Well, after creating this thread and all but abandoning it I have finally had some time to put a few hours into the game! I only made it to HR2, but I'm really enjoying the experience so far. Some off the dome thoughts:
- The feel of the game was a bit off for me at first, but (thankfully) MH continues to have amazingly granular and specific control and behavior settings in the menus. As I said before, the only MH game I really put any significant time into was World, so I was hoping to emulate that experience as much as possible. In addition to my standard rule of inverting all of the Y axis controls, the most key change for me was Camera Style: Focus. The default behavior of not following a targeted monster was really disorienting for me, as I would have to nearly constantly adjust the right stick, taking my thumb off the face buttons. The Focus camera felt much more natural. However, the lock-on seems way more “tenacious” than I remember in World, where pushing the right stick far enough will disengage the lock…this one is absolutely GLUED to whatever you have selected with the right stick click, so it's something I will have to get used to. I also zoomed the camera out a bit and swapped the d-pad behavior to allow changing items. Anyone else have any settings preferences or tips they want to share?
- The Wirebugs were a little hard to grasp at first, but I think I am getting the hang of it. They add an interesting quick getaway mechanic to fights, which the game essentially forces you to learn in the Tetranadon mission. My new favorite thing ever is wirebug into wallrun into jump into falling charged slash with the Greatsword! So satisfying...
- The palamute might be my favorite addition so far...it has made traversal so much more fun and cut out a lot of the tedium. My only issue so far is that I keep accidentally mounting when he sneaks up behind me while I am holding the A button to gather, mine, or carve.
- Wyvern riding is more fun than I expected--it also made a lot more sense once I realized you do not have to use the control stick at all while attacking (unless you want to manually reposition the monster by holding down R).
- The game story/structure is a little bare so far compared to World--I actually liked the fun worldbuilding in that game, though I also appreciate that Rise seems to be following the more "hardcore" lineage of the other games. That being said, the setting and aesthetic are gorgeous and, good lord, the _music_! That upbeat little bop in the hub area is just perfect, and Buddy Plaza song featuring some gentle vocals is so soothing.
- I think they are doing amazing work with the engine here, but I do find myself missing some of the smoother performance and lusher environments of World. I can't help but wonder what this game would feel like at 60 FPS, perhaps on PC or a theoretical Switch Pro
- So far I've played mostly Gunlance and Greatsword, though I have dabbled in my original main from world, the Charge Blade. Landing an [Amped Elemental Discharge](https://twitter.com/koybones/status/1380905837166686208) may still be the most satisfying thing in the whole game. All of them still feel great, though I have barely touched the new skills, so I'm reserving judgement.
- I think I'm gonna stick with solo for the time being, but when I progress a bit more I might be down for some multiplayer! Ill post my Friend Code below, feel free to add me! Also, I should warn that I am a complete newcomer to Switch online play (and haven't engaged much in online play in general since, say, Team Fortress Classic???).
