There's a geological [shield](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Shield) that that island sits on and the shield dips a tiny bit into the states, but I think of it as one of the regions here because it fits roughly between the prairies and the maritimes. I don't know how helpful it is as a term though because, sure all that ancient rock has an impact on the culture of people living on it but it's also enormous and there are other factors that influence culture, but I guess all these terms are imperfect.

And related to Pie Island don't know what the outdoors experience there is per se, but hiking Isle Royale from Windigo to Rock Harbor (or vice versa) is a heck of a nice time.
Would recommend the North Country and the Canadian Shield in general. Just a class act as far as biomes go
