I’ll be keeping an eye on this project
Was asking around elsewhere on the forum, but can anyone here recommend a USB-C charging port mod? I looked around a little online and saw some folks fried their mainboards. Seems like user error but it’s nice to grab something “peer tested” when you can.
I don’t know the answer to this but I’m curious to know why you want it - is it in case the chargers disappear from the world?
Yeah, I’d rather not have to rely on an aging proprietary charger, but it’s mostly for fun and convenience. I like to tinker with things and practice repair skills. I don’t think we’ll run out anytime soon, but USB-C is everywhere and cheap. I had to replace the sticks and battery on my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller and that was a pain in the ass but waaaaay better than buying a new one when the busted parts should have been made replaceable.
I also have a very clear memory of when my old PSP charger sparked and died lol. I had another 3rd party cable but it never really lasted and the barrel jack socket stopped working reliably. USB-C is designed in such a way that the cable takes the strain so you’re less likely to have that problem.
You can solder pretty much any USB-C breakout board (like this one here) to the charge port of the 3DS. Just solder the “V” on the USB to the 3DS’s positive charge input and the “G” to ground. Here’s a snapshot I pulled from google real quick:
You can either remove the old charger like in that pic and cut the hole a bit to make room for the USB-C port, or you can cut a new hole to keep the original port.
Hope that helps!
It does, thanks! I didn’t think it’d be that easy. I read somewhere about needing something extra for it to be proper compatible. I want to say it had to do with USB 3 compatibility but I’ll have to look into that separately.
as alluded to in Jan '25 Monthly Game Club - Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale, i dug out my old 3ds (a new-style XL one) to hack it and WOW this thing is awesome. i stuck a random 64gb sd card i had lying around in there, but after a day in the archives i regret not grabbing a 128gb one instead. i’ve installed:
- dragon quest monsters 2
- attack of the friday monsters
- smt 4 + apocalypse
- devil survivor 1 + 2
- persona q + q2
- smt strange journey
- dq 5,7,8,9
- soul hackers
- radiant historia
- eo v
- bravely default
- the dark spire
- lufia
- 999
- the world ends with you
- wario ware
- rhythm heaven
- retro game challenge
obviously more games than i’ll have time to play in my life, let alone anytime soon. and there’s still more out there that look interesting! if i would have found this before i bought my steam deck, i might have saved myself a few hundred dollars.
now that i’m 3ds enlightened, i’m concerned about taking good care of this thing. i ordered a new battery that should be here soon, but if there is anything i should know for longevity’s sake, please do let me know.
I just played Link Between Worlds on actual hardware and it made me miss using the 3ds more often. I wish for the day that a solid dual screen emulation device at an affordable price with slightly bigger and better screens.
