This year it’s paid registration, so it’s much more likely that would be closer to the actual amount of people attending (previous years were free registration, so a lot more ppl would just sign up and then not show up).
If last year is any indication, Evo JP also cannot grasp how insane it is to run a very large open bracket (their bracket ops were extremely bad).

comboing charge moves is kind of a weird one for new players to wrap their heads around since it usually involves starting the charge much earlier than you would think to do.

This one practices chaining multiple lights into a DP with Sakura. Good practice for hit confirming with rapid-fire light kicks.
Fighting game adjacent story:
Tomorrow i’ll be traveling to a brazillian fgc major (SF6, Smash Ultimate, GG Strive and more)
As usual, i always do a car checkup before road trips. i decided to replace the oil and filters, since i uber and the interstate trip would likely exhaust the mileage i have left and the heavy use of the car degrades it fast too. On the parts/oil shop they do the service too. I parked my car, got the stuff and went back . The service floor is a few stores down the building. My car DID NOT start.
The mechanics checked and my battery just died. Now i was in a pickle because my money is super tight. The money i had was for eating during the trip, so i would need to uber during the
tournament off hours to eat and gas to get back home.
I told my friends, some of which are TOs and/or players and they jumped in to fund my car repair. In less than 20 minutes i got the money with everybody’s support. They said
“no way we would have you travel interstate to hang out with us and lose your company bc you’re in a pickle. Just fix the damn car and come!”
FGC forever!
That’s awesome. I’m happy that it worked out.
Now be sure that you do not cave to any pressure to throw matches because they were kind to you. Wipe the floor with them!
i’m the 0-2 Master! i only beat newcomers lol
i mostly enjoy watching high level stuff
Aside from smash, i registered for the mistery game bracket. The games are random depending of which station you’re assigned to.
My round 1 was this gem that i never heard of
Toy Fighter
I’ll edit this post with each new game i play
Edit: the next round a played a 2d basket one, didn’t catch the name. That was the end of my run!
Running a melee local today.
It’s amazing that some players here play this game for 23 years now and there’s newcomers too!
Went 0-2 as usual, solo Marth! Having a great time watching as the bracket rolls on
third strike is live at evo
I just watched a bit of it while eating lunch. It’s super fun! Also the current skill level I’ve been seeing is “high” but not “superhuman” so the games still look like a match I might plausibly play in. Except nobody is taking Oro on stream yet, so maybe not!
Looking forward to watching a bunch more this weekend when the opportunity presents. Hopefully our Insert Credit representatives do a great job in their pools!
Just bought and played a bit of the surprise release, SNK Vs Capcom.
I have barely played SNK fighters, but whenever I do, I’m always blown away by how effortlessly cool they are. Incredible art and the palette in this one feels very refined. I really like the SNK takes on Capcom characters.
Once upon a time when I was a young boy of 9 or 10, I was in love with SF2. I got an issue of the comic, which was the manga formatted for western audiences. In there was an advert for the UK company, Manga Entertainment, a company that distributed anime in the UK. I distinctly remember one of the titles in the ad being 3x3 Eyes. I was a sheltered kid and I remember being shocked at the content and style of anime. It looked incredibly cool and seemed dangerous. It was intoxicating to look at. It seemed illicit. I get a similar feeling when I look at SVC Chaos.
It looks edgy and mature. The backgrounds are bleak and vaguely horrifying in their desolation. The normally bright Capcom characters have a darker palette. The proportions of characters I love are different. SNK character designs are wilder and there is a short Freddy Krueger dude. Mai strips out of a kimono on the character select screen.
I only played a few rounds and I’m really looking forward to playing more. You can play as the Metal Slug alien!
Finished watching this year’s Evo, and definitely did not expect to shed a tear at the end. Very moving.
And also shoutout to Hayao for being the most entertaining player ever haha, what a guy!
I’m not good at fighting games, but I love em and can’t get enough of Street Fighter anything, so I always enjoy tuning into Evo. It was cool still having a Third Strike tourney to watch, as it’s my favorite fighting game of them all. But I must admit it’s showing its age now when compared to the pace/intensity of SF6 matches. SF6 will never look as pretty as Third Strike due to my 2D bias, but it’s a blast to watch and play for sure.
What Third Strike has at the highest level is simply a lack of money. I absolutely love watching 40 year old guys who play at the arcade after their other jobs. I’m setting myself up to be wrong here but I’m fairly confident there isn’t a single full time Street Fighter 3 pro. Part of what made this year so moving for me was seeing one of those old masters win on his first chance in 15 years.
I was also so happy to see Punk win. Big fan of him and check in on his streams every now and then.SF6 was a really nice tournament.
I’m also not 100% sure, but I feel like there are def people who are mainly grinding 3s for tournaments. Maybe not pros at the scale of sf6 or tekken.
What I really appreciate is seeing so many younger players now, myself included, playing and learning the game. Not sure if anyone here watched or was at combo breaker this year but I feel like top 8 for 3s were all newer faces in the grand scheme of things.
Yee Evo was great. I had only gone once before in like 2013 or 2014, and sheesh it’s grown. That wing of the convention center couldn’t hold the amount of people. We were able to get in to the arena for Tekken and Street Fighter. It was logistically a mess but the energy was super hype. Got to shake hands with my fav player. Also got to talk to Punk and my partner told him he was gonna win it all day 2 of the event. I couldn’t get the days off to join the tournaments myself. I’ll be planning ahead next year for sure.
On 3s, there are younger players like Resolve and Bubbles that grind it out as their main game. They both made deep runs. It was great to see a varied top 6 with Hugo and Elena making strong showings. Long live 3s, happy 25th bday
