Holy crap thank you @connrrr for this protip-- it’s made my otherwise nightmarish journey through updating the STG thread a walk in the park, comparatively! I imagine it won’t work with things like imgur images, but so many of the youtube and other links are treated really nicely by this method!

It’s tough as the HTML code has a lot of effects on posts - such as the older ones have a link break at the start of the code, changes in formating and also making sure it’s fully updated to align with the way Discourse manages text.
That’s a great idea and when I start doing some more, I will do it your way. Full disclosure, it was me that edited that one and I’ve done too many to go through all the YouTube links too. However once we get mentions done, images and videos are next on the list!

Yeah when you get one you’ll need to click through the weird i.imgur.com/bullshit.png link to the image and grab it from there to upload any to the forum’s server. I’ve found that copying and pasting gifs does not work though, and you’ll need to save those to your computer if you want to upload them.
Hopefully this tip helps us accomplish as much of both at the same time as possible!!

Operation Broomstick is in full effect.
In one week we’ve cleaned the mentions up in over 2,300 posts!!! That’s almost 5% of the mentions directly aimed at the user they were originally for in Flarum sorted. On top of that, images, video links and quotes have been cleaned too and as that was part of the next step, doing it early never hurts.
A huge thank you to everyone who’s helping and of course if anyone wants to join in the fun, please let me know.

I’m still having trouble with cleaning up images/gifs . So for now I’m leaving them as is, and will just get back to them when we go back around and focus on those.
I’ve tried all sorts of copy/pasting/editing with them, but just can’t seem to figure it out in an efficient way.

What I am doing is:
copy the link from the image and pasting it in my browser
copy that image and paste it back into the post (making sure to see the upload confirms)
delete the text that directs to imgur
For gifs the only option I have is to go to the url and save the gif locally, then upload it manually.
It’s not fun or not fast, but it does work. If you want to leave them that’s totally cool and we’ll work on that next time.

I’m finding myself despising the Karasu of the past for their proclivity to post like half a dozen images in the STG/Shmup thread circa 2022 in ways that don’t in any way enrich their posted content! Ah well, hindsight, right? Sorry to have stalled so much but having to repair that kind of stuff (and work of course) has really slowed it down for me!

No need to apologise, every post done means one less to clean up! This isn’t a race and it’ll be done when it’s done. If it takes a bit longer then it does.

I have a pet theory about how to automate images with the script but I haven’t had time to try it out.
Interestingly I have no problem copy/pasting gifs - I wonder what browser you all are using? I’m using Firefox on Windows and it seems to work fine.
Safari. I’ve tried various copy-pasting tricks, and followed everyone’s suggestions, and feel pretty dumb because I still can’t figure it out. But for now, focusing on the usernames anyway and will just go back to images later when we have a more smoothed out system for them or focus on them solely.

It might have something to do with some gifs being embedded as videos due to the way that imgur processed them. Maybe that is the problem?
For example, I was able to do most gifs in this thread without issue, but this post had a gif embedded like this
[upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/XTWJHCe.gif]</UPL-IMAGE-PREVIEW></p>
I had to download the image to my hard drive and reupload it as a video (?) file

Operation Broomstick update:
It’s been two weeks since we started and I’m very happy to say that over 4,000 posts have been edited!!! That’s just under 10% of the entire targetted posts with mentions in them and doesn’t include the changes to images, videos and other formatting fun that have been done in the process.
Thank you to everyone helping out with this, and of course more help is always welcome.
Fun fact - four topics are taking up 10% of the entire updates needed! They are:
- (Archived 2022) The thread in which we talk about games we are currently playing
- (Archived) The thread in which we discuss the videogames we are playing in the year 2023
- Show me anything
- What’s that game (Easy mode).
So you know, if you wonder “Oh, Show Me anything still needs work”, it will be done. But it also has over 1,000 posts in it to edit so it will be shown at some point!
