Shittiest North American box art of Japanese games

Japanese box art is literally some of the coolest box art I’ve ever seen:

North American box art is three in game models standing with some weird light rings around them:

I kinda vibe with the american dragon quarter box art

Dragon Quarter’s cover is synonymous with Radiata Stories for me. Just a surprisingly honest depiction of what the characters are going to look like in game.

Yeah, I think the Dragon Quarter NA art is what PS2 box art should look like. I remember a big part of what sold me on .Hack was a blown-up close-up of the protagonist’s 3D model on the back of the box for volume one. It tells you “here are the characters you are going to be spending time with in the game” and trusts you to decide whether or not you like them.

(Also I’m pretty sure it’s not rings – it’s a single spiral of light winding around them, like they’re being tied up by some magical rope. I’ve never played it so I have no idea if that’s some in-game spell or something.)

I notice no one is saying it’s better than the Japanese box art

It’s not better, but it probably wouldn’t be in my top 1000 worst downgrades, either.

US version, gross :face_vomiting:

JP version, classy🍷

Capcom was really bad at this. Of course the NES/GB Mega Man games are legendary and I won’t be the one to post them.

LOL I think Gargoyles Quest II US cover is better.

Here are some real Capcom cover enshittifications:

There is already a box art comparison topic here: Wildly Different Box Art

Granted with a slightly different name. Want me to merge the two into one amazing comparison of artwork?

Dunno how everyone else is feeling, but over there I’d post things where I think both covers have merit, here when I consider the NA cover as garbage.

Capcom has really employed some of the best artists in the business.

Then I’ll do it for the sake of contrarianism.

Was cackling when La-Mulana 2 made a shopkeeper named “Megarock” based on the NA Mega Man art

I like this suikoden cover but its not particularly representative of the game

The Japanese one doesnt tell you anything either

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make a D&D party based off of the five characters in the NA Suikoden cover. I see wizard, fighter, sorcerer, cleric, and a noble-background character who could be a few classes (maybe fighter, maybe bard, maybe even barbarian).
