let's discuss CRT TV ownership

This is the tv. Very mid but I’m ok with that. I matured my doorways and this thing has a 1/2 tolerance to make it though if turned 90 degrees on its side and put on a hand truck. Loading it sideways makes me worried that it’s going to tip and fall off even with straps because the screen side is so heavy.

Also it’s 36 inches and not 42. I’m bad at guessing sizes

I’m afraid of your television and I’m nowhere near it

It’s too big and heavy and I’m not a fan of the nonsense I get myself into

Wild how there’s just a guy with his SNES in the database photo for this tv

I love that it’s on a rusty cart. There’sa surprising number of pictures. Most tvs just have a service menu and input images if that.

I played a little on my 4k tv and was surprised that the game play wasn’t nearly as bad as I assumed it would be after reading about it. I felt the same way about Nier back in the day.

Is it bad that I saw this art installation and my first thought was "I should contact the artists to see if they are getting rid of the PVMs after they are done with the piece?

Hi all, I’ve been looking at getting a CRT for a while now and one happened to pop up near me on marketplace. It’s seems to be a JC Penny RGB monitor. Has anyone had any experience using these to play retro consoles? Pics attached are what the seller has on the listing.

So per this thread

https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagecomputing/comments/o9jfty/what_is_this_rgb_connection_more_detail_in/

and things I have seen before, that’s not RGB in the sense we think about it now, but much more attuned to EGA and CGA computer output. So if all you want is composite, it should be good for that, but actual RGB or YPBPR input would require a serious mod if it would work at all.

But the colors look decent and so does the geometry, so just don’t pay an insane “for retro gamers” price and you’re good.

Luckily its only 60 bucks which is pretty cheap all things considered. Thanks for the info I had noticed the RGB input looked a little different than I’ve seen.

It was all on YouTube the last time I rewatched it. Man, what a show.

I ended up talking myself out of getting it :pensive:, hoping to find one that is maybe a bit more flexible with inputs. My thought process is to really start looking at CRTs after I get a mister.

keep you eyes out for anything post 2000 ish. You generally get S-video for sure and Component on non combo sets. Component on even a flat glass CRT playing Mister is a joy to behold and a breeze to set up.

I got a Sony 13 inch Trinitron(KV-13FS100) yesterday. It’s pretty rad. It’s replacing the Toshiba I’ve been using, and has some nice upgrades. Stereo sound, headphone jack, component. I’m quite happy I found one that size, it’s perfect for my apartment setup.

One question. When I hook up my SNES with composite it has a black bar about an inch long at the top. I tried a few SNES games and they were all like this(the original SF II, Doom, Final Fight 2). The screen view fits fine, it’s not like the life bars in SF II are cut off. No other console does this, I’ve tried ps2, Dreamcast, and Saturn. Those games fit the full screen. Is this a thing with snes or older consoles? It doesn’t look terrible, so I’m not too concerned, and I also don’t want to go down the rabbit hole of adjusting the settings since I’m no expert. Any insight?

Here’s the tv playing Sega Rally and my cat.
