There are too many videogames. A thread of polls for the indecisive.

Can’t you play every PS4 game on PS5? I’m sure the PS4 version is what I own.

I am wrong! It does work on PS5.

It’s so weird how PlayStation 5 is one of the most backwards compatible consoles ever, in the sense that accusations it is just a fancier PlayStation 4 is pretty fair, but it was hardly ever marketed as such

This is why I liked my PS5 so much right from launch. Obviously by now it’s starting to feel like nothing has really come out for the new generation of consoles, but since I never had a PS4 Pro it was such a huge upgrade to my console playing right away even if I was mostly just playing what I would’ve been playing anyway.

In any case, the results of this poll have been eye-opening. Having been around this forum for a bit I really thought Citizen Sleeper was going to take it easily

Same, that’s why I didn’t vote for it .

Voted for Wolfenstein cause it’s short and overall pretty fun. The only other game that I’ve played on that list is Outer Wilds which is too long and sort of not really that fun really.
That being said, if you don’t know anything about it, it’s worth a 2 hour session. If you do know stuff about it, kind of skippable imho

Hmmm but perhaps the reputation of the voter outweighs the number?

If so, Weird West has just jumped into first place

Just kidding. Thanks everyone for voting! Heavy hitters voting up and down that poll.

I’m just going to start Paradise Killer tonight I think. The others receiving support are still on the eventually pile but now I’m too intrigued by this one

What does this mean? (feeling dumb)

Uh idk like meaty but not necessarily an rpg, a full serving meal type game. Nothing to feel dumb about as I was just kinda winging it.

In that case I stand by my vote, although it looks like the other DS game set in Shibuya about teens counting down to the end of the world in 7 days is going to win

I conduct my polls based on an electoral college like system, so we shall see.

The overtime I worked last month pays out as one 1TB OLED Steam Deck worth of euro bucks and now I’m tempted.

I like the idea of having my steam library accessible on my couch and on a handheld, especially for indies, arcade games, emulation etc. I’m a bit torn as it feels like a frivolous expense, considering the Switch 2 also comes out this year. Given that I played like 99% of my games in the past years either on steam or on my switch I feel like it’s a better investment than most other gaming hardware though and I’d love to get away from the desktop more often.

How are all you Steam Deck heads feeling about your purchase at the moment? Which variant would you recommend?

how i’m feeling about the purchase? let’s just say the time you spent writing this post is valuable time you could have spent in valve’s checkout flow

I have had my Steam Deck for the last two years or so. I think that timing is right. It’s my most played gaming device. I primarily play shmups, RPGs, and indie games. A little emulation. I love how it feels to hold. I use desktop mode sometimes too. It’s a bit large for traveling unless you have a large backpack and aren’t carrying it much. I sometimes long for a Deck Lite… but not so much that it’s a problem!

I use my Deck in handheld, TV, and on a computer monitor about even split. I love that I can use all different kinds of controllers with it. I have the Valve dock and like it quite a bit but the third party ones seem great too.

I haven’t tried to run any really modern games or many intense 3D games but that’s likely just because of what games I’m interested in and less what the thing can handle. Sometimes the unit can get a little warm. But there are ways to limit the power to reduce this. Many people frame limit to 40 FPS to get longe battery life between charges too.

The d-pad has a nice feel and rock to it. Buttons are nice. Haptics great. The back extra buttons are awkward and stiff, I barely ever use them.

If a game is available on switch or Steam, I buy it on Steam. Deck performs better than Switch usually. And I trust valve much more than Nintendo to have full access to my digital library in 20 years. I love that I have games from over a decade ago in my Steam library regardless of hardware generations.

My model is the 512 GB with the LCD screen. I think that size or larger with a microsd card that’s 512 GB or more is a nice balance of price and storage. Lots of new games are huge so depends on what you want to play. I’m sure oled is nice but I don’t have any desire to swap mine until it gives up the ghost and kicks it eventually.

To me, it’s the promise of the Switch but with a much larger and more robust library that I’m just personally more interested in. I don’t have a PS5 or Xbox Series, and there aren’t really enough games on them I want to play to get me to buy one. Whereas some publishers have stopped putting their games on Xbox One or PS4, many do release on PC. That seems more likely to continue and not be phased out.

Most of my library works. While not all games are Deck Verified, many work. I usually check protondb.com before buying a game that’s not Deck Verified. Also, Steam’s return policy helps if you take a gamble and something doesn’t work.

That’s all a bit rambly but I’m really positive on my Steam Deck, and I think it’s awesome for lots of various types of game enjoyers!

This is basically also my use case for it! Even though it probably can handle bigger games as well, those are still “desktop games” in my head. But I think I’d use it more for indie Metroidvanias, card games, shmups, other arcade games, RPGs, Tactics RPGs etc.

I’m leaning toward getting the 512gb OLED version + dock. Should I need more space the options of adding a microSD card and swapping out the hard drive are still there.

I don’t intend to play it on the go a lot. I never really did that with the switch either. For me it’s more of a couch or bed device so I actually don’t mind the size/bulk all that much.

Thanks for all your input! I think I’ll bite and order one soon.

Metroidvanias on it rule! Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth looks great on it and feels good to play. Perfect pixel art to screen size match.

One more thought on storage: I swap SD cards regularly. Like I have my Resident Evil + Bayonetta + Vanquish card and my JRPGs microsd card. It’s really easy and viable to swap them since it’s an exposed port on the bottom. Especially if you are playing at home a lot. Which is all just to say, 512GB will get ya’ far! And for the types of games you’re wanting to play, the speed difference between SSD and microsd wont be very noticeable.

Love my OLED deck, which I got last summer.

I’ll play AAA stuff on it, as well as indies, emulation, etc.

With Cloud Sync, I can easily swap between Steam Deck and my beefy desktop rig like it’s a Switch on steroids. It’s not 100% as seamless (I have to save and exit the game on Deck before launching it on Desktop) but in return I get to play AAA games on a machine more powerful than a PS5 pro, and then take them on the go with me on something probably in the ballpark of Switch 2.

Steam is absolutely the best gaming platform there has ever been, and any console games I have on disc/cartridge, I’m buying on Steam sales and selling off my physical library.

This is so helpful! How would you rate the docked performance?

I have a 1080p TV and NieR Replicant needed some specific tuning but everything else has been fine! But again, I’m playing like UFO 50 and CAVE shmups and old RPGs lol! I’m a bad gauge for perf of modern games
