What's that (obscure!) game!?

Chaucer was not involved, no. “Ragnall” might or might not have been inspired by “Ragnell,” which was the loathly lady involved in “The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell,” which itself is very close to Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Tale. But there is no direct relation I’m aware of.

is this a Commodore 64 game? I don’t recognize it, but the color palette is tingling

Yes. Commodore 64.

dang, c64 is a weak spot in my video game knowledge. I don’t think I’m going to have much insight into this.

Is it…?

OK, good. It is not a Silver Sisterhood game. That would be too weird a direction, even for this thread.

I’m learning a lot today! No, not Silver Sisterhood, and I probably wouldn’t ever pick one of their games.

well, I figured out what game it is. however, I need a ruling on my (embarrassing) approach being viable:

is okay to doom scroll a twitter hashtag and get lucky?

Yes! Knowing is knowing, especially in the obscure thread. Many answers here have come from image searching and mobygames scrolling.

okay! this was a super fun scavenger hunt. using the #c64 tag on twitter, I found a post regarding Briley Witch Chronicles 2 which seemed to share at least an asset with the hint above. checking itch.io for the game, it seems it’s actually the first Briley Witch Chronicles, which is my guess.

Very nice! Yes, it’s the first Briley Witch Chronicles, a game developed in 2021 for the Commodore 64 by Sarah Jane Avory with Paolo Rathjen. She’s done a few different C64 projects, including a shmup called Zeta Wing.

I find Briley Witch Chronicles fascinating. It takes obvious cues from JRPGs to do what I don’t recall ever seeing in the C64 era, like all the dialogue and character portraits, a day/night cycle, or an in-game hint system. It certainly has a more developed story than I would have expected at the time. Also, the entire aesthetic - visual and musical - hits the very top of what I would have expected in the era. To me, it’s an excellent illustration of what a committed retro game can do.

I loved reading about this game.

I’ve got two games in mind for my post. It’s unclear if they are obscure or not, but I’ll post this evening when I can generate some screenshots and downselect.

Perhaps obscure, perhaps not. I think there are enough context clues, especially when I remove the blue boxes that folks should be able to track this down quick.

I had intended to generate this image with period appropriate hardware, but had to cheat a bit for emergent technical reasons.

is it The Republica Times?

WAIT! I change my guess to Signalis!

Neither, unfortunately.

Quadrilateral Cowboy.

Am I allowed to guess again?

My understanding is yes, as long as I tell you you’re wrong before the next guess, which is again the case here.

These are super fun guesses!

Does this game have graphics?

I wrestled with answering that question with words, so I’m responding with a minor zoom out and one blue box reduction:
