Should I finally play Metal Gear Solid after I finish Half-Life 2?

Yes.

Becoming increasingly aware of the encroaching end of the year I realized that I never got around to giving Animal Well a spin.

I managed to stay basically as unspoiled as I could possibly be. Some of the whispers on these forums made me feel like it might be for me but I have a question regarding the nature of its mysteries and puzzles.

Does it have a story? Or do its mysteries unfold on more of a mechanical/gameplay level? If it’s the latter I probably don’t really care right now, even if it’s done well. My main source of motivation for puzzle solving is usually a narrative reward and less the pure joy of having solved the puzzle.

I would say yeah stay away for now because there is not much there in terms of story. I still loved it because I can just make one up in my head and there is enough going on visually to make that easy, but you have to be in the right mindset for that. I think Void Stranger had much more in terms of what you’re looking for but I’m sure you’ve already had a great time with that one

I just finished Animal Well yesterday actually and despite the lack of story I couldn’t help but feel proud of the little guy when you explode the fireworks at the end

Exactly what I needed to know. I would’ve hoped for a Void Stranger experience and probably would’ve been disappointed. Thanks!

I saw that Caves of Qud is out of early access and is supposed to have pretty good controls for Steam Deck? Anyway I’ve had so many friends over the years suggest it but I’m honestly concerned it’ll be too fiddly for me. Still, I’m thinking of giving it a try over the next few weeks while I’m on vacation!

Qud is probably the least fiddly full strength traditional roguelike I’ve played

Just picked it up today on the deck coincidentally. I’ll let you know!

I look forward to hearing what you think!

I’m also thinking of giving the demo for Ys X (I almost typed ‘Ys Xs demo’) one more try at some point this coming week. I have always really enjoyed Ys games, basically all of them up to and including Ys VIII, but Monstrum Nox for whatever reason really put me off, and I haven’t been able to get Nordics to click for me so far. I’m not exactly sure what it is that made it feel not so fun though! I think it’s got something to do with the combat, which I haven’t really felt the game does a good job of bringing me up to speed on-- there are a lot of mechanics that seem as though they are either lightly explained or not explained at all. I’m prone these days with the ole ADHD to space out on explanations of things, but I’ve tried the demo three times so far and it hasn’t gotten any better.

I don’t know though, maybe I’m done with Ys as a series if this doesn’t work out? I hope not! Am I the only one here who feels this way?

You’re not alone, I struggled to get into Ys X for like 5-6 hours, then grew tired of the gameplay loop at about 15 hours in so I put it down. They do definitely have a lot of mechanics to keep track of, but if the issue is within the fight, I think the most important thing is the revenge gauge. For bosses especially, you need to learn how to block at the right time to get that gauge up, and then you’ll get a button prompt to use it for a big attack. Other than that, I guess just spamming the duo attacks and regularly switching between characters so the other can gradually heal got me through most stuff.

Also sprint dodging around the battlefield (holding L I think) when you’re not attacking is usually a good idea since it auto-dodges some projectiles.

I was really hot on it for a while but I also kinda drifted away from it after about 20 hours.

I’m glad it’s not just a problem I had, but it also encourages me to definitely give it that last shot to see if I can vibe with it better! I’m ok with lots of mechanics, but I usually expect a game like this to drip feed those mechanics, and it felt like Nordics was giving me like a dozen things in one text box. I feel as though Falcom more often errs in the direction of giving you 90 hours of cut scenes before anything happens of consequence.

Most of the time my problem with games like this is that I love the demo and play through it several times before I pull the trigger and buy the game.

I’ll try and pay more attention to this in my final attempt.

This Indiana Jones sounds pretty alright, but I’m not really in the mood for Indiana Jones. I do like how chill it sounds and I do like the idea of messing up fascists right now, so I’m thinking about looking at those Wolfensteins on Game Pass sometime soon

Okay, so, RE: my Ys X problems-- I guess the fourth time’s the charm for me and Ys X? I gave the demo another go last night and tried to be patient with it, and I admit-- it clicked a lot more this time! I’m still not 100% sold but I didn’t have nearly the problems I did last time with combat, so I guess I’ll finish the demo at least?

After finishing up Before the Green Moon I have space for a nighttime Switch game. I did fire up Luigi’s Mansion 3 but…

I do own Deadly Premonition 2 and I’ve only heard terrible things about it on non-Insert Credit internet places so I’m curious about people’s thoughts.

I played Luigi Mangione 3 earlier this year and it was alright. I don’t understand what people love about these games, because I’ve played 2 and 3 and they were both nothing special.

I haven’t played DP2 so I can’t comment on it, but it’s probably at least more interesting than LM3.

I would imagine most of the love for the series is stemming from the first game. The sequels feel kind of soulless and too big for their own good in my opinion.

Anyway, I want to play 1000xResist so bad! But in my attempts, the text size is so dang small!!! My poor little eyes can’t read anything on the screen :(
