What's that game? (Genuinely curious mode)

We've got a couple of threads making a game of identifying… well, games. However, I figure sometimes we actually need a hand identifying an unknown game, so here we are.

For my part, my coworker shared this photo from their youth, & we're trying to figure out what they're playing. I joked that it's msn messenger & the orb, but honestly I feel like I should know this one... a Baldur's Gate or a Diablo or something equally obvious that's just escaping us at the moment. Any ideas?

I assume the game is in a window? Or does it feature the MSN messenger looking thing?

Could it be Space Hulk? I can't find a screenshot that looks like that but that's the first thing that jumped to mind.

I was thinking either a starting menu of some kind (in which case, I'm totally clueless) or an interactive fiction client for something like King of Dragon Pass. Not that I think this is King of Dragon Pass specifically; I just brought it up to give everybody an idea.

@nickfourtimes Hmm sorry but how do you know that’s a game? Looks more like a scan of an audio CD back cover with the track list on the side.

@Chopemon

space hulk definitely feels similar, i can see the resemblance!

not exactly the same thing but… yeah it's either some kinda tech-thing with a tech-mask or a demon-thing with a tech-mask.

and indeed, @chazumaru, i can‘t be sure this wasn’t a browser game, or looking up something in the browser while chatting on MSN, looking at a screenshot of a title menu or an OST or… any number of options!

kind of looks like one of those diegetic menus/scenes when you're on base in Independence War or a wing commander

well somewhere in my searching i found this, & honestly at 1.45MB this is a steal.

@nickfourtimes Shin Megami Tensei (1992).

@nickfourtimes Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game (1998) Fallout 2?

it kind of looks like an end credits scroll

the nuclear option if no one here can help is to go to r/tipofmyjoystick

@treefroggy This game is First Queen: Ornic Senki, and

@treefroggy this game appears to be a Zelda fangame called Lost Isle!

@Funbil or reverse image search, haha

Might as well use this opportunity to see if anybody knows about this game I brought up last year.

hmm, that's not a lot to go on. do you know if it was released in the west?

While the intro was probably in English (maybe with Japanese subtitles?), I don't think it was released outside Japan.

Hmmm far future + FMV would have me think of DeathMask maybe? The other details don’t really match, though.

There was this Neo Geo (cd?) pong like game i used to play emulated at my neighboor’s house.

All the characters were anime-ish/cartoon-ish (can’t remember for sure) with special powers that transformed the ball. Iirc, characters were only able to move vertically like pong.
