Ep. 361 - Specdracular 2024, with merritt k

Right, I mentioned RE2remake above as a good example of the super enemy and how scary that can be, but it’s also a game where you memorize the map, memorize where enemies are and where they will likely spawn, and then you’re just sprinting between point to point, and if something comes up you blast em. First few hours of horror are great great experiences, but by hour 5 you’re too comfy and you know the systems. Becomes more like Aliensss at that point

I realised the scariest moment was not in a video game, but a game system, caused by pushing a button…

It’s become cliché to say Resident Evil 4 isn’t “really” a horror game, and I understand what someone who says this means, but it discredits the game’s success in presentating a number of contained and imo pretty scary set pieces throughout its campaign. The blind claw guys; the lake monster; Salazar’s very tall friend who hides in the ceiling; the U-3; and of course the famous regeneradores. Because extreme dread isn’t the game’s resting mood, each of these moments stand out and work well; there’s enough time and other action that goes on between them that by the time you get comfortable, it introduces a new situation to upset the balance. Even if none of them lasts very long or fundamentally changes how you play the game, they produce a cumulative effect

1: What’s the most you were ever scared by a video game?

Rented Resident Evil 4 on GameCube when it first came out and got to the part in the hedge maze when a dog rushed out and attacked me.

I screamed and threw the controller at the TV. :joy:

We got a winner. That was the truest fear right there.

standing applause EXACTLY!! There comes a point where you aren’t immersed anymore, you just want to be done. It doesn’t help that the xenomorph is pretty random, so you can’t really “plan” stealth sequences all that well.

Those things are absolutely some of the scariest enemies in all of gaming. The spiky ones (iron maidens, I think?) make my blood run cold

Saw the first (to my knowledge) IC YouTube short just now.

Great work @esper - was a perfect snippet of the show!

The PS1, Saturn, and PS2 all had the ‘will this or won’t this boot’ fears as well.

Heck, NES too!

But yeah 360 just obliterated all hope with that red ring. There shall be no games today.

man i get this in theory but Mr X never stopped being scary for me haha. it’s been slightly easier this time through while playing along with a video walkthrough but in a normal game i can’t imagine getting used to him

I have the opposite problem- have a legitimately earned black belt but feel weird about wearing it as part of a costume.

But yes I did make a Ryu costume by defacing an old Karate Gi. I used a random strip of black fabric for the belt.

I think my earliest memory of being scared by a game was Sonic gasping for air as he sank to his watery grave…

I agree. While Resident Evil 4 is more action oriented I don’t think it makes much sense to discredit the horror elements present in that game.

I played some RE4 last night.

It’s a horror game. If you say otherwise you’re a silly billy

it turns into an action movie but that first section is sort of famously intense and frightening or have people forgotten this?

You went through a difficult process that took years of training and countless hours of work. Wearing it as a Halloween costume should feel weird and disrespectful.

It doesn’t make sense but if someone had asked me what color belt Ryu had I would have guessed red

It’s OK we’re all more used to looking at the belt he wears on his head

What would be an appropriate venue, if there is one, to mention people you would love to hear on the program? I was looking to see if there was a specific thread for that but did not see any.

This is a timeless one, the music alone without context is anxiety inducing enough.

Haven’t been hanging around here much, for a couple of reasons (name over the last few years I discovered I was ‘addicted’ to video games that that overemphasis on them in my life was hurting my ability to reach for others goals I had personally and professionally). But I found this show is still a fun listen, though I’ve been sporadic and only tuned in for the drama.

That said I wish the show and the hosts well, and I have a feeling like maybe the show can be something more special now that Tim has left. There was something about Tim’s presence, recently, that felt a little like a wet blanket over the experience. I revere Tim’s incredible knowledge of video games but for a personality like mine who kinda struggles to fit them into my life in a way that feels good, it’s no fun listening to someone who is eternally a “know-it-all”
and who makes you feel like your opinions or experiences with a thing don’t matter if you haven’t experiences all the other related things. That’s the impression I kept getting of him as time went on and I look forward to seeing where things can go without that kind of maximalist take-gatekeeper figure hanging over everything.
