The Monster Hunter: Rise Thread

I still want the Rathalos mount though.

Have played a bit more gunlance and just wanted to note that the new “Guard Edge” Silkbind skill is a real game changer. I rely heavily on the burst fire combos, which absolutely tear up the weapon's sharpness–in World, this would really put a timer on how long I could meaningfully engage with a monster and would especially hinder arena fights for me (to the point where I would sometimes resort to the Ghillie mantle to vanish away and sharpen). Now I have the option of executing a decently well-timed guard and regaining sharpness in the process. The window is fairly generous, but brief enough that I still feel pretty dang cool when I pull it off and makes the weapon feel a bit like the charge blade.

I've played around with the ZL+A silkbind skills with charge blade and greatsword as well--these are interesting but not quite as revolutionary. Anyone else find these new skills useful? Curious to hear how other weapons have benefitted.

I made extensive use of both ZL+X and ZL+A on the Horn. One of them throws a bug out in front of you that you then quickly dash towards and do a sweet spinning flourish, getting multiple hits in and ending with a performance granting self improvement. The other does a forwards stab that hits the monster hard, and then plays a note on the wire/string that breaks it and causes big damage. That move alone is strong enough to mount a non-quest monster on the map.

The forwards-dashy move also seems to come with some built in stun/stagger resistance, so well timed it can get you through a monster's roar, or a big hit and not stagger. You'll take the damage from the hit still, but not be knocked back or out of the attack.

The replacement ZL+A skill puts a resonating dome thing on the ground that replays any of your melodies, so if you have a Horn with a healing song (for example) you'll get double heals because the ball also plays the song. This was a big part of my endgame healy horn build (that I mention in a post above, where it also turns out everybody else figured the same thing out). Put a ball thing down, then mash on a monster with the healing melody and the whole team stays at full health essentially forever.

@rejj#25917 Those sound great! I was a latecomer to the HH in World but I had an absolute blast when I finally got a hang of it. That Deviljho horn was a beast, though it kinda spoiled me as very few others had such a universally useful set of songs. I appreciate all of these changes to make it a more viable solo weapon!

So, last night I made it to my first urgent "Rampage" quest and _boy howdy_ was that a mess. I like a good tower defense now and then, but this was utter chaos! I failed 3-4 times and decided to call it a night...I'll probably get back to it later in the week, but does anyone have any tips for this? The auto-firing weapon placements seem like a joke and it does not seem very well-balanced for solo play.

This is my first MH game (if you don't count the couple hours that I dabbled in World), I am really enjoying it! I have been trying to find a game that I play for a long time in the post game etc, and I hope this is it (usually I will get to the ending wanting to keep going but by then I am ready to move onto something else).

I have pretty much only used the bow so far and I am just going to stick with it until I get bored with it. I like it cause the animations are cool (love the way the ZL+Dodge feels/looks, and the fact that it charges your weapon up is very satisfying), and managing your distance and stamina are pretty interesting mechanics. Just got the switch skill where you jump up and shoot from the air, I think it's cool but I was just getting used to incorporating the original skill that quickly regens your stamina!

I'm only on the 4 star quests in the village, haven't really felt like I've needed to go deep into creating a build at this point. I have been going back to earlier monsters and filling out their armor sets and just wear whatever I have most recently created. I pretty much never die at this point and it doesn't feel like my attacks are ineffectual, so worrying about making sure I have the best stats doesn't seem that important. Really hoping the game naturally progresses to where I feel like I need to improve my build, cause right now I think I'm strong enough and I don't see the point of tinkering with menus for 20 minutes after every fight, although I do hope to get a grasp of how all the builds work and I hope the comes naturally with time. At this point though just messing with the movesets is enough to keep me engaged.

@kory#25919 Yeah I didn't understand the Rampage thing at all, did my first one the other day, I might just watch some tip videos on Youtube to power through it! It feels totally different than normal gameplay, I just want to hunt monsters!

@Syzygy#25882 this trial ruled so hard! the armor rewards were a bit disappointing for sure, but the palico minion had a place in my favorites for the longest time after that.

@Blrb#25877 just looked up the crossover on MHW’s side and, holy moly, the dragoon armor! the moogle palico armor! if i’d known how cool this was, i’d have given World another chance.

@kory#25919 the rampage totally kicked my butt too! how good are you with the wirebug? it seems to be key in moving between installations. but still, it was chaotic doing it alone—i get the feeling rampages are more enjoyable overall in multiplayer with buddies you can coordinate with.

@rabbitcomputer#25975 I was a little shaky with the wirebug based locomotion before, but (if nothing else) the rampage is forcing me to get a better handle on it…I'm not quite Attack on Titan level yet with it, but definitely improving!

@cubbienathan#25925 I agree re: the slide dodge with the bow! I mained the bow for my second World playthrough (on PC) and was slip-sliding all over the place. I'm holding off with Rise for now until I can make a good Constitution build, as that rapid dodging burns stamina like crazy. I tried it briefly, though the way they changed how the arc shot behaved felt strange so it will take some getting used to.

@kory#26007 I have barely used the arc shot (except by accident when I‘m holding ZL when I’m not supposed to lol)….kinda seems like something geared more toward multiplayer to buff your friends?? I need to experiment more!!

Hmmm, for Rampage tips… I don‘t feel like I think to much about it. Never really bother with using the cannons and stuff unless I’m trying to do one of the tasks. I just place all my auto ones and try to use the purple hero ones when in trouble. Don't forget to use stuff like the gong and dragonator! The gong makes you hit harder (iirc), and putting down baits and dragonating things does a good bit of damage.

I watched this vid yesterday for advanced tips and learned about the different icons on the monsters and a bunch of other shit I hadn't noticed:

Can't say it ever doesn't feel like a mess though.

Oh yeah shit, I forgot about the armour and the moogle quest. There were also cactuars as endemic life outside of the special quest stuff. The Bahemoth fight was really interesting, probably the first wall I hit in the game. I didn't enjoy the other crossover stuff (Witcher, the movie one...), but this one was neat.

Does anyone know if there is a better way to get "Buddy Ticket"s other than just hoping the cat in the Buddy Plaza decides he wants to give you one? Last time he wanted to talk to me, he only had one of those apples for me rather than a Ticket – and I need one more Ticket for the piece of gear I am trying to craft!

One thing I have started to notice after moving away from the Hunting Horn is just how powerful some of the Horn melody buffs are. Having things like Earplugs (L), or Antitode, or any sort of Healing constantly on demand trivialises some otherwise difficult things. I accidentally learned some bad habits fighting some of these Monsters by going up against them with the Horn first, and I now find myself drinking more Mega Potions than I'd like during any given hunt.

@rejj#26301 I think that’s the only way to get buddy tickets, yeah. I burned all my kamura ones on low rank armour so am in a similar boat :frowning: Sometimes I just do a couple of quick village quests to help things along a bit :frowning:

Does anyone know how to get Bnahabra stingers?? I grinded them for like an hour last night and didn‘t get a single one! The description in the hunter’s notes says that you should kill them with poison to get carves, I tried poison arrow coatings but it seems like they get die from the regular damage before the poison can take effect. Sometimes they will break apart and I won‘t get to do a carve but that’s only like 1/3 times. Not sure if not using poison affects what carves you get or just whether or not they have a chance of breaking up and you getting nothing. Is this just bad luck or am I doing something wrong?

@cubbienathan#26325 I don‘t know of any monster that you have to kill a certain way (like, with poison damage) to get carves! I can’t look it up now but I don‘t think that’s right. Sometimes you need to break certain body parts on larger monsters for certain mats, but on small monsters just whack them. Some mats only drop from monsters in high rank though, maybe that's your problem?

@christoffing#26327 Stinger is definitely a low rank drop. It must just be bad luck. Stinger is 14% drop rate but I have gotten a bunch of wings which are 19% so I really thought I should have gotten at least one!

Use poison bombs!

You don't have to use poison, it's just a good way to kill them without destroying them. Otherwise it helps to use shite weapons so their body doesn't just disintegrate. Or let your helpers take them out.

Otherwise, yeah, I think you're just having a bad run of luck.

edit: I think in World there was a skill or something that made getting stuff from bugs easier. I haven't noticed it in Rise, but it might be worth looking up.

@Blrb#26330 Cool thanks! Honestly didn‘t know poison bombs were, a thing, assumed they were but didn’t see them in the crafting menu, will have to look again!

@cubbienathan#26325 i’ve attacked bnahabras while riding my palamute and they stayed intact for carves! no idea if this was just a two-time lucky thing, but it’s worth trying if you run out of poison bomb mats.

oh man, so as much as I thought I grew out of Switch Axe, it actually has a real dumb mechanic that I've now fallen in love with.

put Rapid Morph level 3 skill on you, and the switch between modes is so fast that you can make a combo by just spamming the switch over and over again. It's so ridiculously broken that I love it lol

@cubbienathan#26325 Does anyone know how to get Bnahabra stingers??

Kunai!! I know most ppl don't use this, but it has a lower probability of destroying the bugs, and it's always in your inventory by default that most ppl completely overlook it.

actually aiming the kunai is a lost cause tho, just keep spamming them until you get lucky.
