!

Japanese Discs are always better. So far for my digital PS2 library I looked up the Japanese version disc art for every game in my collection, to see if I wanted to include the image in my OPL library interface. Eventually I may just look up every single game in all my libraries to see what the JP disc art was like, while it's still easy to do on ebay.

I will always love the grit and texture of GC discs 🥰

@“sabertoothalex”#p40040 Before your post, I hadn't even considered a UMD as a disc!
