Hi everyone, my original plan was to stop using twitter and stop engaging with social media altogether. This is still largely the plan, but it turns out I am human after all and wound up wanting to make sure I’m not forgotten forever, lol. I’ve logged back into my Bluesky account after leaving it dormant for a year. Slowly building the habit of hitting “bsk” instead of “twi” in my address bar now that a lot of games folks I follow have made the move. Hope to see you over there!

I was at least a little bit hopeful about bluesky compared to other socials but then I spent a bit on it this past weekend and encountered a bunch of heated US politics talk from accounts I don’t follow and that don’t seem to be shared by people I follow, so I guess at the very least I just need to set up some filters if I’m ever going to use it.
Yeah, still not sure actual social media is ‘for’ me in any particular way in 2024.

You should try using block lists. They filter most of those accounts.

really struggling to see the appeal of bluesky. maybe because i stopped being an active twitter user years ago. recently started being active on mastodon having not used much social media in the meantime and i like being part of the smaller, focused communities on there.
not here to yuck other people’s yums but folks seem to be joining it because it’s the new twitter (in a good way) but all i see is how it’s the new twitter (in a bad way) - hard not to see the inevitability of needing to hit profitability targets resulting in the usual ads, premium memberships, etc (cory doctorow - do i need to add a disclaimer to dropping that name? - put it quite well here)

the co-host manifesto mentioned something like ‘we believe there is value in being in the same place as everyone else’ and while I respect what those folks tried to do I think they were wrong and bluesky’s trajectory is making it really obvious how fundamentally overwhelming and unhealthy the universal content feed really is. that their most attractive features are increasingly clever ways to block people is really telling.
I think it’s possible to have a decent relationship with socmed but frankly I think you have to be really privileged in order to manage that

I’m always torn, because Social Media (as opposed to social media) always feels like a bad fit for me, a small quiet queer cryptid who doesn’t like arguing, and yet I participate on Insert Credit, which is still social media. I think it’s my knowledge that this is a curated community, with actual human mods who do the work of clearing out the shitheels, that keeps me coming here. But at the same time, Bluesky plays at being twitter before it got shitty, when for me twitter was kinda always shitty? I think I got fooled into thinking it wasn’t shitty for a while because it let me have a brief conversation with a famous person that one time, but that ended up being a wash because it also got me attention from the people who follow that famous person, some of whom seemed to only follow them to be angry at things they did and said?
Yeah, and thanks to @gvfo for the blocklists, but I also have to confess that back in my twitter days I ended up on a few block lists because I followed a sci-fi author who another sci-fi author got angry with one time for reasons that their fans got Big Mad about, which is yet another unflattering aspect of social media that I don’t enjoy.
Anyway, yeah: I’ll be social here, and I won’t delete my Bluesky account or anything, but I doubt it will ever be a place I visit regularly, unless it becomes the place that all the tattoo artists I follow go to when they flee Instagram.
