@treefroggy What are some of the 3DS games that make the most / best use of 3D?
Mighty Switch Force 2! One of the best looking 2D side scrollers on 3DS. I loved the use of particle effects in the foreground layer. Really "pops out" and enhances the graphics without being distracting. The controls are kind of stiff, but it's more of a slower paced puzzle platformer anyway, so I don't mind so much.
@treefroggy There is no Pawapuro or Pawapuro-kun Pocket (Pawapoke) game on the 3DS. Their sports games on the 3DS were brutish ports of PSP games (e.g. ProSpi 2011 and Winning Eleven 2012〜2014), typically resulting in worst performance on 3DS than PSP(!), and they quickly gave up on the hardware for baseball games, opting for the PS4 and Vita combo instead (but more importantly their mobile games), until the Nintendo Switch finally clarified things for confused Japanese publishers.
Pawapoke’s last game was released on December 2011 for the Nintendo DS, until the 1+2 remake Pawapoke R on the Nintendo Switch.
@treefroggy Not games but Pixel Maker Studio is a nice pixel paint program that allows for manipulation of a few layers’ 3Dness, and Voxel Maker is a simple but effective voxel drawing program. The 3D in that is worth just a peek at least.
Welp. I’m back to using my OG 3DS again because my new 3ds has not only distorted audio from the speakers, but highly distorted from the headphone Jack also. It sounds terrible and ruins the experience. If there’s a fix I’ll do it, if there’s not I may return this ish. I could use the two hundred dollars anyway. Since it’s affecting the headphone output that means the internal amplifier or something is fucked.
i‘ve been picking up my 3DS a lot more recently, though mainly to play some DS games. it’s got a really nice form factor! i always used to get the XL versions of the DS variations but when I got a new 3DS i chose to get the normal size and i think i prefer it.
It took me a while, but I finally rolled credits on DQVIII this morning. I had a ball and will certainly give XI a go at some point. I loved the attention to detail. They did a fantastic job of making the world feel truly lived in. The whole experience comes across as very high-quality.
It’s been nice to put a little more time into the 3DS after neglecting it in a drawer for so long.
Thanks for the recommendation pals! And thanks again @meunierd for your help getting the orchestral mod running.
Never had a ds nor 3ds. Wanted to buy a used one. The 3ds plays all ds games right? Do you recommend paying more for a 3ds rather than the original ds?
3DS plays all DS games natively but unfortunately it scales them weirdly due to the difference in screen resolution. On the other hand, there’s no DS model that has both a backlit screen and a good D-Pad, whereas every 3DS model has both those things. So if you don’t mind your pixel art looking a little blurry, the 3DS might be the best way to play DS games anyway. Plus it’s got a few good games of its own. Attack of the Friday Monsters, dude…

If you hold down select when booting a DS game you can get the original resolution on the 3DS, though you get these big black borders in all the not-used screen space
Oh sick no way!! Just tried this and not only does it work, the resulting image on an XL, even with the black borders, is still bigger than the original DS screen. Good to know!
