@“skelly”#p143407 venba's real good and real short
Oh, I‘ve also been thinking about how much trouble it would be to try and get Void Stranger running on my Mac via one of the various ’run Windows stuff on Mac‘ methods, but I’ve also got the sneaking suspicion that as soon as I buy it and get it working a Switch or PS5 version will get announced. At this point I've heard enough folks gush about it that I kinda have to try it someday!
At least once a year I think about playing Metal Gear Acid and then I don't. (Now is that time of year)
@“Karasu”#p143442 I’m in the same boat lol
@“Karasu”#p143442 it's not hard! i got it running with CrossOver without much issue, only problem being now the free trial is over but my Void journey is not.
Thinking thru the games I would like to play next year. I use HowLongToBeat to track my yearly goals. Completed 12 games so far in 2023 and likely get that to 15 by the 31st which is a lot for me! My 2024 list is hovering around 40 games at the moment, I like to have them a bit long so there's always something I'm excited for in a variety of genres and lengths but would like to pair it down some before the year starts. I try and pick a mini theme or series to get deep into. Last year was SNES RPGs focusing on Final Fantasy, this year was a bit of a nebulous "Soulsborne 101" with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1. 2024 I'm hoping to get some exposure to Dragon Quest (1-3 SNES ports) and the Mario RPGs since there's the fresh remakes out/coming for those and Paper Mario on NSO.
TLDR there are too many games and it's great.

It’s good to know! I knew there were options but most of them are like ‘most windows apps work’ in a very noncommittal way. Now that I know Crossover works I’ll do it!
Can someone please convince me to play (or not play) World of Horror?
@“Mnemogenic”#p143514 me @ peace walker, would to know more of the backstory to mgs5 which I just kinda rolled thru the chico and paz stuff on
@“Mnemogenic”#p143514 Ya gotta play metal gear acid.
How do you feel about card-based combat? Cause it‘s there and it’s cool.
One of my first psp games!
@“phylaxis”#p145498 peace walker is great, has a top 3 MGS moment for me at the end. for the curious: >!the heavens divide part!<
Please give me your opinions on why I should start “Tactics Ogre: Reborn”.
@“jxzo”#p145531 me and @captain have been playing it (he‘s been playing the psp version). the combat is deep, the music meets the moment, and the dialogue is a treat to read. it’s a self-assured, intricate machine. i tried to make my point without saying “it has great vibes,” which is true.
@“jxzo”#p145531 What impression have you been given? Are you hesitant to give it a shot? Only you can say why you should start it, but as far as why you might want to,

My SRPG background is in old Fire Emblems, and Tactics Ogre has felt like exercising completely different muscles, and a nice challenge to wrap my brain around. I cannot comment on the mechanics of Reborn much, but it looks to be as or more involved than the PSP version.
@"MoH"#1454 I'm a little disappointed in what we've seen of the narrative so far (28h playtime) after hearing it talked up on this forum, but still interested to see where it goes. The dialogue has some of the same texture as FFXII and FF Tactics War of the Lions, so be warned if you find those irritating (I do but am enjoying the story in spite of it)
@“bwood”#p145488 I've been playing it recently. I took a while to click but now all I want to do is investigate elder gods in a Japanese town.
The game could do a little bit of a better of of explaining itself when you first launch it so:
it is a card game. This means you get random events generated that don't make narrative sense. Focus less on the story and more on the holistic, meta part of the game
combat is very poor at giving feedback. The damage given and received is at the bottom of the screen, watch the text log. In some battles there are unique, narrative actions squirreled away on a combat menu two tabs across. Some enemies need to be defeated by performing a clapping and bowling ritual. To work out how to complete the ritual, use this: https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/792009913408924653/FAF2F7C94E0A3D91E617221D5A5279116E08D305/
you unlock new characters, new events, new back stories and all sorts by completing runs and unlocking achievements. The game doesn't tell you this. Keep doing runs and when you start a new run, go into the custom run menu and turn stuff on and off
I know lists like that can put people off but please don't let it. The game intentionally/unintentionally obscures things and part of the delight of the game is discovery and peeling back the layers. The sometimes non-sensical narrative created by the random events can take a while to get over but I'm really glad I did.
@“captain”#p145727 yeah, i was under the impression that the narrative was main course, but now i see it just accompanies the deep strategy gameplay. it doesn‘t have very much of an on-ramp or padding to reinforce the stuff you’re supposed to care about which is cool and unusual in a certain sense, but that also means it can feel dry and sterile. the dialogue is anything BUT dry and sterile, which i think ultimately gives the game a unique flavor.
@“captain”#p145727
I struggle with starting long games. 8-10 hour experiences are easy to manage, but longer titles require more investment timewise. No other reason there.
World of Horror is on the backburner. I will play it, so thank you for the recommendation.
I just got the PC Game Pass, so the entire Yakuza series (and side games, I think) are on the table.
I've never played a Yakuza game and all I know about them is what's been said on the podcast. Which one would be best to start with?

@“MoH”#p145894 Done! Thank you!
@“bwood”#p145901 enjoy!
