I think the only game still bearing this torch is Smash Bros, by way of encouraging as much nonsense happening as possible. You can still gain an advantage by skill, but items and hazards and general chaos are the great equalizers. The last true Goofin Around Fighting Game.

I think that UFO 50 represents a sort of nadir of the way a lot of folks who are online engage with games—especially retro games—nowadays and that having an ODE or Mister with every game ever made on it only encourages playing the first seven minutes

Playing a game like you paid for it and don’t have literally every other game as an option to distract you from it would enhance people’s engagement with the hobby in a way healthier way

handheld gaming is superior to pc/console/switch gaming. I will take a million Vita and DS games before a PS4 game. also the switch and steamdeck are not real handheld portable devices.

I agree with all this (and conclude that basically just not playing online is the way to go), but I also want to say that I was being very literal with the party analogy. I do mean putting a setup in the corner of a room as people are milling about otherwise at like a Halloween party or some such. This is probably an unusual way to present a fighting game, but I think there’s potential there!

Shame that playing them online is basically only for hardcore folks though.

on a real note Towerfall is also this perfect party fighting game. I wish that game maintained popularity. Probably the best multiplayer game. period…

Every fighting game can be this if you have the right people around. It’s the people playing the game who decide HOW the game is going to be played. If you have people around who are going to be competitive and try to be the best, then they are going to do that and you might not have fun with them.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played fighting games with my couple of friends who enjoy them and we’ve done some of the stupidest things because we are there to have fun. MvC2? I’m going triple Dan and it’s going to be bonkers. Maybe I’ll do Servbot, Zangeif, and Sakura. Who knows?

We also would boot up Third Strike and goof around nothing serious. One New Year’s Eve we did 75 matches of Third Strike and a large percentage of those were Hugo vs. Hugo because of how crazy it was.

Multiplayer game experiences can be shaped so wildly depending on the group involved. If your group is a way that isn’t making the games fun, then maybe find a different group who will make them fun. (This isn’t saying ABANDON one group, but maybe don’t do certain games with certain groups.)

I think it’s a combo of things-- part of it is definitely newer games targeting incredibly serious hardcore fans, but it’s also I’m pretty certain the perceived and observed hardcore nature of fighting games pushing people with less dedication to the cause out of the community. I used to play in person against other very casual players, and then I played briefly online with a handful of friends, but very quickly I ran into friends who reassured me that they were completely casual players, only to eat my lunch over the course of a dozen shutout matches. I don’t think I was ever a terrible player exactly, it just stopped being fun to play matches where I had literally zero chance of winning (I’m also not friends with these folks anymore).

A bunch of years back a friend of mine tried to make some online resources to help new players get acclimated to fighting games, and I think he had some success by making extremely basic explainers and such. And I think it’s great that games have such robust tutorials these days, but they kinda have to, because between the hand eye coordination fighting games require, the terminology around them is honestly pretty alienating, and that not taking into account games with extremely specific terminology (I’m thinking of Guilty Gear, with guard, instant block, faultless defence, and blitz shield… I had to look these up for the example, and just… Guilty Gear, wtf?) which you don’t exactly have to know the difference between to play, but that I promise every single person you play against online will know.

I think the writing was on the wall for this years ago though when specific characters started to get perceived as dominant, and matches got boring because they ended up being nothing but that character versus that character, over and over and over.

Anyway, I didn’t plan on getting fired up about this, just to make my point! It’s not a complaint, it’s my opinion, so please nobody try and convince me how accessible you think fighting games are today! Its okay! I’ve got plenty of other stuff to play!

I think you may be forgetting how busted up the car gets in Daytona. We’re probably in this whole mess because of it!

I think the sorts of games I enjoy most uncritically are competitive multiplayer games and games that are obtuse or difficult to play, especially arcade games. I don’t identify as a hardcore gamer or anything lmao, I just think games you have to learn to play (including board games, sokoban, strategy games, roguelikes) are really cool.

I love adventure games and RPGs and survival-horror too, but there I need some convincing. Time-to-emotional-investment is much lower with something I can pick up and just fuck around in, like a super technical fighting game. I love figuring out what buttons do, which moves combo into whatever, with zero expectations. It’s like learning to ride a bike in an empty parking lot.

I suppose this isn’t what most are thinking when making the claim, but it reminds me that I miss the original Nintendo DS d-pad. I like that it has a… ā€˜short action’ (?) and importantly that it is large enough for my adult thumb. The DSi’s d-pad feels responsive but is a little small. If the screen hinge on my original DS hadn’t broken (while it was sitting cushioned in a bag!) I would still use it sometimes.

Before I embarked on the FFXIII replay I had wanted to play Lightning Returns for a few years, so it will be funny if by the end of the original LR ends up being more of a disappointment following my new appreciation for the original. Time travel(?), all the previous characters returning in name but with different personalities and playing different roles, dress spheres… seems pretty cool.

FFXIII-2 never really appealed to me, although I don’t know how to explain why as I only played a demo once back when it came out. Replacing Lightning with that Jason Marsden–voiced guy was something of a wet blanket on things, and the monster taming aspect was plainly less appealing than the paradigms of the previous game.

I see this problem as cultural more than anything, although maybe someone really inspired can make a game that will reintroduce one-on-one fighting in a way that is somehow both not intimidating to casual players and which also doesn’t immediately become swallowed up/dominated by the FGC. If it’s possible for both audiences to enjoy Smash Bros. I have to think it would be possible for another game. Maybe it already exists! We recently tried to get some more casual matches going here and I’m not sure if we started a new thread for it, but I can’t find it if we did.

We need you in this thread.
