So what is everyone planning on playing before the online service shuts down? I‘ve not done huge amount of online play on the 3DS: Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and a failed attempt at Pokemon with a friend. Are there any interesting online experiences that I’m in danger of missing out on?
Tri Force Heroes is super fun, we’re open to more members since we’re having trouble getting three people at a time. So far we have played twice!

@treefroggy Great, I’ll get myself set up! I’m in the UK however, so I can’t promise I’ll be online at a useful time.
Does the New 3DS have really crappy speakers or is it just my unit
Ok, setting aside my original console hardware puritanism, I will admit the 3DS port of Dragon Quest VIII is great. No 3D is kind of disappointing but still a great package here.
I’m playing a “restored” patched version, but I also believe rather deeply the chiptune ost we got in the US is equally as important and good as the orchestrated one.
I figure, I still have DQVIII postgame to look forward to on PS2, why not casually enjoy a stroll at my leisure through one of my favorite games for the third or fourth time in a new form factor?
(without getting too sidetracked on that topic because I’ve talked about that sort of thing a lot on here, and tim rogers has in videos as well– I’m annoyed at how one-sided that discourse was by mostly zoomer DQ newbs and how it dominates all dragon quest content on youtube to this day)
Anyways, between EOIV, Bravely Default, Crimson Shroud, DQVIII, it seems like 3DS was when RPG soundtracks had arrived on portable systems. Often fully orchestrated, streaming audio.
@treefroggy I would argue that the RPG music arrival happened on the PSP first, but the 3DS had good stuff going!
@exodus I thought of that! I played so many RPGs on PSP! I’m not sure why I don’t consider it the same, since I consider it the iPod of portable consoles and used it as such! Maybe because None of the games I played had fully orchestrated soundtracks? Dissidia FF sure had sweet tunes though.
@treefroggy The one I got doesn’t have great speakers, but does any 3DS? Doesn’t seem any worse than the o3DSXL, at any rate.
Are you gonna share pics, froggy??? I wanna know what that ebay listing delivered
Pokemon Omega Sapphire also barely has any 3D…. lame!! Somehow hits much harder than the lack of 3D in Dragon Quest, because it’s a 3DS exclusive remake!
@captain
Sure! yeah I’ve mainly just been configuring it the past few days, only today did I start back on EOIV again. Need to get back into the swing of gaming, but a certain someone has been hitting me up every day all day, eating into my gamer time!
It’s in really good shape. IDK if the screen is slightly yellower in tone or if the OG3DS is just excessively cool hues.
It’s true what they say, this is peak nintendo design. everything feels great, except the power button is a pain to depress.
I also am now in my era of only using the internal stylus for emergencies, and I carry around these fat DSi XL, OEM(!!) styluses which are new old stock available for purchase in packs of 5 for $8 while supplies last. They are true new old stock, originally manufactured in china, with the nintendo logos and model numbers, and quality design. These are what were packaged with DSi XLs. Very comfy, perfect for big hands.
as you can see I already put a nice lil ding in my new aluminum case. it’s doing its job!
fwiw DQVII has fantastic 3D, some of the best I’ve seen on the system. Been such a joy to look at.
I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never played a DQ game. Is VIII on the 3DS a good starting point?
@glob If your 3DS is hacked and you can patch the orchestral music from the Japanese version back in, yes. Lots of QoL improvements over the PS2 release.
Bottom screen is more yellow than top and the speakers distort 20% more than my OG3DS. Might return it. It’s a shame you can’t get a like-new system for $200. My OG3DS has better output. New 3ds is comfy and able to be overclocked (a real game changer) but not worth the trade in this case…
@meunierd It is indeed hacked, so I’ll have a look at those mods.
Somewhat serendipitously, I was chatting to a colleague today and it turns out he’s currently playing the PS2 version. I didn’t even know he was an RPG enjoyer so that definitely bumps to the top of the backlog. It’s always fun to have someone to compare notes with.
What are some of the 3DS games that make the most / best use of 3D? I looked at a few lists, but of course they are overlooking many titles exclusive to asian regions.
The obvious ones are the first party games. SEGA, Level5, ATLUS, Square Enix, these we know.
rosalina custom firmware has an option to adjust the color temperature of the two screens independently!! This is great! I can fix the lower screen being too warm!… I can live with the speakers, they are really easy to replace, but I also can just use headphones anyways…

Also I like this guy trying to explain how gamer groupthink ruined the 3DS market and why he thinks the dings & imperfections add character and sentimentality to his consoles, and that the one you used and liked most will always be the one you liked and used the most:

@treefroggy What are some of the 3DS games that make the most / best use of 3D?
MK7. 3D Land. Star Fox 643D. Bravely Default. All ports of Gyakuten Saiban. Every Sega 3D Ages release except maybe Streets of Rage 2. Pretty much any dungeon crawler like Etrian IV, Soul Hackers and the oft overlooked Lost Heroes series. I like the 3D effect in Fire Emblem Awakening a lot as well. It’s pretty decent in the Monster Hunter games.
@treefroggy The recently released Virtual Boy emulator, Red Viper, is pretty amazing!

@treefroggy that EO theme is awesome
@treefroggy gamer groupthink ruined the 3DS market
it definitely seems to have ruined the activity of looking for Youtube videos on the subject. They're all the same! Look fellas I already know I can hack my 3ds it's easy here's how to type 3ds.hacks.guide into a url field, what I want is for you to show me nice amateur footage of yourself playing different GBA games on the system. Is that too much to ask???
