Provided you have a standard NSO subscription (which would be a pretty useful precondition to enjoy the game anyway), Monster Hunter Rise is currently free to play on Switch for one week in all (currently operational) Western eShop regions, in order to convince new people to join in and catch up in before Sunbreak comes out this summer. There is also a new overpowered beginner armor set provided for free to speed things up (they did the same for World before Iceborne).

As usual with this type of trial, there is also a -33% sale promotion going on at the same time, in case your free week convinced you to keep playing and, right on cue, Capcom will show Sunbreak on March 15.

Here it is. June 30. Most important news: Hachiko costume for the dog if you pre-order.

Each of the three new monsters seems inspired by a classic Western horror story (>!the vampire dragon, the werewolf, and the Frankenstein monster gorilla!<) which is a pretty neat touch considering the European setting.
…was that an intentional reference to the Bloodborne new area sound??
Nice little tribute to Ahtal-Ka, the bestest Last Boss in video game history and/or possibly most hilarious fan homage to the Monster Hunter>!Metal Gear Solid!< series (we’ll never be sure). I guess at this point it’s OK to spoil yourself the concept unless you somehow planned to boot up Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for the first time in 2022.

Really hope we see her come back in Sunbreak given who’s behind the game and how fun it would be to tackle her with wirebugs.
I should be sleep but here I am. Awaiting this DLC unlock.
@LoBFCanti I stayed up for a bit getting into it and then thought I’d sleep in too late to take advantage of the day yet 4 hours later here we are and the party begins!
I have about 100 hours in Rise in my switch, but I have not played for quite a while. I haven’t done/seen any of the extra monsters that have been added over time - I was well in to High Rank and on the talisman grind treadmill by the time I got distracted by other games and put it down.
I cannot recall: was Master Rank in the base game, or is that an addition in the new expansion?
How does the game with the new expansion run on the switch now? Should I get it on steam instead? I don’t like the thought of having to redo everything again, but perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad - I imagine all of my HR gear is essentially junk now and would be quickly replaced by MR sets, right?
Rise goes up to HR. As per the tradition of G versions / expansions, Master Rank is one of the new features of Sunbreak.
I want to start Sunbreak but I have just recently started Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, hmm…
If it follows the precedent set by World, which was consistent with past games too, basically, yeah. It‘s not unlike the jump from Low Rank to High Rank. You might take a slight downward or lateral move with regards to your favourite skills or most finely tuned sets, but it will be a large enough step up in Defense and/or decoration slots and/or raw skill count that you won’t get more than a few quests in before you'll be replacing stuff.
One can finally realistically cut limbs with the bow in Monster Hunter Rise, apparently. I guess this makes up for the charge Lv.3 / charge lv.4 nerfs.

Pretty fun MH:Rise speedrun (until Magnamalo) at SGDQ Thursday evening. Took him just under seventy minutes, using Switch Axe, and the run ends on a pretty cool note.

Capcom USA was also smart enough to give him access to Sunbreak one day ahead, so he could double-check that all the strats would still work!
If I dive in to Sunbreak I’ll need to decide which weapon to start/continue with again. My time in Rise was spent mainly with the Hunting Horn, Charge Blade, and Dual Blades.
I loved the HH in World and started/mained it in Rise. I suppose that would be my leading option.
I watched the above switch skills video, but it has been so long since I’ve played it was hard to really appreciate what’s going on - even on weapons I played a large amount with in the past.
For anyone here that is Sunbreaking, are you enjoying it? Which weapons etc are you using?
I have not started Sunbreak yet but I am mainly Bow / GS. I haven’t touched the game since the last Capcom collab so I need to practice a little but, if someone creates an IC room on Switch, I’ll try to pop in from times to times. Usually as a giant golden boar named ‘Niwatori’, unless Sunbreak reveals some really cool drips.
I am going to rudely presume this thread is OK for all things Monster Hunter: the GDQ is holding a minor event this week during which occurred one of the best commentated speedruns I have seen in the last few years: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (i.e. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G) Any% (Low Rank) completed in three hours with tons of cunning optimizations and strats, as well as a few entertaining « well that had never happened to me » moments. Most importantly, the commentary is both warm, interesting and impressively welcoming to complete newcomers to MH as a series (and MH fans not familiar with older games).
There are two breaks during the run, which is also a good opportunity to digest the archive in different sessions if you don’t have three hours ahead of you. And if you want just a taste of the whole thing, I recommend the impressive first fight against Tigrex (1h38m29s), although the most fun missions are the ones where things didn’t go exactly as planned.

I'm curious, was Sunbreak a hit amongst the Monster Hunting crowd in here? I never got around to grabbing it, being perpetually engaged by other also interesting things to play.
Seeing this thread float up to the front page here on IC again makes me feel a slight urge to dive in, but I also know that by now any lobby I end up joining after doing my own run through the new quest(s) solo would be full of MR999 players with finely-tuned builds and I'd just be a spectator.
I wonder if it is worth holding off on that urge to go Monster Hunting and wait for _World 2_ or whatever comes next, in probably another year or so?
@rejj My usual MH pals were stuck in the “too many cool new games to play right now”, which is a good problem to have, so we have no played through it yet, but nothing’s pressing, it can wait until Christmas time.
My depressing reason for why I didn‘t play Rise was because my Switch was in Korea when it came out. My mundane reason for why I didn’t play Sunbreak was because I'm broke

Bought Rise + Sunbreak when it was on sale digitally while waiting for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to arrive in the mail and I‘m closing in on 100 hours now compared to like 10ish in XC3 (I’ll get around to playing it for real someday lol). Turns out the endless grind for better gear activates the same part of my brain as World of Warcraft did back in its glory days. Addiction isn‘t bad if you’re having fun, right?
Tried the demo around the release of both Rise and before Sunbreak and bounced off hard having never played anything in the series before but it sure is compelling once you buy into it.
Thinking of picking up another weapon but feels daunting to learn something more fast-paced after almost exclusively playing Strength Hammer until now.
