heads up with an apology for huge bummer reasons: i will not be able to make it to a group viewing today. today is my last day with my cat, after a few tough years for him healthwise. he‘s over seventeen years old, lived in a shelter’s basement bravely donating blood for almost a decade of that. i met him six years and a day ago, and he traveled with me across America three separate times, one of which was just me and him. he got to spend the last few years of his long life with my mother, who spoiled him rotten. i love this little old wizard. much as I wish I was, i don‘t think i’m in a good headspace to watch a fun movie with friends.
hug your pets extra tonight, and have a good time!!
I went ahead and made a Discord server we can use just for live-chatting about the movie, either today at 9:30PM EST (20 minutes from now) or if interest has waned whenever we‘re able to do it. The idea would be to delete it afterward unless there’s some reason to keep it around. Change your server nickname to whatever your name is here.
If this is jumping the gun I can delete the link, but there it is for now.
If this needs to be postponed, that would be fine.
If someone can get me the file that was taken down from IA, I can either host it directly or set up a tracker and seed it for a few weeks if the idea is a simultwatch individually.
Otherwise, I know of two OTS solutions that could work for this:
Someone with Discord Turbo does a screenshare (turbo gives you 1080p I think?); I've seen this work quite well with a few dozen people watching
Use a service such as psp-tv and host the file on Google Drive; this might need a Greasemonkey script to work, but I know that it works
I think let's postpone it and figure out a good streaming/discussion solution, but I think somebody else should maybe take charge of the initiative! Maybe @captain and @phone who seem to be proactive on this front!
Does anyone here have Discord Turbo Nitro? That sounds like the simplest of the currently proposed plans of action, but if no one's got it then getting @phone the file sounds like the next best bet.
Did some research and futzing around tonight and I feel pretty confident that as long as someone has the file, we can do this with minimal* fussing and futzing.
**THE CAVEAT** (singular)
People are going to have to install the Tampermonkey browser extension for their favorite browser and let a benign Javascript script run.
This isn't super ideal; however, it's a straightforward way to have everyone watching the same video at the same time. Details can be seen here: https://cytu.be/google_drive_userscript
The first item (and currently playing) is on my Google Drive, and the second is a Youtube video:
right-click, open image in new tab if the text is too squishy
Let me know what you think and we'll take it from there.
I used Cytube to watch E3 with friends this past week and I can confirm it‘s a good solution. Didn’t know Tampermonkey was required, but I already had that for other stuff.
@JoJoestar Tampermonkey is only needed if you're trying to trying to use Google Drive as the stream source. Cytube works out of the box for stuff like Youtube, etc.
If everyone thinks that the Cytube + Google Drive route is least worst option, following the instructions on this page will do the trick: CyTube .
I‘ll setup a test channel later today where you’ll be able to check out if it‘ll work. You don’t need to register an account or anything, it should be pretty breezy. Watch this space!
