Sonic The Threadhog

@tapevulture

Have you not played it? It gets a lot of hate because of how unconventional it is compared to other Sonic games, but it‘s the one I always go back to when I’m in the mood to just play some Sonic. The way the levels are built leaves a lot of room for improvisation and changing up your play style. And people like to bash on the time-travel aspect as not being fully fleshed out or poorly implemented… but Sonic CD is my favorite one to attempt a perfect run because finding a Past post, keeping it, then finding a spot to time travel takes a fair bit of skill and is exhilarating when you pull it off.

I also have a thing for first “iterations” of games in a series (which is why Sonic 1 is so high up on my list). The ideas for the series and what it‘s supposed to be aren’t exactly fleshed out and the developers are trying some unique ideas to see what sticks and I think Sonic CD is a great example of that. Sonic 2 and CD were developed at the same time, and the Sonic 2 team went for the streamlined, speed based design whereas the Sonic CD team went for a more open-ended, giant pinball board approach, which really gets me going.

Unordered list

Sonic Mania
Sonic Generations
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 1 GG
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Rush
... Sonic Forces

@milo have never played it but it sounds nice since I like the playground-style levels of Sonic Mania a lot. Sonic 2 is too exacting for me.

???

@tapevulture this is actually a thing. Play for yourself to find out!

@tapevulture

Aaaahahaha out of context that's uhhh… A bit jarring. But like @billy mentioned, there is context!!

Even with all my frustrations with a lot of the games post Dreamcast era, I still love this guy.

BUT

I didn't like Sonic at first as a kid. The marketing behind him made him seem very try-hard cool. "This person is too much of a jerk." I would often think. At some point my cousin was heading out to sea, and my aunt asked my mother if I'd be interested in borrowing my cousin's Sega Genesis and game collection while he's away. She knew I loved playing on the NES, so figured I might enjoy this too.

I think the first few things I played on it were Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, and lots of Golden Axe with a friend. Eventually it came down to Sonic. Right from the start I was immediately sucked in. Vibrant colors, super catchy music, robots-- very cute bug robots. A combo of two things I was really into then. This wasn't try-hard cool, Sonic wasn't some jerk. This was cute and cool in a different way than advertised. I was hooked and suddenly a Sega kid.

I was all about Sonic. Was thrilled about SatAM and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, lost my mind when I saw issue #0 of Archie Sonic sitting on the comic rack at Walden's Books on a mall trip. I'd pick up a comic every time I'd go to Walden's or the grocery store. Got the McDonald's meals, eventually got my own Genesis. Never owned a SegaCD or 32X, but did borrow a friend's copy of Sonic CD to just listen to the red book audio and flip through the manual, surprised to read that Sally from the cartoon might be in it. Reading through a game magazine at the store, I saw screenshots of Knuckles Chaotix and my imagination went into overdrive. That robot Sonic is in this, it's so colorful. That robot Sonic looks so cool!! All of these new characters look so cool, who are they?? I'd never play that game until 32X emulation got better, but learned about the characters and Metal Sonic through the Archie comic adaptations.

Sonic Jam opened my eyes to the OVA, and the Japan-side of Sonic. He was suddenly even cooler. Who's Sarah? I love Eggman. Knuckles has a cool hat now! This music rocks! Why don't we have this here? It would pop up as a movie 1-2 years later, and ever since I would be searching for the soundtrack. I'd wish to see this version of Sonic again eventually.

Played an import version of Adventure at an Electronics Boutique and was bouncing off the walls at the potential of the rest of the game. I think after Adventure 2 I was kind of losing my enthusiasm for the series. The Archie comics got messier attempting to cram an Adventure adaptation into their already overly convoluted story. Sonic Heroes was a frustrating experience. I'd eventually approach any new game with caution instead of getting it immediately, mostly opting to rent instead of buying first.

Sonic Colors wowed me though, seeing Planet Wisp for the first time was amazing, and when I got my hands on it, it felt amazing. Unleashed was fine, so was Lost World. Music always stayed consistently good, though. I feel like I'm back on board. The Jakks Pacific figures of classic Sonic characters and badniks have been pretty great, I still frequently go back to play Mania and Generations. Happy to see Colors getting an updated release, interested in the new game despite Forces being a thing, and one of two movies I saw before the Pandemic hit was Sonic, which was fine. Sonic looked cute. Kids were going bonkers over it. ||They especially went feral with the Tails reveal. Of course he'd pop up, but I was still happy to see him too.|| Funny enough, they didn't react to the scenes of him flossing. I still find it funny they changed that dancing animation from the early trailer to a very stiff flossing one.

Anyway, still a bumpy ride following a series that had and continues to have a massive identity crisis, but there's signs of improvement finally. IDW's fresh start has been pleasant, Mania was great, Sonic in Monkey Ball is fun. Interested in this Prime series. Despite its many flaws, I still enjoy seeing further developments in Sonic Land.

Thank you for sharing this! Crush 40 backed by an orchestra is giving me life. That's one band whose crowd always, always sings along!

Sonic Adventure has a very special place in my heart. It was the first ever console game I played. My father sat me in his lap placed his hands over mine to teach me to use the controller. It still took us several tries to beat Chaos 0 since he had never played before either! Probably one of my favorite childhood memories.

Sonic adventure 2 was at the time the most mature game allowed in the house, my little brother and I both thought Shadow was just so cool. Once we beat the story, I spent hundreds of hours replaying city escape to earn rings and raise Chao. Nothing has come close to that simple loop of sloppy 3D platforming and low-stakes pet sim for me since. I'd imagine if animal crossing had a snowboarding mini-game it would come pretty close though!

@“Sailor_Silica”#p39792 for some reason you‘ve reminded me of the time i rented a dreamcast and sonic adventure and played through the whole game over the course of a long weekend without powering off the system, because the rental didn’t include a memory card.

@“pasquinelli”#p39831

That‘s how I had to play the Spyro games on the playstation 2 as a kid, since I didn’t have a ps1 memory card  That poor thing was left running for days!

@“pasquinelli”#p39831 I used to do this all the time, my family didn‘t understand ’why' I needed a memory card. I played the opening of SA1, Shenmue disc 1 and many others till their wheels fell off…

Yesterday I picked up my brother from a cool zine festival thing that he participated in, and on the way back I came up with the best idea I‘ve ever had: I’m going to do a fanzine explaining and reviewing all of Shadow The Hedgehog's endings and no one is going to stop me

I haven’t played a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure so I grabbed Generations on Steam for $3 to try to get back into it and see what I’ve been missing.

There sure are a lot of these games…

Sorry, I'm back, sorry sorry sorry

this rocks dude

picked up sonic mania again on my new pc.

spent a long ass time on the first two acts, got like 10 extra guys, 2 emeralds, an extra continue.

felt primed to maybe finally finish this game, off to a good start.

then it crashed.

I guess it was epic games launcher‘s fault.

might need to reinstall cause this version seems unstable, it wasn’t running properly in offline mode earlier.

electric shield is the best in the whole series man double jump makes Sonic overpowered.

I discovered a cool exploit to get lots of extra mans:
get 200 rings or more, then get the power up that makes your rings way too big when you drop them. easily pick up another 100 rings by just picking up like 4 of them.

It looks like Sonic Frontiers will finally give Sonic his “Breath of the Wild” moment.

This trailer is so fascinating to me, the environments look like it's from an entirely different game than the character model. Also, how is Sonic supposed to interact with open fields? Isn't the whole point of Sonic that there are a ton of obstacles around for him to platform off of? Unless this is a fake-out or they add in loops and spikes and rings all over the place, this is a very strange way of introducing the setting.

Though, I wouldn't mind if this game played more like Sonic 3D Blast or a collectathon rather than follow the 3D Sonic formula. I just can't really get my head around what it is supposed to be yet.
