What's That Game? (20 Questions Edition)

### Click here to go straight to the current round (if I've remembered to update it, anyway).

  • 1. One host answering questions about one game at a time.
  • 2. The host reigns supreme and this is more fun with a bit of Calvinball about it. Be creative. Go ahead and give a bonus question if you like someone's question a lot. Answer joke questions that make you laugh for free. Whatever.
  • 3. The first person to guess the game correctly becomes the new host.
    3a. **Amendment:** Due to the active and collaborative nature of the game, if you want to participate but do not wish to or are unable to act as the host if you happen to win, please negotiate with the former host to appoint a new one. The former host can either go again, or appoint someone with their permission based on whatever logic they wish (who asked their favorite question, whoever asked the last question before the answer was found, whoever responds to a post asking who wants to be the first, etc. To give you some sort of prize, though, if you are alright with handing the question answering duties to someone else, you are free to choose the game for the next round and write the initial prompt clue, just use the forum's private message to chat a bit with the new host. Just try to make sure it's a game the new host feels confident they can answer questions about.
  • 4. In the interests of moving things along, each individual post can contain up to **three** questions.
  • 5. Duplicate or near-duplicate questions between different users asking things before the host can respond with answers **don't** individually increase the total number of questions asked, just one per duplicate/near-duplicate. It's the host's decision to conglomerate questions.
  • 6. It's the host's job to keep track of how many questions they've been asked, keep a tally on your answer posts.
  • 7. For **_MAJORLEAGUEGAMING_** pro optimization strats, if you ask 3 questions when only 1 remain, _all three count._ Play can continue until the host feels those following the thread have given up.
  • 8. If no one can guess the game after 20 (or 21, or 22) questions have been asked, the host wins, and can either choose to go again, or appoint a new host, based on whatever criteria they wished (who got closest, who asked the most interesting question, etc.). Hosts should then reveal the answer.
  • 9. Guesses of games never count as questions, and if 20-22 questions has been asked, the round is active until the host responds with the answer.
  • 10. No lying, or overly cryptic or coy answers. If the answer would make the game obvious, it's because the question asker is clever, so give them the glory. If you're gonna be coy, at least be coy in a way that _looks_ coy, so that acts as a hint in of itself.
  • 11. Hosts may lead with a hint, you can make it cryptic, evocative, make it a freebie to narrow the search down, or a tease, or a red herring, whatever you want.
  • 12. In between when the first correct guess is made and when the host can confirm the round complete, whoever puts in a correct guess will get a number of points equal to the questions that remain. "But what about if you just copy the correct guess from the other poster?" Sure, I'll leave the system easily exploitable like that, but if you're posting on this forum, are you really the sort of person who would just bandwagon your way to glory like that? Oh, you are? Well, cool, games are supposed to be fun so if you find that fun go ahead and have fun! It's only your Insert Credit Club Honor on the line...

    —The Beautiful Games—

    A record will be kept of all games which conclude with point values greater than or equal to 15.

    @arauz with 15 Points!
    They guessed correctly in a round hosted by @kory where the answer was _Grim Fandango,_ knowing only that it was _originally_ an American developed PC game released between 1995 and 2005, later released on several other platforms, and had _something_ to do with skeletons/a skeleton.

    Yours truly, with 15 Points!
    In a round hosted by @CidNight, after a flurry of pointed guesses about a post 2004 open world game set in the real world and in Asia, correctly identified _Ghost of Tsushima._

    @arauz, once again, with 15 Points!
    In a round hosted by @christoffing, knowing only the game's decade of release, the variety of play modes, it would be placed roughly in the "Sports" section of the library if it was a book, and that the game was **_SIMPLICITY,_** they correctly identified _Kirby's Air Ride!_

    @kory , with a staggering 19 Points!
    In a round hosted by @christoffing, knowing that the game was released in the 90s, that it was on PCs and consoles (itself a bit of a red herring), it may bring to mind Genghis Khan, and it was **_REGAL,_** they correctly identified Age of Empires II: Age of Kings!

    @arauz and @CidNight with 17 Points!
    In a round hosted by @bloomingbridges , knowing that the game was released in 2004, was not a platformer, had an interesting choice for its jump button with R1, and had something to do with **STARS**⭐️, @arauz first and then shortly after @CidNight identified _Katamari Damacy,_ with a masterful assist by @CidNight on the jump button question.

    @billy with 18 Points!
    In a round hosted by @christoffing , knowing that it was a 2000s Portable game, had "**The _madcap_ laughs**" as an explicitly half unhelpful, half even more unhelpful hint, by learning it was a DS game later ported to PSP and smartphones, they correctly identified _Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars._

    @beets with 15 Points!
    In an **ORANGE** round hosted by @bloomingbridges, knowing this game had orange on the boxart, was on a Sony console but not exclusively, was by a western developer, had melee and long range combat, had a vague relationship to Space Oddity by David Bowie, had a surprising Japanese HUDSON published release, and had no swords or sword-like weapons at all, they correctly identified the 1998 licenced videogame for _The Fifth Element!_

    @latescapegoat with 16 Points!
    In a round hosted by @Creekgrin , knowing it was not a rhythm game, not released on PC, that it had red prominently on the box art, and that a word in its title had something to do with directions, @latescapegoat identified _Cardinal SYN._

    I'll start...

    **Two games for the price of one.**

    So can I guess and ask questions in the same post?

    If so, then my guess is: Ys Book I & II

    If that guess is wrong, then my three questions are:

    Is it a rerelease/remake of two games on a single cartridge/disk?

    Is it an RPG?

    Is it two different play styles combined together into a single game?

    is it the recently released game ‘‘the medium?’

    >

    Yes!

    16 Questions remain.

    @Gaagaagiins#16481 Is it a 2d game?

    Does it have a multiplayer component?

    Did it officially come out on a portable platform?

    Was it originally released before January 1st, 1995?
    Is the game part of a series?

    11 Questions remain!

    Asking about the rules: Can the host only answer yes or no questions? Or could I ask something like what console was the game released on?

    >

    @beets#16537 Can the host only answer yes or no questions?

    Yes.

    10 Questions Remain!

    ...

    ...

    ...

    Just kidding.

    >

    @beets#16537 Or could I ask something like what console was the game released on?

    I haven't decided what is most fun, yet. So, I dunno, let's try with more than just yes or no questions, so long as the answer doesn't take more than a sentence to answer.

    Nintendo 64!

    9 Questions Remain.

    ...

    Just kidding, 10 Questions remain.

    Is it a racing game?

    Is it the first in its series?

    >

    @Kez#16747 Is it the first in its series?

    No.

    8 Questions Remain.

    Does the game have the word “and” in the title?

    >

    @saddleblasters#16791 Does the game have the word “and” in the title?

    It does not, but because I find this question so specific and compelling, I'll count this as a **~* Bonus * Freebie *~** ! One of the perks of making up the rules as I go along.

    8 Questions Remain.

    Is this game commonly known to the non-game-obsessive NA/EU audience?

    ok, new strategy: does the game‘s title occur alphabetically before "Milo’s Astro Lanes"?
