What's in the mail?

the second film is great, but I‘m out of my depth recommending patlabor because a) I don’t know anything about or like anime (not trying to big time anyione I just don‘t get it) and b) mostly like it because you get to hang out in industrial zones, warehouses, docklands, office buildings in that sunny - sun bleached art style and color palette. Everyone is mostly chill and not screaming at each other. It’s minimally wacky. Good stuff

I guess I'm the kind of person who has Metroid posters, because I had 800 Nintendo Fun Club platinum points that were expiring and I sure did get those Metroid posters in the mail from Nintendo of America yesterday.

@“Ankh-ef-en-yeso”#p46800 listen buster, you like Patlabor, Patlabor is anime, ergo

I find this intriguing, I want to pick at this a little: What is the most low-key anime wackiness you find intolerable? Or a better question, what's some wackiness which you see as being part and parcel of _anime_, which you think anime-likers put up with on the regular, but which you can't stand? Is there stuff you can point you that you were having an OK time with but which was ruined by some dumb moment, or maybe inextricable from a louder, deeper problem?

I'd say I'm an "anime watcher" but for example I hate when otherwise dramatic shows do this stuff:

normal moment (OK):

joke moment (not OK):

@“the-concrete-captain”#p46927 I can‘t even get to that sort of stuff to know if I like it or not, the problem is that most of the anime out there (I could be wrong this is just my observation) is low detail and like 5 frames/minute. I know it’s insanely labor intensive, I just have a tough time looking at anything but ghibli quality animation. I tried to watch stand alone complex and couldn‘t get into it for that reason, even though it’s cool in every other respect

The only reason I caveat my experience w anime is that I get the impression this is something you need to develop a taste for and my horizons haven't really broadened beyond the usual suspects (ghibli, akira, gits)

Picked up some controlly bois

It’s so hard to find clean Xbox controllers with intact sticks for a decent price so I was lucky enough to find just that—within the province, even! What I need to do next is: get a set of security torx bits and hope I’m not too late to excise that clock cap from my console.

I also got a swell new bag from Thailand-based TRFGear:

I love it a lot! Fits my 8.5 x 5.5 sketchbooks and an iPad if that’s what I’m feeling.

@“Ankh-ef-en-yeso”#p46929 I’m going to say you should watch Mind Game or anything by Masaaki Yuasa, because I want to spike both your expectations for fluid animation and your aversion to anime wackiness at the same time.

@“Ankh-ef-en-yeso”#p46929 Yeah that's perfectly reasonable. I did enjoy SAC a great deal and would say I do have a taste/tolerance for under-animated action (or however we want to broadly describe this phenomenon) though even I felt it was a bit off-putting some of the time.

Films of course generally don't have this problem, it's mostly TV. Lately I've been into Yu Yu Hakusho again and have noticed that often it tries to do a lot with still frames, even in fight scenes; not exactly uncommon for anime (Evangelion gets a lot of mileage out of distant shots of characters talking facing away from the camera), but SAC just has more characters moving in general, and without a film's animation budget going into every episode there's just choppier motion generally (animators feel free to call out my Lazy Disinformation analysis herer).

@"connrrr"#p46970 Funny, I was going to bring up Devilman Crybaby as a possible exception to the TV-film animation dichotomy

Received this quite fresh copy of Namco’s Ninja Assault. Been on a guncon kick across PSX / PS2 [upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/BKFn9Di.jpeg]

Finally got Saturn Pseudo Kai cart. Flew over from HK really quick. Works great! Just ordered another stack of Taiyo Yuden clone cdrs.

re: patlabor I really like the tv series!! it‘s absolutely a slow burn, lunchtime kinda show though. it’s all about the hangout stuff where they‘re just sitting around growing vegetables or going to the one restaurant that’s an hour away, or investigating the basement.

that said, you could do worse than to watch the first movie and then get into the show.

@“connrrr”#p46970 I will give it a go ty

@"exodus"#p47110 yeah I don't know quite how to describe it but it's got an atmospheric and pleasant feeling you don't get in louder more frantic media. It's like getting to hang out in interesting things/places you see in the background in other films.

Once I learned that this Saturn multi tap existed I needed to track one down:

I ordered a lot of PS1/PS2 Memory cards off ebay, and didn’t realize I got this wonderful labeled FF8 card in the lot until it showed up today.

I’ve been sick at home all week, and could have used this bluray set of EVA a few days ago, but alas it’s here.

Continuing to grow my Saturn collection with this stunning pair of Stunners from an eBay auction. They arrived in pretty grungy condition, but after disassembly and thorough cleaning they look pretty nice. The black (JP, obviously) model was missing the Start button, so I fashioned a temporary replacement. Will have to look into a more permanent solution. Tried one out with a quick Virtua Cop session and had a blast!

@“kory”#p48073

Awesome! Saturn gun might be my favorite light gun ever. So sturdy and it looks cool as heck to boot.

So after @fetus8 posted his DAP I started doing a ton of research and ordered myself that surfans player I posted earlier and it arrived today!

[upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/QbIsgwZ.jpeg]

First off, I love the hardware design. It's It's that cool retro design and feel and it feels nice to hold.

I don't consider myself an audiophile but I loaded up a couple flac format albums and I could certainly tell the difference! I don't know how different the quality would be compared to one of those
~$1000 DAPs but this is pretty nice so far!

@“milo”#p48087 I love the styling of that DAC too! I am not the most discerning/serious audiophile, and I think it's pretty hard to justify those $1000+ DAPs, but I could def see the utility of the more expensive ones that have better audio output options (2.5/4.4mm Balanced outputs). I assume that Surfans one only has a standard 3.5mm Audio jack? What kind of headphones are you using with it currently?

Yeah it just has the 3.5 mm jack. And I‘m using some $50 Monoprice headphones. Decent brand, but I could certainly spend more money for something better. But the sound is very clear and balanced. Haven’t tried listening over Bluetooth yet… is there much of a difference in quality? I kind of imagine sending the signal through a hardline would give you a more reliable sound but I dunno.

@“milo”#p48117 Yeah, bluetooth is a no-no as far as I‘m concerned on a DAP. Depending on the version of bluetooth that yours supports, your probably limited to MP3 quality sound over bluetooth which kind of defeats the purpose. I’ve used my Sony over bluetooth just to test it, and it's serviceable but definitely not the same audio quality.

There's lots of excellent quality and afforadable Chinese IEMs out there like Fiio and IKKO, for less than $200. This is a rabbit hole that you can fall down hard.

I picked up a Fiio X1 DAP some five or so years ago and it‘s consistently one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

Today’s arrival likely completes my 3DS collection plus I got a fun GN for cheap [upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/BFI7HQG.jpeg].

Is an iPod a DAP?

[upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/iXhtsvc.jpeg]

I got in an old but actually brand new radio remote for my Wolfson 5.5g iPod this week. It sounds fantastic—to my ears, identical to the sound out of the integrated jack. I was worried it would sound emaciated or have a Cirrus DAC on-board, totally nullifying the point of refurbishing one of these, but the [two](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/IPod-radio-remote-internals.jpg) photos I've [found](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/%E7%94%BB%E5%83%8F-IPod-radio-remote-internals-1260.jpg) of the internals clearly show a Wolfson chip on the PCB! This is rad as hell, and yes I will be using the FM tuner. The cord could be A LITTLE SHORTER though, I gotta say.

I also got this gorgeous all-black keffiyeh, my second from Hirbawi.
