The Monster Hunter: Rise Thread

>

@rejj#23906 I have no idea if the free replacement thing is (still?) available for me where I live. I might just fork out for a new one.

Def try contacting Nintendo, and if they try to get out of helping you mention the magic word 'ACCC' :) I've had good experiences with their support in the past though.

>

@seasons#24226 I don’t even feel like I’m tracking, and I’m staring at the minimap too much

Yeah I already feel like I've fallen into the spiritfly-like behaviour, but instead of chasing green mist I'm looking out for different coloured blobs and mostly keeping my eyes on the mmap.

They even put the farming spots on there in collection quests :/

I wish that stuff (and the green glow on farming spots) was treated like an accessibility feature that I could disable. I have pretty bad eyes, so in handheld mode I appreciate some of it, but otherwise I'd like to turn it off.

@p3ters#24121 so when are we having Insert Credit Hunt Night???

☝️

My switcho's SW-2307-4251-6723 if anyone wants it. Still haven't done multiplayer much, I think I'm still at ★★ there? Also curious to see how rampage mode is with humans.

Apparently if you get heaps ahead in village quests you can do a 'licence test' to unlock higher star multiplayer quests.

I have not done any multiplayer yet at all. I have just unlocked 3-star village quests, does this mean that I am not HR3? Am I going to be stuck in low rank forever if I do not do multiplayer?

@rejj#24269

They introduced an HR fast-track thing where at a certain point in the village quests you can fight a bunch of monsters in one quest and jump past several HRs.

Friend code. I am going to be playing for a couple more hours tonight and probably a lot more hours this week. Post here or DM me or send me a friend request.

Brief hunting diary update:I have played a bit more, still 100% solo. I‘ve been working my way through the Village quests slowly, I’m almost at the end of the 4-star ones now. The game just presented me with my first Licence Test, which put me up to HR2.

HR is only used for online now? World was the only other MH game I have played previously, and in that all the interesting gear (anything with slots for decorations, etc) was gated behind making it to High Rank. Is it the same here in Rise?

I briefly swapped over to the Charge Blade for a few hunts, but I think I will need to practice it a _whole lot_ more. The new wirebug move that lets you guard and instantly charge phials seems very powerful, but I kept screwing up the timing. Supposedly you can also combo out of that straight in to either of a shield charge up or a sword charge up, but I don't know how to do that.

For now, I've swapped back to my trusty Hunting Horn doot machine (although my current one does not doot at all, it just has a weird church bell style instrument on the end).

I have been enjoying my time with Rise, but I sure do wish that the game explained itself at least a little bit at times. I get the feeling they expect it to only be played by people that have played _all_ the old MH games, and thus the players all come in with a high level of assumed knowledge. Ah well, for now I'll keep just wandering around and clobbering things with my Horn.

whooo~!! here's my friends code!

I sent a friend request over to some of yallz, @Blrb and @Moon

I hate this game lol. I already beat the final monster, total time was over 50 hours. I had the entire week off and literally spent it playing this game only >_<

it was my first vacation in 2 years and it would have been nice to do literally anything else instead of game, but ehh the timing just didn't work out. I'll be sure to take another vacation in a few months when a hot new game is not released lol

still, the game is fun and I'll always be down for a few hunts!

@rejj#24533

You can solo everything, even Hub quests, they're just designed for MP so the monsters are balanced a little harder. That being said, Hub isn't instantly High Rank, you have to go up to I wanna say HR4 for that. I know, Hub Rank/High Rank, it's all a bit much.

I think the idea is to play through all the village stuff which will give you the license tests that let you skip pretty much to the actual High Rank stuff which has the best (and needed) gear and equipment. You can keep going solo from there if you want or do MP, whichever.

Minor hunting update: I have made it through the village quests, taken some licence tests, and am now in High Rank. Rather than try and solo the 3-way fight for the last licence, I just went in to the hub and did the required quests to get in to HR.

The transition from the top of LR to the bottom of HR feels like the graduation from grade 6 in primary school to year 7 in highschool. One transitions from being the biggest little kid to the littlest big kid. Next step I suppose is to just hunt ... everything ... and start collecting materials to make at least _any_ HR equipment so I don't just get one-shot, and then start thinking about actual builds.

I'm still dooting the Horn, but am going to probably give the Charge Blade another go, and then probably Dual Blades. Maybe even something entirely different like the Bowgun? Dunno!

Are there any Charge Blade hunters in here? What is the magic set of inputs to go straight from the silkbind move to etiher/both of the shield charge and sword charge? That combo seems to speed everything up considerably, but I don't know how to do it.

hey I started playing Charge Blade! I'm ba da ba ba lovin it!

I actually have no idea what the Silkbind move does lol. I'm hoping someone on youtube puts up a tutorial that actually explains it :p but from what I have practiced...

it basically just moves you forward with your weapon drawn, and pressing X upon landing will attack with Sword, while A will attack with Axe.

I'm playing with the Axe Charge move, so the great thing about the move is that it does not remove the Axe power up, whereas sheathing, weapon switching, or wirebugging after a knockdown does... so this allows you to essentially get in with your powered up Axe since actually moving with it drawn is too slow. Just make sure to use an Axe attack when you land, else you'll lose your power up if you choose to attack with Sword. I imagine the opposite is true if you choose the Sword charge over the Axe one.

so it's not about using the silkbind move into your powered weapon... it's power your weapon first, then using the silkbind move.

does that make sense? lol.

@p3ters#25062 There‘s two silkbind moves, one on X and one on A. I’m talking about the one that does a big guard/block. You set your shield up and hunch behind it. If you block an attack with that move, you immediately get fully changed phials, and supposedly there is a way to combo out of that directly in to powering up your shield or sword.

Capcom put out a thing saying that in the first week, Rise sold over 5 million copies. That's a nice payday for them!
They have given everyone a pack of Stuff to "celebrate", make sure you check in with the mail cat

@p3ters#25062 Yep. I think the silkbind dash is meant to be used with the sawblade axe switch art. It's hard for me because I love that saw blade but my muscle memory leads me to sheath in monster hunter every time i feel even slightly threatened

So the charge block skill you unlock for the heavy blowgun, which increases the regeneration of your special ammo for a while when you perform it and makes your barrel glow blue, also increases the speed with which you can charge shots during that period

o dang, didn't know so many Charge Blade users up in here lol

>

@rejj#25166 I’m talking about the one that does a big guard/block. You set your shield up and hunch behind it.

ahhh yeah, I don't use that one lol. Granted, the move that replaces it is pretty useless - slow overall, hard to aim, and so easy to get knocked out of it. Plus, the damage doesnt seem so great compared to everything else the weapon can already do.

but it looks cool! I pretty much use it as a taunt just to flex during the brief windows I can actually pull it off lol.

I have some armor skills that help me, Load Shells I think is the one? Basically, it allows you to charge all your files earlier, so when my bar is yellow I can store a full set of files, instead of waiting for red. So, I'm always stacked up without the need to use the Block technique. Plus, using the X attack in Axe Buzzsaw mode actually fills phials too, so you can just do A, X, A, X combo over and over and you won't lose too many phials from the A attacks.

Hunting Diary update part 3 (?) : I may have reached the end of my Hunting Horn run, and will be looking to farm up materials to craft up whatever comes next. There are still many builds I haven't tried on the Horn, but I came across the Rampage horn and had worked out that with the Rampage Skill “Healing Melody II” you can continually buff your team hard enough that nobody should ever cart. Turns out, like all good ideas, I am 100% unoriginal here and everyone is doing it. I do a little research and come across youtube videos with build guides saying to do exactly this but now with much finer attention paid to min/max on armour skills and the like.

Anyway, I've been running around dooting and healing and smashing my way through 7 star hunts and it has been a blast, but I certainly feel the need to switch it up a little. I've started playing some hunts online (searching for quests rather than hosting) and I'm coming across many more HH players now in Rise than I ever did in World.

I also see a lot of bowgun, longsword, and a little bit of charge blade. I don't see much else out there!

My original plan was to transition from HH to Charge Blade, but I think I might go for Dual Blades simply because it seems under-represented in the lobbies I have joined online. I really enjoyed DB in MH World, there was a neat health regen build I stumbled across that I'm curious to see if I can replicate.

One thing that struck me as **extremely** weird was the timing of when the game chose to show the credits scroll. When it played I was left with a "....oh. is that it?" feeling -- thinking if the credits are rolling then I'm done, right? Turns out no. Credits rolling in MH:Rise mean you have finished the introduction, and there is still even more plot to go (with cutscenes and the works) as you continue. Such a strange choice.

(online hunters need to look at their "hunter notes" in the menu, specifically the large monster pages that detail what materials can drop from target defeat vs capture, and _stop capturing every single monster every time_. I was trying to farm some material that is unable to drop as a capture reward but has a 25%(ish) drop as a target defeat, but it took so so many hunts to get because 4 out of 5 times someone would just lay a trap and mash out the tranqs.)

Well, after creating this thread and all but abandoning it I have finally had some time to put a few hours into the game! I only made it to HR2, but I'm really enjoying the experience so far. Some off the dome thoughts:

  • -

The feel of the game was a bit off for me at first, but (thankfully) MH continues to have amazingly granular and specific control and behavior settings in the menus. As I said before, the only MH game I really put any significant time into was World, so I was hoping to emulate that experience as much as possible. In addition to my standard rule of inverting all of the Y axis controls, the most key change for me was Camera Style: Focus. The default behavior of not following a targeted monster was really disorienting for me, as I would have to nearly constantly adjust the right stick, taking my thumb off the face buttons. The Focus camera felt much more natural. However, the lock-on seems way more “tenacious” than I remember in World, where pushing the right stick far enough will disengage the lock…this one is absolutely GLUED to whatever you have selected with the right stick click, so it's something I will have to get used to. I also zoomed the camera out a bit and swapped the d-pad behavior to allow changing items. Anyone else have any settings preferences or tips they want to share?

The Wirebugs were a little hard to grasp at first, but I think I am getting the hang of it. They add an interesting quick getaway mechanic to fights, which the game essentially forces you to learn in the Tetranadon mission. My new favorite thing ever is wirebug into wallrun into jump into falling charged slash with the Greatsword! So satisfying...

  • -

The palamute might be my favorite addition so far...it has made traversal so much more fun and cut out a lot of the tedium. My only issue so far is that I keep accidentally mounting when he sneaks up behind me while I am holding the A button to gather, mine, or carve.

  • -

Wyvern riding is more fun than I expected--it also made a lot more sense once I realized you do not have to use the control stick at all while attacking (unless you want to manually reposition the monster by holding down R).

  • -

The game story/structure is a little bare so far compared to World--I actually liked the fun worldbuilding in that game, though I also appreciate that Rise seems to be following the more "hardcore" lineage of the other games. That being said, the setting and aesthetic are gorgeous and, good lord, the _music_! That upbeat little bop in the hub area is just perfect, and Buddy Plaza song featuring some gentle vocals is so soothing.

  • -

I think they are doing amazing work with the engine here, but I do find myself missing some of the smoother performance and lusher environments of World. I can't help but wonder what this game would feel like at 60 FPS, perhaps on PC or a theoretical Switch Pro

So far I've played mostly Gunlance and Greatsword, though I have dabbled in my original main from world, the Charge Blade. Landing an [Amped Elemental Discharge](https://twitter.com/koybones/status/1380905837166686208) may still be the most satisfying thing in the whole game. All of them still feel great, though I have barely touched the new skills, so I'm reserving judgement.

I think I'm gonna stick with solo for the time being, but when I progress a bit more I might be down for some multiplayer! Ill post my Friend Code below, feel free to add me! Also, I should warn that I am a complete newcomer to Switch online play (and haven't engaged much in online play in general since, say, Team Fortress Classic???).

OK, time to catch up on what I missed in this thread...

edit: just heard the bunny dango making theme--GOTY for sure

    @rejj#25482 Dual Blades

I was surprised how much I enjoyed DB in the demo

I was accidentally reading about Sword and Shield and was thinking of trying that. Sounds like a bit of a KO beast, and no one seems to cut tails when I play multi., so having that as an option would be nice too.

    >

@kory#25490 However, the lock-on seems way more “tenacious” than I remember in World

This is actually one of my fave things in Rise :) Settings-wise I also zoomed out the camera all the way, and got real picky about when the gyro is used.

Rise is technically my second monhun (after World) but i feel like it‘s my first proper game. World and i just didn’t click at all: i remember the controls being offputting, and there was so much to keep track of and learn that it was a bit overwhelming. i don‘t have that problem with Rise at all, though! i bought it on impulse a few days after release, and i think i’ve played it a little each day since then.

i tend to play in 15-30 minute chunks, which is about how long it takes me to complete a village quest or two and then wander around the village. it's a surprisingly great fit for my short attention span! unfortunately, playing so slowly means i'm only on 3-star quests while my friends are tackling high-rank hub stuff, but taking my time is what i need for a game like this. i can't wait to start doing multiplayer quests once i feel more confident in myself!

also, i'm an insect glaive main! it fulfills my need for sick but mistimed flips without having to go back to FFXIV and main dragoon again, lol

I joined a hunt last night. Blue box was emptied of potions and even rations which seemed like an ominous sign (people didn‘t dango before joining?), by the time I got to the monster it was a few hits off being cappable. I’m going for a Barroth scalp so I hit the head a bit and It runs off. I carve the tail, get on my dog and top-up my sharpness, see a message saying someone's set a trap, then two people cart at once and we loose the hunt before I can even get to the monster again D:

@rabbitcomputer#25681 also, i’m an insect glaive main! it fulfills my need for sick but mistimed flips without having to go back to FFXIV and main dragoon again, lol

Haha. Shame you didn't play _World_ more as they added a big _FF_ crossover thing with a Behemoth fight that I had fun insect glaiving in.
