Music - The Topic!

I can see why people think that, and also why people see him a musical god at the same time. Tell you what though, there’s only ever going to be one David Bowie.

When am I not!?

i’m glad you liked it, tom! i agree that i’m afraid of americans is the strongest track. i believe he did a co-headlining tour with nine inch nails on that album (or circa that time). on the nights nine inch nails played first, the stadium would apparently be empty by the time bowie took the stage. definitely the nadir of his career, but i love that he kept going in that direction on his subsequent albums and didn’t retreat to a revivalism.

i don’t have anything poignant to add to the discussion of bowie as a person (for not being a fan, you sure sing his praises well ) other than i really love him. each phase of his career has something different to appreciate. even songs as popular as space oddity still manage to move me.

it’s hard for me to pick a favorite bowie song or album overall, but i’ll go with this track from low since it was those berlin albums that brought bowie from “music my dad liked” to “someone worth my while” (though i grew to really love those early rock n roll albums too):

I really did and I think maybe even more as I didn’t expect to like it! It’s cool we both found the same song on the album the strongest one. One magical thing about music is being surprised by it, because that never stops no matter your age or time in your life. Maybe if I had listened to that album a few years ago, I may not have enjoyed it as much so it turned up just at the right time!

Can imagine a tour with NIN and both being an influence on each other. Trent Reznor has always mentioned Bowie as in influence, which makes sense in evolution of style and sound - something they both have done over the years and done very well. Bowie with his constant style change and Reznor moving into scoring films. I would have put one of those shows on my list of dream gigs to attend!

Going back to why I love Bowie the man, I think this interview here explains it perfectly:

There’s a segment at around eight minutes of him talking about the internet, which 25 years ago he’s talking about exactly what we’re doing right now!!! That kind of foresight is clearly from someone who knew what he was talking about and the rest of us are catching up with him. How can you not respect someone who saw it coming and let’s be honest here, is that cool!?! You may not have seen it so enjoy it fully.

I will check out your next recommendation (Let’s be honest, the first one wasn’t really one but still counts) tomorrow for sure. I don’t want to overdose, but another thing I love about music is when someone has the passion for something they want to share and you can see it in them, even in words. You may not sell me on becoming a huge fan, but it’s not due to lack of passion or trying

that interview is SO awesome. maybe i’m too gullible, but i always found the elder bowie to be both genuine and self-aware as an artist in his interviews. the way collaborators talk about him reminds me of the way people would talk about prince in that he was locked-in, willing to experiment, but also just had the “touch” with music that few others do. perhaps bowie was a bit more humble than prince in the end.

believe it or not, i wasn’t trying to get you into bowie but you talking about the korn dubstep album reminded me of bowie’s equivalent lol. low is a masterpiece, but if it’s not your jam at the very least this conversation has me listening to it again for the first time in a few years.

more apropos to this forum, did anyone know that david bowie’s son directed the world of warcraft movie? i believe that’s what they call the good kind of nepotism.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s not just that interview but one of many I’ve seen and read that just saw him as someone who was as creative as they are intelligent. Prince is another great example, of someone who was in a zone when it comes to creativity, who’d hear nor find something new or missing and fill in that blank.

I don’t think it was intentional but it’s a happy accident! I got a new album, maybe a second. You got an amazing insight into someone you really like to learn more of. That’s a win/win/win.

And that’s a random fact I did know haha Duncan Jones is Zowie Bowie! He directed Moon - a favourite film of mine which I watched because Sam Rockwell was in it and that’s a reason to watch any film in my book. But my love of his career is for another thread =)

are there any other notable david bowie interviews?

I haven’t seen this one but Michael Parkinson, the interviewer was very popular in the UK for being a very good interviewer. I’m taking a guess but I’d say it’s going to be worth a watch.

first encounter with Any Other City is not unlike what I imagine the singularity feels like

would also like to throw my hat in the ring regarding best 21st century UK albums and raise the venerable @MoH Schlagenheim to their Hellfire

Sometimes youtube throws me something cool. For you all, but especially @MoH

No one else could wear that outfit and look so stylish.

And after the video

What a cameo too - but didn’t want to spoil it!!!

wow, not much of a tech guy but that 4k upgrade is really something. you could have told me it was filmed yesterday.

that was the first time i’d seen that video in total. what an ending.

“paranoid guy running through the street” is great fodder for music videos, it seems. reminds me of this all-timer:

loved this piece on funeral, really clear eyed on when the wheels fell off on the arcade fire, at least for me personally.

They’re coming to Boston on the 24th and I’m really wringing my hands about going. It’s not very practical for me, but… but…!!!

You should go. I mean it.

My relationship to music has changed so much though out my life. I “got into” music at a late age relative to my peers. I remember a classmate asking me who my favorite band was when I was in middle school and I just didn’t have an answer. That incident signaled to me that music wasn’t just something my parents reminisced about on road trips, it was something people actively sought out and developed preferences for.

Seeking out new music and curating my taste isn’t as much of a hobby as it used to be for me. I miss the P2P days and CD buying days, the streaming apps I find grating and difficult to use. I’ve also changed, my life is so much busier and taking the time to listen to, research, and soak in a new (to me) album is harder.

The music threads on this very forum have helped encourage me to continue to broaden my horizons. I already appreciate that, and this thread for an opportunity to write through these thoughts.
