The Monster Hunter: Rise Thread

Just wanted to pop in to say that Khezu makes me physically uncomfortable. The fact that the first thing I carved from it was “Flabby Hide” didn't help!

Also, I completed that rampage mission on my next try...I would love you tell you how, but I honestly do not know what I did differently!

Also also, yes, that moogle palico skin from world _RULED_!

Tried the current last boss yesterday, but the party carted. Gunna try it again solo. ||Seemed a neat take on the seige-style battle. I really hope we get a coral highlands/shrine map for regular hunts. Weird how you're just suddenly at this new place with no build-up.||

I'm right in to doing multiplayer now and happy to play whatever as most stuff's still useful for me. So if I'm on I've probably started a lobby or will, so feel free to drop-in or send invites. Really wish I could send PMs on the Switch. Or it would at least have a pop-up or something when a pal invites you to a lobby.

Played too much this weekend. Started seeing monster shinies when I close my eyes.

A couple more random thoughts:

I've been soloing the Village and Hub missions pretty much in lockstep, which does not seem to be the intended approach. I specifically mention this because I finally came across the village Rampage mission, and I was definitely intended to play this first. It was significantly easier than the Hub one and, more importantly, actually tutorialized WTF was going on! For any new players, I guess prioritize the Village.

I'm only at HR 3, but I have been completing all missions at each level before moving on, so I'm taking it slow. I had my first encounter with the big purple guy on the box art as an Urgent Quest in the Hub and **wow** was that a difficulty spike...made it through without carting though!

I finally gave the HH a try and I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, they clearly have tried to make it a more approachable and intuitive. On the other hand, it feels very different from World and I'm not totally attuned to the new combat flow--perhaps I have to give "performance mode" a try.

I farmed some Rathian material so I could start down the tree toward my favorite Gunlance, the Royal Burst. So far the low rank version is just as fun as I remember, though I'm trying to branch out a bit.

I am really amused at how many monsters have an attack specifically to mess with hunters who stick to their behind (like Tetranadon suddenly backin' up the caboose). It reminds me of [these backstab punishers](https://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Ironclad+Soldier) from Dark Souls II!

  • I have found it–objectively the best weapon in the game. Spoiler flag if you would rather discover this fearsome cudgel on your own:

Special mention also goes to this elegant weapon, for a more civilized age:

Hello fellow hunters! I‘m a bit of a fledgling when it comes to the franchise but I wrote a short review on my blog if anyone wants to check it out. I’ve played nearly 60 hours at this point with no real sign of stopping in sight. I'm hooked. Hopefully this will keep me going until I can grab Nier or SMT3. Check a look. . . . . . .

also yes I know they're not dragons but these are the jokes, kids

I haven't touched this for a week or so since beating it, but the fucking village music still gets stuck in my head.

Been playing _Breath of the Wild_ and keep trying to wirebug up mountains.

@Blrb#28357 Yeah, it took me some time to wrap my head around the wirebugs, but now traversing the map just feels amazing. If we could get something that combines this, Link's hang glider, and a way longer stamina gauge we might just have the most fun open world game ever on our hands.

I think my favorite use has been to just nope the heck out of a fight if I need to make some distance for healing...it's a real rush when you sheath your weapon and zip out of the way of a would-be fatal blow at the last split second!

A thing that I did not learn until very recently is that pressing B while in midair performs an air dash. A simple </s>ZL ZR, B<e> will let you move a surprisingly far distance, very quickly.

So, || Narga || is definitely one of the top 10 Darius boss battles.

My Switch just downloaded an update for the game. I haven't been paying attention to anything online, just playing the game… turns out there is a big version 2.0 update now out with some New Stuff in it!

...right when I just finished off the build I was trying to do for Dual Blades, now there are new monsters to hunt and inevitably new armour sets I'll want to make.

@rejj#28391 Wow, I just tried ZL+ZR and I had no idea that button combination fired the wirebug directly the way the camera is facing. It's amazing how I can still discover little things like this after so many hours into the game! On one hand, shame on MH for having such labyrinthine controls and just an overall not amazing onboarding process. On the other hand…I kind of love it??

I just updated as well, though it will probably be a little while before I see much of the new stuff. I'm still methodically completing every quest on each tier before I move on and have just made it to the second High Rank level in the Hub. It always amazes me how much of an astronomical improvement the HR equipment is, though I'm not crafting much of it until I can secure some Gunlance-relevant skills (e.g. Artillery, Capacity Boost).

I feel like I should branch out and try some of the weapon types I've never touched before (those Dual Blades sure sound fun!) but I'm so spoiled for choice with amazing Gunlances in this game, to the point where I sometimes just use whichever one looks the coolest. I also love all of the novelty weapons (see my post above), though I would be using the rice mallet Charge Blade way more if it didn't have terrible sharpness (thematically appropriate, I suppose).

@kory#28518 fwiw I got all the way through high rank with the same armour set (Tetranadon, which I only built 'cause I had the bits and it looks okay), just made an appropriate one for the current final boss when I needed it.

Will probably be playing some this weekend. Glad we can do apex mons outside of rampage, especially since the apex Mizu one never seemed to be up when I checked. Keen to try Chameleos too, though not so excited about Kush and Teostra.

I don‘t know if this is a thing or just a coincidence, but I’ve noticed a trend in online games (especially among Japanese players) that I enjoy:

So you know how there's just a trust system for taking the starting potions & rations from the item box at the beginning of a multiplayer quest? Since there are four of each & four maximum players, it's Monster Hunter etiquette to just take one of each when you're in an open lobby, as someone else might pop into the quest later. I've been responding to Join Requests & I've seen numerous times now where new players pop into the quest, check the item box, see that someone has taken all the items & not left any behind for new questers. They immediately leave the quest upon this discovery.

These are high-rank folks, so it's not like they _need_ the med kits or rations. It's just the principle of, "these shits are rude, I'm out." Maybe I'm reading the behavior the wrong way, but this is my narrative & I like it

@tokucowboy#28696 Haha, that’s an interesting behavior to arise organically from the game design—I like to think that the devs consciously left out any restrictions re: removing items from the box at least in part to encourage this. I have yet to go online, but I’ll be sure to stop ransacking the public item box when I eventually do!

@kory#28698 It could be coincidence, but I could also seeing it tying into the general lack of theft & the habit of returning lost items & respecting public items that you see in Japan. In any case, MonHun is a pretty good community (as far as gaming communities go), so I hope you have fun online. I‘ll get around to putting up a friend code one day, but if you ever see a Toku online, it’s probably me

I haven‘t even caught up on the new content but I think I might be burnt out finally. I played so much in such a small amount of time. I don’t think it‘s time to close the book but I might actually try and play something else for a while that doesn’t feel like a job.

just beat the story, tried a 5 star village quest and barely made it out alive. was not prepared for the difficulty spike of the “real” game.

seems like talismans are a thing now, should I be trying to craft those on the regs between missions? I finally got into a good cycle of training my buddies and dispatching them for missions/trading. this is my first MH so I’m not sure what endgame routines are supposed to look like. 😅

@jaws#29332 The initial talismans abilities are not the most useful…I made it to the second “tier” of talismans and there are some better ones at that point, though the success rate is low so I'm ending up with some garbage ones…

I wouldn't sweat them too much, just pump some of your excess monster parts into making them if you see a useful skill. In my case, as soon as I saw "Free Meal" I made a beeline for that--it's one of my favorite skills! I managed to get a level two Free Meal talisman, which means that as long as I have this equipped 25% of the time when I use a consumable item it is not removed from my inventory.

I don't know if I'm in what would be considered the "endgame" yet, but I have stopped getting new village quests and now I'm just plugging away at the early High Rank hub quests.

If you have an excess of parts in your storage and don't plan on doing anything else with them, forging talismans is not a bad option. Once you are in proper endgame, you should probably have talismans on the go as often as possible (every mission is ideal, but availability of or willingness to use parts is a limiting factor sometimes).

Don't stress out too much trying to fish for a great low tier talisman. If you are short on cash, consider just selling your excess parts rather than making talismans from them. Otherwise, roll the dice and go for it.
