let's discuss CRT TV ownership

Resolution on some consoles plays really odd with component consumer sets. On my Toshiba’s of the same vintage and similar size. 32X always displays a purple bar at the tippy top of the screen. No other console does this. I really think it has to do with the unique output ratio of older consoles. You can probably go into the service menu and adjust things when you play SNES.

This showed up on marketplace. I of course want it but it’s too much and too far away.

This place I walked by today seems legit. Putting this here to remind myself to call and ask if they work on CRTs.

Thought I would show our fancy main CRT. It’s a Bang & Olufsen MX7000 with a 28 inch screen. It has two scart inputs at the back for RGB and composite signals, and it can display in both 50 and 60hz. This bad boy also has 4 speakers that give incredible and crispy sound. I love this chunky man so much.

The remote and service menus are a bit of a mess on these televisions, quite infamous for it. I’ve had to read so many forum posts and manuals to learn how to even work this thing and program the remote. It’s a fucked up creature to handle, but totally worth it. Best television I’ve ever owned.

Here’s a picture of Dracula in his RGB glory too. Because that is apparently mandatory these days when showing off a CRT screen. Beautiful.

Holy shit, that’s the complete package. Do you have the remote for it too, with the little screen? Also I didn’t realize B&O made televisions!

They totally did, and still do in fact. They’re luxury models though, so they’re expensive as hell. The old ones like this one you can find pretty cheap though. They’re easier to find in Nordic countries and Europe, since they were made in Denmark.

And yeah, totally have the BEO4 remote.

Cuuuute! I love the size and color of that one, built in VCR too, that’s a great find!

I finally have some decent work coming in, so I might start hunting for a CRT… @treefroggy Any recs for finding one around LA? Or would I have better luck finding one further out?

That’s a wonderful little TV!

I wish I still found street tvs because dang do I want everyone to have their own little shrine CRT. In the future I can only hope they make HD displays that will have shrine vibes.

I’ll respond a little later, for now here’s how it looks when I put together a normal household setup instead of my van life setup I’ve been living with exclusively for 6 years and posting about:

This entertainment center has a perfect pull out shelf for storing cartridges!

Well if you’re in LA I’m posting curb alerts every time I find one. I could help you. I periodically search CL and OfferUp. I usually post about it here. I’ve also put a lot of advice in this thread for finding them. I’d be happy to help and pass along any I come across. They’re still out there.

I think in NYC the volume put out is just far less than (sigh) 15 years ago. Time flies. Also any that are put out I think are snapped up right away.

Shoot I forgot to post in this thread! I did find a street digital to analog converter for a TV and once I hooked it up to my CRT (and programed my universal remote work with it) I tuned directly into the 24 hour cartoon channel.

Well yeah I’ll be the first to say it ain’t what it used to be and it’s a sad sorry state right now, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still out there fighting the good fight and keeping on top of goings on. In my neck of the woods (Venice) I also have tweakers to compete with for anything left outdoors that isn’t bolted down. But there’s so much out there that even I find Groundscores fairly regularly.

LA is still one of the better places for this. you can still sometimes find them on the curb, you can find them on craigslist searching for “old tv,” you can see if a production studio is emptying a warehouse of PVMs, etc!! just gotta keep those eyeballs open.

I recommend just searching “tv” and scrolling until you find the right one. But like I said I still do this regularly so I’ll DM you if I find any good ones!

Yeah I have had luck just searching TV in the Craigslist “free stuff” section, there isn’t much to scroll through so it’s not time consuming. If you do that regularly you’ll find good stuff but you gotta be quick bc they get snatched up.

I’m also just outside a lot riding my bike through alleys. If you have free time, postmates or Uber eats is a good gig that gets you cruising through neighborhoods every day where you’re likely to find all sorts of free stuff on the curb in LA. It’s how the majority of my epic Groundscores were found because it got me out and looking with a destination!

That’s such a nice and cozy setup. Very classic, feels just like home in a fargone era. I love it.

About availability, I am sure it’s much the same as here in Sweden, it’s all about location in the end. And that seems that go for both selling and buying. If you’re in a big city there should be good opportunities if you keep your eyes peeled. Not as many as before, but still.
