Games you're thinking about playing

@“mtvcribs”#p137119 I played (and beat) LoZ for the first time as an adult last year (never beat it as a kid, or played that much really). It rules! Close to the best one, I think. I kinda like cryptic stuff in games, as long as the mood is right and it's not too mean about it. Sometimes LoZ can get too mean about it, like how over half the secrets found in the over world are actually a punishment… but all the in-dungeon stuff is great, I thought.

@“RubySunrise”#p137124 I played Castlevania II myself not too long ago. It‘s fun! The game feels and looks really good, and the soundtrack is awesome. You kinda need a guide or at least some hints though, some of the things you need to do to progress at points are totally insane. I can’t imagine anyone beat this game without using Nintendo Power or whatever back in the day.

Alternatively you could play a retranslation hack, so the NPCs actually give somewhat meaningful hints.

Thinking about playing that Star Ocean: Second Story Remake demo. Also thinking about just playing more SO:2ndS.

I am thinking of playing Fire Emblem if… 暗夜王国 again because I had a good time this year with Fire Emblem if… 白夜王国 and want to beat it before I play Fire Emblem if… インビジブル・キングダム

Thirding the support for Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. That is a cool game. An interesting new direction after the first one.

@“Kez”#p137132 I will definitely use a guide as soon as I feel like I need one. The idea of fake hints and lying villagers is part of what intrigues me, though. I wonder what it'll be like going in knowing everybody lies?

@“antillese”#p137133 I'm going to grab a copy and, more importantly, mentally prepare myself to actually sit down and play it.

All you need to play Zelda 1 is a pencil and paper. If that leaves anyone with questions, I think we should all get comfortable asking for advice on the playground

So the fan translation for Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 is out.

I downloaded it as soon as I found out and installed on my ps2‘s hard drive.

I pressed start and watched some of the opening cutscene, and then a cozy, somber song starts and I just couldn’t do it.

I felt like i was about to cry I was so excited.

I‘ve been wanting to play these games properly ever since I played Attack of the Friday Monsters.

I had to stop mostly because I knew if I went further I’d probably abandon Steambot Chronicles, and that‘s unacceptable.

So I think it’s safe to assume I'll be thinking about playing Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 for the foreseeable future.

i love thinking about playing games, particularly the dragon quest games. i enjoy thinking about them more than playing them.

i think a lot about checking out suda51's stuff

I haven’t really been playing much stuff lately, feel too low energy in a way, distractible, things “I should be doing” taking precedence mentally while I burn idle hours just on my phone or something. Seldom post on the forums because I don’t feel like I play anything in the main relevant discourse, and make myself want to really own the things I have to say and speak after thoroughly playing. Thinking about games is maybe what I like to do most. Recently I’m thinking a lot about things that I will never fully ingest:

  • - Heroes of might and magic 2 on gbc. I have had no idea about this series but seeing this video of it on gbc just looks dope as heck. It’s like a mini civilization map feel, unit development, random drops, plus pretty alright tactical battles and mysterious spells. There’s some obscene number of stages too. I don’t have it and it didn’t release in Japan so it’s squarely in my imagination. Thinking about getting into the PC versions too, wishlisted 2/3 on gog, maybe they’ll go on sale sometime.
  • - Gameboy Wars 3. I just continually remember that this is a gbc game with as much stages as an advance wars, an initiative system that gives initiative based on distance traveled before attacking, an experience system with units leveling up across stages, a campaign with branching paths, and a map editor. There is no way for it to be fully experienced, it seems like. Awe-inspiring for me.
  • - Ganbare Morikawa-kun #2 ([vid](https://youtu.be/CsE7NYbUMFI?si=Lg7JMeG6VA5jMgh5)) This is a wild experiment in AI where you gradually train a little bot how to interact with different world objects (push blocks, flip switches, pick up items) and it gradually becomes more and more able to handle different situations. Can operate in a “give feedback for each action” mode or a “free wheel” mode where the bot just does whatever it wants/is able to. The world is very very big and I played maybe two hours so far. There’s another game [ここ掘れ!プッカ](https://youtu.be/9YPVx0LWgbY?si=l_r7BMac0kST7wJf) which looks like a similar core to it but with a maybe less rigidly puzzle flavored world (haven’t tried it yet). These games give me the strong feeling of interacting with something independent of me, watching bugs crawl on the ground. Just thinking about it gives me the feeling so I haven’t felt too bad about not playing.
  • - Carnage Heart and any of the sequels. (which seem like friggin Armored Core B-Spec) On this tip as a result of thinking about AI. I previously looked at this series as “oh you hafta do hella programming stuff on a robot using some grid system ugh that’s probably brutal” but now realize that you can [pretty easily](https://www.youtube.com/live/HYylu7CCbkY?si=dOR5WZydElVZzpmc) do some basic targeting and shooting logic, and I also realized that you could have three different robots in a single unit. My mind is going wild just imagining what the upper limits of clever program designs could be. Bought Carnage Heart EZ on ps3 psn, launched it, but didn’t have the energy to get really going yet. Knowing how much game there is in each (scenarios, unlockable and upgradable parts) just makes me feel pretty good. Plus the psp english release also looks like a very heavyweight [visual novel](https://youtu.be/yBOgLzKY2lc?si=kue0zKV58-GXJa2q) with tons of voice acting on top of the most advanced version of the core mechanic that had been developed over five games prior? Bonkers. God bless Artdink. I’m arguing with myself over whether I should do the hassle of charging my psn wallet to allow me to buy it off the vita store and also whether I should waste 30 bucks on it.
  • Plus a bunch more stuff, I will maybe write more here later. Games are good, and I like thinking about em.

@“riley”#p139189 FSR is such a hoot!!

Was just thinking about playing Solaroboto Solatorobo: Red the Hunter because: I love a good DS game, I quite like action RPGs, and I have to check in on furry media every once in a while—as a furry ally.

@“connrrr”#p139248 I played Solatorobo earlier this year! It‘s pretty good and it has a great fishing minigame where instead of fish it’s giant snails with battleships on their backs.

    Deus Ex (replay)

    EYE: Divine Cybermancy

    Thief II: The Metal Age

    Dishonored

    Baldur's Gate II

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic

    Arx Fatalis

    Morrowind

    STALKER: Clear Sky

    System Shock

    Ultima Underworld

Looking Glass et al. (with a few exceptions) is the throughline here. Not sure if this is going down a research path or if I'm just enjoying my time/learning. I've always had a hard time with sitting down to play stuff I know I'm going to like. Dishonored is a good example; I've played about 75% three times now since release and I've just never committed to finishing it. Similar situation with Human Revolution and Prey haha.

Morrowind is pretty low on the list since I'll get stuck playing it for however long my constitution will last. Same with Clear Sky to an extent.

Now that it's Fall I'm in my prime emotional availability for liking games/letting them imprint something on me so I'm stoked to see what does the trick. It's been a couple years now since Death Stranding and FF7:RM reminded me that I _do_ like video games, so hopefully I can get that invested again with some of these.

I might play a bunch of rpgmaker games. Sometimes I tell myself that I‘m doing things like this for some kind of project but I ain’t got no dang project for this.

    Just a weird urge.

Also, I picked up Doom 1-3 and Quake 1 and 2 so I'll probably play those for a while, maybe, a little bit.

@“edward”#p139309 I am constantly playing some form of Doom or Quake.

I‘ve been leaning toward playing some Valis, after seeing that the Switch versions of collections 1 and 2 are on sale at the moment, but I think it’s super unlikely that I'll play them on Switch, in those slapdash, fan-milking collections, given I should have access to most of them via emulation.

There was a time when I was super into Valis (mostly on Genesis) but part of me also wonders how clunky they'll feel after 25 years of playing games that handled controlling the player in a much more modern way!

i was thinking of playing Hi-Fi Rush before the year‘s end, and i finally started so i guess that doesn’t count much.

there are other 2023 games on my machine that i'm still thinking of playing tho: Venba, Norco, and Jusant
