i had noticed that VHS aesthetics are having a bit of a moment right now in music videos. i am compelled to share one i made back in the day. i had two players and a camcorder all hooked up to a dollar store three-way A/V switcher, and split the output between a CRT and a shitty usb capture dongle. cut up and set to music in equally shitty editing software. behold, the most 2010-ass thing you’re likely to see this week:
These wavebirds are from their initial release in 2002.
Golly are they really all over 20 years old now. Yeesh, I don’t like the constant march of time.
I guess everything in my little game corner is long in the tooth, it’s just always worrying when I think how long I’ve kept these doodads kicking around
Someone here was saying their CRT had humidity damage, causing it to whine real bad? I think my CRT may have humidity damage, Idunno. Sometimes when I turn it on, it’s extremely dark. Quite a bummer. This is my baby (JVC TM-H1750CG), so I’ll have to do something about it.
It could also be power fluctuations from my inverter on my solar setup. I’ve been using the same stuff since 2018, after all. That’s 6 years of off grid, completely solar powered CRT gaming y’all.
This is the I/O. Anyone have recommendations on what adaptor I’ll need to plug in standard A/V audio cables? I don’t know the name of that Audio In port so I’m not sure where to start.
Thanks!
I recently purchased a Bang & Olufsen LX6000 TV. Unfortunately, during transit, the contrast screen (the glass panel in front of the CRT) became detached from its supports.
When I inspected the TV, I noticed the adhesive that originally held the contrast screen had dried out and lost its grip, likely due to age. This got me thinking about the potential risks associated with old glues in electronics, especially ones that have degraded. I’m particularly worried about whether the adhesive could release any harmful chemicals or dust, and whether I need to take special precautions while handling it.
To add to my concerns, I started reading about cadmium, which was sometimes used in older electronics. Now I’m wondering if there’s any risk of cadmium dust being present in parts of the TV, like the metal brackets or the CRT? Any advice from people with experience in vintage electronics would be greatly appreciated.
Was literally coming here to post this video. Cool video doesn’t do it justice IMO. It’s about rescuing the (possibly) last of Sony’s biggest ever CRTs from a building in Japan, days from demolition.
There’s even backstory about how it got to where it wound up. A great watch!
So I’d been toying with idea of getting a CRT for some time and had finally managed to talk myself out of it. Aside from the expense, I just don’t have the space. Besides, emulation filters are getting better and maybe scalers will come down in price at some point.
Then a couple of weeks ago I spotted a glorious Sony Trinitron sat out in front of my neighbour’s house. I knocked on the door to confirm they were definitely throwing it out. “You want that thing? Sure, help yourself!”
Some minor backache later and I have a hulking great Triniton sat in my loft, blocking the view of my weak and inferior Sony OLED until I can summon the energy to rearrange some furniture.
I guess I had better dust off some consoles to hook up to it!
It’s all a slippery slope from here! but you can also get an FPGA plugged into that fella with some modifications, which might be a good space-saving way to go!
The Panasonic 21” set is pretty much perfect since I bought it new in 2005.
The big 29” Wega has some convergence problems and the menu color has turned back for some reason and I can’t for the life of me find how to turn it back to green.
The smaller 14” Trinitron is the one I’ve showed a few posts back. I had one as a teenager and was able to find another a couple months ago.
By default I use them with:
14”: Famicom and Master System
21”: Turbo Duo, PlayStation 1 and Mega Drive/32x
29”: NeoGeo AES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 2
I talked myself into buying a Trinitron, found one on Craigslist but couldn’t pick it up because the NY marathon was in the way and blocked every path to the seller’s apt that day. Which was just enough time to talk myself out of buying one for the same reasons you mentioned.
But now you, and everyone here make it seem like I should talk myself back in…
I don’t feel like getting old consoles for it though. That’d be too much for my minimalist ways. However, I was looking into a way to get my Steam Deck connected to one. So I guess it’ll depend on that, and if I can find another Trinitron to buy.
